I actually accidentally walked in here. I was planning on going to "Lucky Noodle" which is right next door. Once I was in, I decided to give it a try as I like to sample different restaurants.
My daughter and I ordered off the lunch special menu. I did not notice much of a price difference between the regular menu and many of the lunch special items. We went with the Cumin Lamb with noodles and the Kao Pao Chicken with rice. Both were to come with sides and soup.
We received a few Steam Soy Beans in Pods (I can't remember the name of those things). They were kind of mushy, not like the lightly steamed ones served in Japanese restaurants. These were served in a tiny dish - it would have been an amuse bouche for ONE person, keep in mind - there were TWO of us.
We only received ONE soup (we ordered TWO lunch specials...). The soup was watery, flavourless broth anyway.
The chicken was quite greasy. The chicken was swimming in red oil. It was a little peppery - I was okay with it - but my daughter couldn't eat it. The cumin lamb was tasty - but the cabbage that it was stir fried with was not cooked enough. Also, it was more of a cabbage dish than a lamb dish as the cabbage was by far the predominant ingredient.
We both had a pop.
The bill came to just under $25 (excluding tip).
The server was pleasant enough, but she did the basics, take our order, bring tea, beverages and food.
I would stick to Lucky Noodle - which is right next door.
Always on the lookout for a good xiao loong bao, we heard that this restaurant was rated highly for this particular item. We werent disappointed. Each xiao loong bao sits in its own little dish in the bamboo steamer , keeping the dumpling skin and its tasty soup intact. 6 dumplings for $4 is deal, definitely. We also tried a three kinds of meat soup hotpot (fish, pork hock and chicken) with cabbage - not bad, but not great. However, LittleMao really enjoyed the soup. Based on the name, we had to try it: Bang bang chicken. It turned out to be a cold noodle dish with sliced chicken and cucumbers in peanut sauce, which we enjoyed. We also tried the spicy sliced pork with chinese cabbage, which turned out to a tasty choice (but was very spicy and necessitated a long drink of tea) The only downpoint was the service. The restaurant is a Mom-Pop operation and the evening we went, the restaurant was 80% full.. so the food, while very tasty, came very, very slowly. LittleMao had had enough after 1 hour and 45 minutes, so we had to get our Spicy Pork wrapped to go. But we'll be back to try some other dishes.
