Cafe serving frozen yoghurt with choice of toppings, waffles, crepes, loose leaf teas, hot chocolate and coffees.
Seeing the oodles of customers flock in and around this new dig suggested this was the newest, hip and trendy frogurt establishment in town, and a new place to be seen, so an eventual visit was made the other night.
Honestly, I'm better off with fewer options to pick from, so when the window cases and menus displayed all the possible choices, I was floored. I eventually took the safe route and chose one of their specials, "The W", while a tag alone friend made his own. Our creation started with a base of green tea frogurt, topped with fresh blueberries, some sort of fruit snack-like, blandish chewy things and topped with a boysenberry sauce. The frogurt had a great, smooth texture with very mild undertones of the green tea, though not a particular fan, it could've been stronger still. It didn't hold it's body well even for a cool night - it was already turning into soup when we left to enjoy at English Bay - and there's nothing I hate more than melting ice cream/gelato/frogurt..whatever. The chewy things I did not care for and certainly did not go well at all with the other toppings. Our friend went a little daring with his incorporating cereal, chocolate and fruit together - well received, if not clashing. A note about the sizes, while my gf and I split a small, I couldn't see a discernable difference between ours and our friend's medium.
Service was friendly if not a little too perky but I suppose the sugary stuff brings out the smiles in everyone.
While the space is totally cool and today, it's starting to show it's age on the floor, scuffs and marring. They could've at least swept a little; bits and pieces of rubbish scattered.
While I agree the frogurt base product is excellent, you certainly pay for it, and with additional sizing and toppings, you can easily nail the $10 mark. While I like the idea of having a lot of toppings to choose from, some don't compliment at all. Keep it simple, stupid.
I wanted to finally try a frozen yogurt place in Vancouver that I thought had the same qualities of places I tried in New York. (Pinkberry & Red Mango) On a hot summer's day, we found Qoola on Denman. It was quite spacious but very empty on a Saturday afternoon. The places in NY were always packed and busy! I ordered an original frozen yogurt with 2 fruit toppings and to my surprise it wasn't a packaged price! Fruit toppings were 89 cents on top of the price of the yogurt $3.95 for small, $4.95 for a medium, etc. I recall in NY prices were always listed as yogurt plus 1 topping or plus 2 topping and it wasn't as much as I paid at Qoola. My hubby was more adventurous and tried their waffle plus fruit plus a dopple of yogurt option. Once again, all the add-on's made the total more than expected. Our total came to around $15! Crazy! But it was delicioius and refreshing. Now to try all the other ones in town like Froyo Swirl, Scoop and Blueberry World! Glad that I don't have to fly to NY to crave my frozen yogurt urges! =)
Food: I chose the chocolate frozen yogurt. It tasted EXACTLY the same as the chocolate ice cream you'd find at McDonald's. The mango topping (as the server suggested) matched poorly with the frozen yogurt, as it was extremely sour when eaten with the frozen yogurt.
Service: Friendly service. We were allowed samples.
Value: Definitely not worth it! It came to over $6 for a SMALL ice cream (they're the machine-made ones, NOT the kind where the server scoops it) and diced mango.
Ambiance: Very clean and nice, but really really small. There were only about 3 tables...
Unlike Yogen Fruz, this place offers frozen yogurt with toppings that are not blended together, similar to Froyo Swirl. However, unlike Froyo Swirl, the amount of toppings you can choose from is tremendous. They've got everything from fruit to sauces cereals (Captain Crunch, anyone?) and you can really mix it up if you wish. Everything looks fresh as well.
A "small" frozen yogurt will set you back $5 and you get to choose 2 toppings to put on it. Our choice was the Orange Creamsicle yogurt (their feature of the month) with mochi (rice cake) and granola and it was awesome. The flavours blended well and the granola added an interesting texture to the yogurt.
They're opening another one at Aberdeen Center in Richmond and I go there a lot more often than DT, so once that's open, I foresee a lot of frozen yogurt in my future....
Food: the yogurt was great (plain), I've had both the chocolate and green tea options for the yogurt and they weren't anything special. You pay a base fee for the yogurt and then it's 89 cents /topping. By topping, they really mean 6 raspberries, or 10 blueberries, or 4 strawberries so keep that in mind. They emphasize how organic and healthy these fruits are, but it still seems to me a little bit stingy on the toppings. The fruits are nicely cut and arranged on your yogurt, but I'm not sure that makes up for the steep price. Also, my friend's gummy bears and mochi were both hard, as if they had been left overnight.... I've never had mochi so tough, extremely disappointe,d especially since my friend paid almost a buck for 9 mini cubes (imagine pieces of gum)
Service: Great everytime I go. No complaints there. They also offer you compliementary samples of the different kinds of yogurt. The servers are cheerful and willing to answer questions.
Value: This is where this place rates low for me. Last time, I bought a small with three toppings - it came out to almost $8. It's just not feasible, especially considering it's still frozen yogurt - not even cake or tart. And it's not like they give you a fair sized portion, either. Way too pricy for what you get in return.
Ambiance: Clean and green, kind of like pinkberry in the states.
Overall, although I've been to this place a few times already, I don't think I will be going back because of the lack of value. I would much rather recommend Scoop on west 4th (near arbutus, I believe) for frozen yogurt - the interior is not as pretty but the yogurt tastes great and you get to top it yourself - at a much more affordable rate.
My biggest complain with Qoola is the big airhole in the middle of the cup. Its a rip off. We already paying for expensive frozen yogurt and yet the servings are coming up short.
It happened to me in their Denman location and it happened to me again in their Richmond location. I complained about it and the staff told me its normal to have a hole and it goes by weight. That is the biggest BS ive heard. Holes are not normal in a yogurt serving. It shows the server lacks training in dispensing the proper serving. As for it being the correct weight, the height of my serving is just normal. If the hole is not there then the top will be almost flat.
Anyway, the customers should watch for these holes and if u get them, return your yogurt. I dont buy the excuse that the staff is just new. If they are new then they should practice on buckets of their own yogurt not on the customers' expensive yogurt.
Food: Great frozen yogurt! Even if the yogurt was plain, I could eat that on its own. It's not sweet or over powering. It tastes very refreshing. The fresh fruit toppings are always a welcome addition.
Service: The staff are quite friendly and talkative. They take their time to explain how the Qoola experience goes. Questions and concerns are welcomed nicely.
Value: For a frozen yogurt place, yes it is a bit more than your average. Though if you compare it with other dessert places, really it's the same thing. Qoola offers that fresh and healthier alternative to some of the other local dessert places.
Ambiance: The deccor is very nice. It's well lit, always clean, modern styling, and cozy. I love how they use biodegradeable spoons and everything else is recyled materials. Some might find it annoying to sort your trash but I feel it's a nice change.
I was drawn into Qoola by their $5 special (one small yogurt + 2 toppings from 11-7pm). It was seven on the dot so I quickly ordered a small green tea yogurt. The server was friendly enough to offer me a sample of it first, and after one taste i knew that this would hit the spot. The green tea was not too overpowering and it packed just the right amount of tangy punch i was looking for in the yogurt. The two toppings I chose were mango and chocolate flakes. I was pleasantly surprised to find the mangoes tasting ripe. Overall the interior is really cool but it was a bit of a mess, probably from the crowd of beach people wandering in from a long day of tanning. I definitely recommend trying this place out, but be wary of overindulging in this "healthy" treat... too much of anything is a bad thing =)
I have been to this place twice and have been very impressed with the product both times. The frozen yogurt is great and I love how the plain is not as sweet as other types.
We also had their waffle which was HUGE with a swirl of yogurt on it.The waffle was great full of really tasty whole grains and the yogurt accompanied it perfectly. This was easily enough for two people and came to just seven dollars.
I think based on the quality of the products, the service and the ambiance this is one frozen yogurt place that won't disappear.
Went to try this latest addition to the frozen yoghurt scene in Downtown last weekend. I think there must be quite a following for this "pseudo ice cream" as shops (Blueberry, Froyoswirl, Scoop) have been popping all over town. Been to every place a few times and Blueberry was my favourite. But now that Qoola has opened, I would rather come here. First off, they have more flavours such as Chocolate and Raspberry, and crepes & waffles. I have been enjoying their slushee mixed with yoghurt. Secondly, the space is very inviting and there are more tables to sit at. The only complaint is that the yoghurt is sometimes too soft, but after telling one of the girls there, I was informed that the yoghurt is liquid based instead of powdered base and is healthier. I will definitely be back! Can't wait till the summer!!
