No longer the place to go

I had frequented Rex many times over the years with the office crowd. The food was generally very good at the higher end of the quality scale.

I can even say that earlier this year I had the best Wild Salmon burger I have ever had in my life there. But unfortunately, service was so poor when I went in August for a BD party with a group of about 8 women that many if not all of us will never return. The female server had real attitude and didn't seem to care about service at all. Three of the ladies ordered the same dish and none of them were the same. The portions and contents didn't match.

Disappointing and if they want to survive in the DT core, they will have to pull up their socks.

Incredible table d'hote value

The $25 three course dinner at Rex is one of the best deals in Vancouver right now in my opinion. Was there in late August and then again this past Friday night. Fairly quiet in the evening as it's a little off the beaten path once the offices close.

On our most recent visit my partner had the chile prawns with Asian greens to start - a generous portion with a spicy sweet/sour sauce over gai lan. The beef carpaccio with asiago cheese and fried capers I had left me wanting about three plates more. For mains we had coho salmon and chicken saltimbocca. Both were very good, but the vegetables and roast potatoes stole the show. The bread accompanying dinner is simple but quite unique (to me anyway) and very tasty French bread with black peppercorns. Dessert was an apple tart with cinnamon gelato for me and lemon cheesecake for the SO. Both were wonderful.

Service is very gracious. The room has an understated elegance about it.

Arrived at the restaurant 40 minutes before closing on a weeknight. Excellent food, excellent service from the waitress-they did not rush us to leave before closing. Portion sizes were also large. I would definitely go back to dine here again.

Bad prime rib

Went there based on the reviews here

Service was awesome, waiter was helpful and very eager to help,

There was two of us at 5pm on a weeknight. Only 1 other table for dinner. Lounge was full of after-work drinkers.

We both ordered the prime rib. It was served luke warm borderline cold, and frankly wasn't very good. Won't be back, even though it was probably an off-night.

I went again, but this time for the $25 three course Table d’Hote menu choosing the beef carpaccio, prime rib, and chocolate pie. Beef carpaccio was a generous amount and very tasty. Prime rib - this was where I had a slightly puzzled look on my face. My plate contained a lot of water..."gravy". I soaked it up with the bread (which was hot and soft by the way) but I still would have preferred my plate watery-gravy-less. Anyway, the prime rib was good and the horseraddish was awesome (again). The chocolate pie was also a generous amount and also very good.

I was there on a Thursday night and there weren't too many people. The server was very attentive and polite.

So even though my prime rib plate had a bit too much water, I'd still go back and this time, tear myself away from the $25 three course meal (what a steal!) and actually order from the regular menu.

It's been awhile since I've encountered a restaurant with great service, great food, and great value all in one. Rex takes the cake! With their $25 3-course menu, you can't go wrong. The prime rib is fabulous (I never even liked prime rib before having it at Rex), as is the beef carpaccio. I absolutely have to commend them on their high calibre service - every single one of their employees who came to our table (three) were extremely pleasant, warm, and polite. They did all they could to accommodate our needs. Two thumbs up from me.

Surprisingly pleasant experience

I had always walked by the restaurant on my way to work and home from work. I never gave it much thought until Dine Out Vancouver had them on the list. My boyfriend and I decided to try it out.

The service was impressive. Our server was quite attentive, but he pushed the alcoholic drinks a little too much, it made us a little uncomfortable. I don't usually drink (allergies), but I ordered a cassis & o.j. just to get him to ease up on the "would you like something to drink?".

The food was quite nice. The frisee salad with roast pears and tomato was very well balanced. The mushroom tart was hearty and earthy. The prime rib was AMAZING. I couldn't stop eating it off of my bf's plate. My salmon was a little dry, but the risotto cake was quite nice. The desserts were refreshing. A little on the sweet side though. All in all, a solid restaurant and I won't mind going back for lunch.

Not Bad.

Came here because I was sampling food for an upcoming event. When I came in, I felt a little out of place because it is a VERY upscale place. (I'd never been here before; it was a suggestion of my boyfriend to come here.) Nonetheless, the manager was still very polite and friendly, and a server was summoned immediately to take us to our table.

Alcoholic beverages were pushed, but my friend and I wanted to pass on the alcohol so we ordered virgin drinks. The server we had definitely knew his stuff and explained to us what the soup of the day and the lunch specials were. In the end, I went with the farfalle pasta and my friend went with the prime rib. We also ordered the spicy calamari as an appetizer. Delicious! There was also some bread, and that bread is by far the best bread I've ever had. It's the right texture before a somewhat heavy lunch.

My pasta was delicious, but I wasn't happy to find tails still attached to my shrimp. Scallops were cooked and still juicy and tender, not dry. I had some of my friend's meat, and it was cooked just right - not burned and with much flavour. Their fries are also delicious.

Only thing I was not happy with....was the fact that there was no debit machine! I had to run to the bank to grab cash, and I was so upset because I had to leave my friend behind....but I got the money, thank god, but shaved off a bit of the tip for making me have to do that. Nonetheless, I will be booking my event there, and here's to hoping that the experience is as good as today's.

It's situated in a beautiful spot, lovely on a sunny day. Just be sure to BRING CASH!!! Or it might ruin your dining experience...

I went to this place about four times now since my experience when I had with the Vancouver Dineout 2006 and must say the service and food was great! I tried both lunch and dinner there and had good experiences with both. For the month of August, it is one of the few restaurants that still have a three course meal for $25.00 similar to when the Vancouver Dineout 2006 menu took place in the month of January. I must recommend their Prime Rib dinner and can pretty much say it beats The Keg any day!!! I'm already drooling thinking about it...Service is awesome, more so during dinner than lunch as lunch tends to be busier somewhat but it's still acceptable.
