I am surprised I haven't reviewed this place yet. We come here often, and the food is usually excellent. I love the fried chicken and the risotto, among other things. I like that this place has a different kind of menu than your typical Vancouver restaurant in this category. The food here is down-to-earth dishes that feature delicious ingredients, done right. The staff is excellent and they have always exceeded our expectations. My veggie husband finds things he loves on the menu too, and he loves the drink menu!

The only weird part is about 10% of the time I get something that tastes "off" - and it is usually really off. Like today one of my chicken pieces tasted bad. Why? I don't know. The other two were great. And one other time I had a steak that just tasted wrong. Anyway we get truly excellent food most of the time, the service is phenominal, and we will keep coming back regardless.

Lives up to the reputation

There should be no surprise about what to expect from this place by now. When you walk in, everything is as it should be. Very "modern" clean decor, the staff are all very efficient and friendly (though I would say perhaps slightly coldly professional). No need to say more, so let's move on to the food.

We had the 4-course chef's menu. $64 this one. We let them know any preferences of course and off they went. There were no repeats or duplicates, each person had a different dishes (even the amuse bouche) so there was plenty to sample and talk about. The dish sizes ... well, to be expected, we thought we'd easily stuff it down and walk out of there. Oh so wrong, by the time dinner was over, we were rolling out of there. I don't know how we could've gone for the larger menus without fasting first.

Each course was definitely creative. Not something that you'd remember eating elsewhere. Of course, that is not without risks. My particular soup was just okay. There were one or 2 other "okay's", but no misses. One highlight for me was the pork. My gosh, yes, it was tasty pork for sure, but at the same time, also reminded me of munching down on a nice medium-rare steak for some reason. One of the most innovative and best pork dishes I've ever had.
Each dish came perfectly paced for a good dinner that involves a lot of eating and conversation.

Unlike some lucky souls, it'd be impossible for us to come here on any frequent basis. However, I would qualify this as a "must-visit" place to open your eyes once in a while to see what could be done. There are no "usuals" here. Highly recommended.

Love Refuel -

I love Refuel. I have reviewed Fuel in the past and am just as excited about its reincarnation, Refuel.
The service staff is so knowledgeable about wine, beer, ingredients and cooking techniques. They are just as excited about the burger as they are about the confit duck. This is a restaurant that has a little something for everyone; beautiful albacore tuna salad, incredible wild salmon, whole confit duck for two, dry aged rib-eye steaks and burgers. I have tried it all and love it! The value is in the ingredients. You won't find better if you shopped at the farmers market and prepared it yourself.

Olympic visit

Came here during the Olympics and it was not as busy as I expected, guess W4th didn't get the overflow crowd from downtown. Tried a few appies, lemon rissotto - good but tasted a bit like chinese congee, roasted bone marrow - never tried it before and it was good, gnochii - just OK, had better but the mushrooms were really good, hangar steak salad - below average based on the size and the quality of the steak, raw oyster - average, baked oysters - aveage. Service was really good and they replaced cutlery and wine glasses quickly. Ambiance is solid, new moderne feel. Value is just ok, the portions were a bit small for the price. Overall would come back and try again. No mention of any daily specials but would be interesting if they had some.

Tasty Eats, Pricey Menu... and Questionable Service
By jpcostales of Metrotown, Burnaby (70 Reviews)

Not overly impressed with my first venture, but its worth another try. Checked out Refuel with my girlfriend and another couple a few months back. Trendy place on 4th Ave in Kits.

Food - Pretty good. Tried out the piggy puffs w/ BBQ spice to start. A tasty treat I used to have as a kid. Had the sloping hill pork for the main, which was excellent, but a fairly small portion. My girlfriend and our other dining partners had the buttermilk chicken, which was absolutely enormous and incredibly tasty. According to my gf, the accompanying jalapeno biscuit was also excellent.

Service - Our server was friendly and prompt - no complaints. What was questionable came after dinner. I left a tip on my visa bill and then signed and left - I left both copies as I never take restaurant receipts. I got a call 30 minutes later from our dining partners, who were just contacted by the restaurant. Apparently they lost the bill and accused me of taking the wrong copy and not leaving a tip. Very poor customer service in my book.

Value & Ambiance - Value is okay. Pretty normal for the Kits area, but pricey none-the-less. The best thing about the restaurant is the ambiance. Very intimate room, with a nice bar at the entrance.

A Memorable Experience
By Feed me a kitty cat of Vancouver (3 Reviews)

A few friends and I ordered from the DineOut menu at Refuel and it proved to be quite a memorable experience altogether. Our night started with a few Mocktails which were absolutely delicious. Then came the food...

Our appetizer was the Pork Rillette, which can be likened to an organic locally grown SPAM. There really was no difference in look or taste. The rye crackers that come with the Rillette were extremely crunchy and we are lucky no teeth were chipped.

For the main course I ordered the Heritage Pork with caramelized brussel sprouts and potato puree. The highlight was definitely the brussel sprouts.

For dessert, we all ordered the chocolate pot de crème, which tastes extremely similar to Jell-O Pudding.

With such a scrumptious sounding menu enough to make one salivate, we were disappointed that the words did not fit the plate.

Just my opinion .....
By muggy of Vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, November 21, 2010 - 8:30am [Dine in]

I was sitting at the bar in the open kitchen at Refuel when I had a revelation about food, so I suppose that's why I not only enjoy dining there but it's why I have this sentimental attachment to the place. Fuel was the first time I ever tried Foie Gras. It was where I was educated about how foie gras was made by the animal rights activists protesting in front of their doors. Was I bothered you ask? Not Really ...... I guess it's because I believe in human rights first and foremost and if we can't get that right in this world then we have no chance with animals....... hmmmm.... Just my opinion though.
Dining at Refuel was the first time I ever saw a patron order a double patty burger (patties are thick in case you've never had their burger) with fried egg and extra bun in the middle ( yes...like a Big Mac), added with a patty of seared foie gras (it may have had pancetta in it as well).
It's where I learned about amuse bouche, and really it's where I learned a lot about food in general. So sentimental to say the least, it brings me to my revelation. Good food...... and I mean truly great tasting food, 9 times out of 10 is not the healthiest. The revelation happened when I stuck a deep fried croquette stuffed with foie gras in my mouth. Things just don't taste the same without rich oils, sugars, salts, and whatever kind of animal lards melted in the deep fryer. My experiences at Fuel and Refuel have been nothing but amazing for me, it's not always perfect but then again we don't live in a perfect world. It's funny how a restaurant and food can make you do all this thinking and open doors to profound conversations of politics and personal feelings.
I enjoy sitting at the open kitchen bar and seeing the wonderful chefs make my food.
Chef Ted is always great to talk to. I have to say any executive chef that can make a hog head confit sound good has to be a place you need to visit. Hats off to chef Belcham.

Again this is all just my opinion .......

Food is OUTSTANDING, unless you are a rookie

Refuel is outstanding. The ribeye IS heavily marbled, to perfection. They do use salt when they cook, in a masterful way. If you actually like good food and appreciate simple, delicious dishes prepared by an expert kitchen then Refuel is for you. If your favorite restaurant is the Naam and you think fat is bad for you you may not enjoy everything they serve at Refuel.

Now that I am done my rant...

Refuel is worth checking out, if you are a foodie, or if you just want THE BEST BURGER in the city. Again, this is not for the light hearted. They serve it medium rare, almost like warm steak tartar, and it blows my mind. If you can handle meat that is rare or medium rare, then give this burger a shot. The menu is constantly changing and evolving. If you have a chance go to one of their special events like the whole pig dinner, amazing

I had the lamb sandwich and dining pal had the chicken confit sandwich. It came with a salad and did not care for the dressing. The dessert was good though, can't remember the name but it had apple flavour and it was excellent. However, the prices were overpriced for what you get. It wasn't the same level as Gastropod nor some of the others in Yaletown so the prices did not fit the quality of the food. I would return to Gastropod in a heartbeat but not Fuel.

The food here is definitely a fine dinning experience. The waitress was consciences on topping our Antipodes Sparking water and the service was prompt and courteous.

We started with celeriac soup served with warm bread, unsalted butter and sea salt on the side. The soup was poured at tableside over the nicely turned vegetables. More seasoning would be my preference.

My first glass of Pinot Gris was short poured. I noted this to the server and silence was the answer. My second glass of Riesling was better. Not the wine but the actual ounces. Their wine list is weak on product for this pretender type of Bistro Restaurant and they could be a bit fairer prices on their wines by the glass.

Our main courses of sable fish and trout arrived at our table first as a feast for our eyes and then for our senses. All the above complaints melted away to the background and we thoroughly enjoyed the Chef’s creations.

Finished the dinner with decaf cappuccinos and cheese choices of Camembert and Cashel Blue. The touch of raisin crustiness on the side was excellent and seconds appeared on request.

And my final irritant could be a big one: We only had the table for two hours (18:30hrs – 20:30hrs on a Friday night). At these prices, should there be a time limit? And when the “addition” arrives, close your eyes, open your wallet and say ‘ah’. Try not to feel the pain when the kitchen “Tongs” swipe your credit card.

Went there with 3 other dining companions and we were not impressed. tried the albacore tuna salad and the duck leg. also tried my friends dry aged burger. food just doesnt meld together very well with food over salted and certain ingredients dominating the other flavours. We all were disapointed. 2nd time- includ. when it was fuel. Won't ever go back.

If not insisted by my girlfriend's friend, I would not have suggested going there in the first place. I have been to Fuel, and was not impressed by the value for the quality.

I'd say the menu and the decor are more down to earth than before. Service was standard, as expected in any restaurant of similar size (the restaurant is not big at all). I'd still think the dishes do not present good value. The quality is standard, but I would have gotten it anywhere else I am expecting to pay similar price.

One thing they do well, I guess, it's their marketing. Oh well, like last time, I might not be back soon.

Nothing to write home about

My boyfriend and I have heard the hype of this restaurant and couldn't wait to try this place. I am sorry to say it did not meet our expectations. Maybe if we went in without any preconceived notions, we may have had a different experience.

We were disappointed with the menu choices. There was really nothing we wanted to order so we settled for the leek risotto to start, the fried chicken and the burger with poutine. Our server provided exceptional service and we loved the ambience. The risotto was a little salty for me but my boyfriend thought it was well seasoned. I love leeks but I couldn't taste any leeks in it. The burger was pretty tasty, a little grisley but filling nonetheless. The poutine tasted like how a poutine should taste. The portion of the chicken was pretty huge but like another review that I read there is just something missing from each course but I don't know what. Our bill came to about $54 including tax. We left this place feeling not satisfied with the food and felt it was way too pricy for what it is and wishing we went somewhere else.

Refuel Needs to Reconnoiter
By artfuldodger of False Creek, Vancouver (30 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, May 7, 2010 - 10:40am [Dine in]

I still regret that I did not dine at the original, unadulterated Fuel. The prices set by the cocky yet capable Alberta-bred ownership were too steep for Fourth Avenue, and definitely too steep for Fourth Avenue during a recession, so the restaurant was revamped in December, 2009. With a shift towards comfort food and charcuterie, ReFuel has a diverse and undeniably creative menu, but every dish that was ordered at our table was a bit "off".

First, the Aged Beef Burger was raw and cold in the middle, despite a request for a "medium" yet "cooked-through" patty. This was brought to our server's attention and she assured us that there were no health risks based on the way that the beef is ground and prepared in-house, but cold ground beef is *never* pleasant in texture or consistency.

Second, the ingredients in the Seared Albacore Salad (which I ordered) were unusual and complementary, but my fish-to-greens ratio was off by a few degrees. The chefs were generous with the tuna, which I definitely cannot complain about, but I did not have enough blood orange and crushed picholines to tame these ginormous slices of fresh fish. I actually left some of the tuna (gasp!) because I sensed a seafood overdose coming on and really felt that I needed more greens to resolve this "f-issue".

Third, the Hangar Steak Salad was elegantly presented (deep reds of rare beef juxtaposed against lush arugula like rugosas in a Tuscan garden) but contained an overpowering amount of blue cheese. A sprinkle would have tied the room together, but this downpour of Devon Blue left the room flooded and inhospitable. Lastly - and this only counts as a quasi-criticism - the Buttermilk Polderside Fried Chicken basically consisted of an entire (!) chicken, with a teeny dish of slaw and a tiny jalapeno biscuit. Again, appropriate ratios would have been appreciated, by our palates and arteries.

Yikes. I hope I haven't been too mean to ReFuel. Robert Belcham and company definitely have crazy skills...and the service was attentive...and the food was well prepared, but - like the mismatched and random decor - things didn't quite click. I don't think I will go out of my way to dine here again, but if I do end up at ReFuel in the future I will focus on the playful and rare starters, such as the Roasted Bone Marrow and the Foie Gras Croquettes (which I ordered as my appetizer and was highly amused by).

re-fueled... I don't think so!

I've had bad experiences at fuel, but decided to try again after the re-launch. The place still falls below par.
The service was awful. I think it may have been our waitress' first night EVER in a restaurant. Very insecure & didn't care about anything she was doing. We waited close to 10 minutes before even getting water, or having a drink order taken.
The restaurant was incredibly loud. We were shouting across the table and still couldn't hear each other.
The food wasn't that good. Calamari was actually very nicely done. Hazelnut pear salad, simple & bland. Lemon risotto- awful. Totally over cooked & had strange additive sauce, and WAY too much of it, making it totally soupy.
The waitress refused to take un-eaten plates off the table. Then brought us the bill while the plates were still on the table. I guess asking if everything was okay was a question she wanted to leave un-answered!
Will not return. Would not recommend. Luckily we bailed before ordering entrees and letting the lame experience carry on any longer!

Went on Fried Chicken Friday to try the fried chicken of course, but also tried one of the set lunch menu. The fried chicken was good, better than KFC, but I still prefer Church's (perhaps it's a childhood memory thing). Anyways, since the chicken special comes with a beer and the ambiance is very nice, the value is good. The set lunch was more memorable and more reasonably priced than at dinner time. If you do go for the chicken special, you should consider ordering in advance since there is a limited number of the chicken special and more than 75% of the people appeared to be having the special.

I saw all the hype reviews and decided to try this restaurant myself. 3 of us went for lunch, and we all ordered different dishes. Initially, the prices seemed very high for lunch, but then, when the food came, I saw that the portions were unusually large, so in terms of quantity, the value wasn't bad. The quality was another matter. The ingredients were fresh and the dishes well prepared for presentation, but the taste buds were not excited. The cuisine and cooking style are very similar to those at Chow Restaurant, but the food at Chow is far more delicious. Service was very good, and the decor was nice. Overall, not bad, but not particularly memorable.

Tried Fuel for the first time on Easter weekend. For an appetizer I had Cures Charcuterie, which is similar to anything you might find at Salt. If you enjoy this kind of thing you'll really enjoy it... I did. For the main I had venison shoulder. It was a prepared well and very flavorful. The presentation of each plate is as a high quality as you'd expect. The ambiance is pretty simple, nothing unique. This seems to be the trend for the last few years in a lot of places, but given the cost of design and materials, it is probably a more pragmatic decision than a stylistic one. The service was excellent. Our server was very friendly and helpful. He took time to explain to us the questions we had. He was very friendly and seemed to really enjoy is work. If there was a reason I would go back it would be b/c of the service we experienced, but there are other places which are doing the same thing as Fuel in terms of food. If you haven't been, it's worth checking it out.

Fine FINE Fine Dining
By sblessley of Vancouver West End (12 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, July 6, 2008 - 3:43pm [Dine in]

Had been looking over my other reviews, and realized I tend to pan the unpleasant experiences without giving out kudos where due. Here, they're due.

Despite having table reservations, we asked for seats at the bar (which is about 40cm from the Cooks' work areas, and at the right end, next to the "pass" where food gets its final touches before going out to the diners. What a treat -- I've always felt that fine dining should be a bit like theatre, appealing to multiple senses, having an air of sophistication and where appropriate, sense of involvement. Fuel offered all these and the food unfolded in front of our wide eyes.

The Lovely Missus had the "back bacon" or whatever they're calling it. Cooked sous vide, then fried, it was simply luscious pork goodness. The presentation and accompaniments were perfect. I had the other pork main, they didn't describe it this way, but I'd have called it a "degustacion of pork on a plate". Even if that's spelled wrong. Oh, we also had a plate of cold spot prawns -- fresh? Guess so: they were moving when they cut them before grilling. Sweet, lovely flesh. Those were served on a vinaigrette on arugula -- not that exciting but at least it didn't interfere with the prawn flavour.

The food is imaginative, creative, and has great flavour pairing with the veg/starch on the plate.

We had been recommended an outstanding "inexpensive" ($48) bottle of BC Merlot (Shiraz?) which was meted out by the server at a much more leisurely pace that normal (which is great, because we really don't need to quaff a bottle of wine then after dinner drinks then hope in our car and careening home in the Toyota...). Good wine, appreciated slowly. Yum. And while it was a hardy-red, it offered a fruitiness that complemented our Porkfest nicely.

The bill was about $200 for two with wine and tip. A splurge for us, but we'll be saving up for the next opportunity.

I'm not sure about the trends of the new concept for high end restaurants - excellent chef, serving often brilliant food, well done wine list in a cafeteria setting to offset the "irony" of $35 entrees. The food, as I mentioned, was artfully prepared, with the steak being a superb, flavourful and satisfying choice, which is odd in places like this. The drinks menu was very good, with the offering of a Sazerac from New Orleans because the sommelier had been to New Orleans and brought back some Peychaud bitters showing the commitment to the little things that get you noticed.

This is a noisy place, definitely not suited for a romantic dinner for two but nice for a noisy, if showy, evening out, although the place doesn't encourage you to linger too much. Staff are generally well trained, trying to offer Michelin 1 star lite service, often achieving it. Recommended but rather selectively depending on your age, and desire for a modern nouvelly irony experience.
