Phat is a Jewish Deli in Yaletown that serves martinis and beer to go along with your kosher smokie or Montreal smoked meat. Choose from a selection of sandwich and bagel combos for a quick tasty lunch.
was in yaletown today with my teenage daughter and 60ish parents, looking for a place for lunch that'd please everyone. after reading the chalkboard menu on the wall, PHAT is where we chose.
we all tried something different and from my daughter's avocado and tomato benny, to dad's smoked meat on marble rye to my bagel with lox, cream cheese, capers and onions...it was phenomenal. nice portions (mom's shrimp, avocado on sourdough was piled high!), great flavor, tender, tender montreal smoked meat and lox, and crispy, hot PHAT fries. i'd had the lox and creamcheese option at another popular bagelry a week ago and it wasn't close to as good. and i paid more at the other place. so quite pleased with the value!
the ambience was casual, if not cozy, but whatever, we enjoyed some world cup on the tv and found the people working to be pleasant enough. we were welcomed, accomodated and the young guy at the till initiated conversation and asked about my day.
all of you who had a less positive experience, maybe try again?
that's my say. i'll go back for sure, there're more things on the menu i'd like to try. actually we ALL enjoyed it and my dad who i wasn't sure would really enjoy it?? he RAVED about his sandwich.
When you first walk in, you're greeted by a gallery of great hockey memorabilia including signed jerseys and hockey sticks on your way to the front counter. The place is clean and straight to the point, both in appearance and service.
You'll spend a good few minutes just trying to grasp the large menu which fills two full walls of the small eaterie, from chef salads to smoked meat sandwiches, this place has enough to satisfy everyone (even a vegetarian like me).
Most will say that nine bucks for a sandwich is expensive, and I would usually agree, but not after seeing the portions that they come in. The salads all come in a huge silver bowl that will leave you fully content, and the sandwiches are stacked so high that any more meat or veggies would make it topple right over, and everything is made fresh right in front of you.
The place is always jammed tight around lunch hour every day, so make sure to go before noon or after 2 if you just want to sit down and relax over a nice big meal.
PHAT is a must stop spot for anyone in the area, with a big appetite of course.
