Primo's is one of Vancouver's first Mexican restaurants. Located on the corner of 12th and Granville.
This restaurant is really out of my way, but I decided to go because I had a coupon. Once the coupon was shown, everything went downhill. I think it was really not worth their while, so they gave us horrible service. Why offer a coupon deal, if you are so unhappy about it?
We waited for our food for over an hour. Never came to apologize or even a refill of complementary chips. When I asked for salsa, it was extra charge. The man that served us just didn't care and looked at us with disgust everytime we asked him for the food. Very disaapointed and never coming back.
Had dinner at Primo's last night (March 03) and a general 'thumbs-up' is what I can offer as a recommendation.
To be honest I wanted to leave in a mood to rave about the place - where oh where can I find a awesome Mexican restaurant in Vancouver - but I simply cannot. Not sure why - it's that elusive 'umph' that I was seeking but did not find. That said - I enjoyed the food (a tad pricey it has to be said). I had the jumbo grilled prawns on rice - excellent dish, but not sure if it was worth $22.50; had the ceviche as well - it was okay.
On the whole, a nice place for solid fare.
I tried Primos Mexican Grill for dinner. It has been around for many years with a decent following of customers. Which was evident when we arrived. Although the restaurant was dimly lit, the decor was unique. We were greeted upon entering and that same promptness continued throughout our meal. The menu was basic and the prices were a bit steep for the entrees. We started with nachos as an appetizer. Very traditional, nothing special. For dinner I ordered the chicken enchaladas. It was served with rice and beans. It was delicious and served very hot.
I would recommend Primos Mexican Grill for lunch or dinner. I would rate this restaurant a 7 out of 10. The service was good, food was quick to arrive and overall I enjoyed the visit.
We went to this Mexican restaurant at around 1:30PM and it was completely deserted; the dim lighting and lone server contributed to my assumption that the place was closed. However, the server promptly got us a table so we stayed. Though the food was decent, the portions were small; I'm not sure if it was because it was the lunch menu.
We received a basket of tortilla chips and salsa which were of good quality. Our order consisted of beef tacos, shrimp enchilada, and chile rellenos. Each entree comes with a side of Mexican rice (pilaf) and refried beans. The beef taco was quite small, the flavour was satisfactory but nothing special. The enchilada was also small (approximately the size of an iPhone), though I enjoyed it, I only wished it would be filling. The chile rellenos were smothered under a layer of sauce and cheese so it was difficult to make out that it was a stuffed pepper, nevertheless, it was decent in flavour. The sides of rice and beans were actually quite good, though perhaps they were enhanced by the fact that we were still hungry after finishing our meal. I could have probably eaten 2 or 3 of the main entrees before feeling full; the portions were definitely disappointing.
The restaurant itself is smartly decorated in dark tones and dimly lit for a more romantic feel. The server was very polite and served us promptly, though we happened to be the only table. The prices for the lunch menu seemed quite affordable, nothing costing over $13.50 for a plate of food. Unfortunately, the plates were too small to be satisfying and not worth the money.
These gentlemen really know how to make you feel at home.
We come into town maybe 10 times a year when we go to the Stanley - and everytime we go , we go to Primos. They always welcome us with a smile, a wonderful table, and our drinks without even having to order. I have allergies, and they always remember and make our food to our special order. We especially enjoy the pozole soup, the crab enchiladas, and the fajitas are delicious.
We also had a special family dinner with over 12 people there, and they were more than able to handle a large group, and made it a truly memorable location. Give Primo's a try...its a great friendly place for delicious food
We're so lucky that we found this place a few months ago...I can safely say that we've gone back about a half-dozen times since! We even hosted an incredible 30 person 40th birthday party with no troubles at all!!!
There are good fresh ingredients, excellent service (super-friendly staff!) and most of all, great location and food!
My fiance is vegetarian and I restrict beef but we've found many great items on this menu and continue to go back because we enjoy them so much. The 30 people who came to the party even thanked us for showing them this place because they all agreed it was delicious :)
The service was polite, we didn't have to wait for a seat, and the place was clean and decorated in an uncharacteristically restrained manner. In other words, a restaurant that you would expect in Vancouver, but never ever in the hardcore mexican restaurants you see south of the border.
My date and I both ordered the burritos. Every entree on the limited (1.5 pages) was at least $15. The burritos were completely flavorless, as were the rice and refried beans. It wasn't worth $7.50, let alone the $17.50 we paid for each plate.
Just go on over to Las Margaritas--you'll save $20 and you'll get better food.
I have been here a few times and it is alright. The food is decent with good portion but a little overpriced. The service from some who work there though is to be desired. There is no real welcoming feel or kindness which you would expect from a server or owner. But to the main point here, the Sangria is a complete disgrace! It is a pitcher full of ice with little wine, spirit(if any) and fruit(three small wedges of fruit, orange and lemon)It is mostly fruit juice. If I want Hawaiian punch I could make it at home for just pennies a glass opposed to the $18 or so it cost here. Definitely disappointing and not worth it.
Went for a dinner with the family. This place has been around forever, and is authentic mexican. Way better than Las margaritas, they should hardly be considered good mexican. The food was great, had an enchilada, salsa with the chips so good! If you want old school authentic mexican with great prices cant go wrong.
We have been going to this place for alost 30 years. It is still owned and operated by the family that has done such an amazing job all these years. Best chile rellenos and fresh lime margaritas. Ive read here that there are no good mexican restaurants in town well GO HERE You will never eat chile rellanos anywhere else.
There isn't much you can do to wreck Mexican food, but we like Primo's cuz the food is always good, fresh and the service is good. The thing we like the most is the ambiance - dark, intimate but tables big enough for larger parties. While it's busy, we rarely have to wait long - which makes dining there a pretty enjoyable experience. Highly recommended as a solid destination for some great comfort food.
I had tried this restaurant once years ago and because it was convenient decided to give it a try again. I should have learned the first time. The free chips and salsa were nice, but my meal was disgusting. It was supposed to be a sampling of 3 different dishes-rellenos, enchiladas and tostadas ( I think). The reason I'm not sure is because it was all covered in a puddle of sauce and melted cheese causing it all to be one indistinguishable mass. It looked as bad as it tasted. There were no identifiable flavours, no varieties in texture and it was almost impossible to know what you were eating. I had to dig and scrape to see what was what. No wonder the place had three tables when we arrived and one when we left. There was also no hot sauce offered or any options of varying degrees of spiciness and the food needed as much help as it could get. Did I mention this plate of slop was $20?
PLEASE!!! Don't give them any business. Places like this should not be able to survive for decades in a city with so many good restaurants.
This place mostly falls into the category of "nothing special, but not bad, either," except that the meals are about $20/plate. The service was friendly, but really slow--on a night when we were two of about 20 people in the whole restaurant. The place is really dark inside, to the point where we thought it was closed at first before trying the door; we had to use the candle to identify what was what on the plate.
The food was okay, but fairly bland and uninspired. Mexican is supposed to be rich in spices and flavors, but each thing on the combination plate tasted like the rest.
So, again, nothing special, but not bad--but not really worth the price, either.
We were very pleased with this restaurant. the food was delicious and more than sufficient. The service was unbelievable. We never waited unreasonably for anything. Even at the end; the bill came without us waiting too long.
