Peaceful very tasty indeed!

After watching Diners Drivein's and Dives episode with the Peaceful restaurant we just had to try this place out.

We stopped at the Davie St. location only to find a sign in the window closed for reno's..we decided to head over to the West Broadway location and give this joint a whirl!

Its a small hole in the wall barely wide enough to stretch out your arms but it was VERY busy and the smell coming from the kitchen was overwhelmingly wonderful. I was drooling watching all the delicious looking plates of hot steaming food arrive at the tables, we couldn't wait to get seated.

The waitress was very pleasant and showed us the run down of the menu items and made suggestions for us to try! Beef Rolls were the first thing we wanted,,,man that crispy onion pastry surrounding that wonderful beef and Hoison sauce was just delectable, with the right amount of oily texture.

Next we had a plate of stir fried Shanghai Noodles with knife cut hand made noodles, lathered in a wonderful sauce with chicken, green onions and mushrooms, very tasty and steamy hot fresh!

The General Tsao's chicken plate was the best,,,I have never tasted chicken so tender and the nice tangy sauce that engulfed the food was so finger licking good!

Chinese Forest Vegetable plate was the 4th dish we ordered and were not disappointed at all,,usually you get a dish that is luke warm and accompanied with limp veges but not so here, everything was crisp, steaming hot and very fresh tasting. A great side dish for the Chicken!

All in all I would say this place warrants a visit,,,I know we are going back, the menu has a lot of items to try and I bet it could turn into a weekly haunt if the first visit is any indication of how well everything is prepared.

Peace out all you foodies!

Why was this place on food network's Diners, Drive Ins & Dives?
By BigAnthony of Vancouver (54 Reviews)

My wife and I saw this place on Diners Drive Ins & Dives on the food network so we came for lunch today to try it out. When we arrived it was busy and full, we had to wait only about 2 minutes for a table. It's not the nicest looking place, service is good and friendly.
We ordered - Peaceful Beef Roll - I enjoyed it, was tasty.
Pam fried pork dumplings - $7,50 - meh ok-average
Dan-Dan Noodles - $7.50 - these were tasty
We drank tea, our lunch came to about $24
Overall it was good food, I enjoyed it but I don't think it was amazing or super memorable where I am craving it to return. Sure I would eat here again but wouldn't go out of my way if I wasn't in the neighborhood.

Whats the hype all about?
By minniehe of Downtown Vancovuer (5 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, March 12, 2012 - 5:47pm [Take-out]

I came here on a Sunday morning, and I ordered take out at 11 am ( the store's opening time)..and I asked the lady over the phone about the wait, and she said that my order would be ready in 20 minutes. So I came in 20 minutes, and I paid her, and then she told me that it was not ready yet, and she was very grouchy about it ( she probably did not want to bother with me because for take-outs she will not receive any tips). So I stood outside, since the restaurant was already filled to capacity, and I waited for 1.5 hours for takeout! At this point, I was really hungry, and so I grabbed the take-out and went home. I ordered a beef roll, pork dumplings, beef with hand pulled noodle stir fry, and pan fried sticky cake. The beef roll was quite tasty, and everything else was really greasy and quite gross. The dumplings were not cooked properly, they are suppose to be potstickers, meaning they should be quite crispy on the bottom. However, these dumplings were very soggy and very doughy, it almost tasted like raw flour. The stir-fry consisted of veggies, 5 slices of beef and 5-10 strands of noodles, and about 4-5 tbsp of oil. The sticky cake was basically deep fried, as there was oil leaking from the takeout box, and the stuffing in the cake consisted of 3 pieces of peanuts, with a very oily/sugary mixture, that tasted really awful. All in all, the food is not too good, and the wait time is crazy, and the servers are really rude.

I saw this restaurant on Diners Drive in's and dives on Fri day evening, the food looked amazing so I picked up the phone and made a booking for Saturday night I was told they only takes reservations for 5 or more which was fine because we were 6. I called on Saturday afternoon to confirm and was told 'sorry but we can't carry over your reservation' whatever that means. Anyway we went and had to wait about 20 mins for a table, which is ok. The food was very ordinary nothing special - just another restaurant that serves most the menu deep fried with noodles. Not rushing back anytime soon. I sometimes wonder if all the hype can be harmful to a restaurant.

amazing food, but incredibly busy

Submitted Saturday, April 7, 2012 - 3:41pm [Dine in]

came here around 4pm on a sunday and it was already packed with a line out the door. we waited about 40 minutes to sit and the food itself took awhile too. fortunately it was all worth it! had the famous beef rolls (which were as awesome as they're hyped up to be) and the sichuan beef soup noodles which were just PERFECT. i grew up eating northern chinese cuisine and this brought to mind the glorious beef noodles i had on weekends as a kid. granted, i haven't experienced too much of the menu, but what i did eat was so incredible i can't wait to be back. service is perfectly adequate, though food is a little slow in arriving. again, the wait is the only off-putting aspect of this place, but that only speaks to its popularity.

Dan-dan goodness!

Submitted Friday, May 28, 2010 - 2:30pm [Dine in]

We came here for a late meal yesterday night and again made a trek to a restaurant we've been meaning to go to.

It was almost closing time so we quickly scoured through the menu and ordered. The space is long and narrow and the tables are cramped together so large gatherings aren't the best idea. Pretty clean all around until you step into the washrooms, which looked pretty scary.

My friend ordered a clear broth noodle soup which he felt was bland though he seemed to forget clear soups are usually bland. I went with the dan-dan noodles which came with a spicy and rich peanut sauce. A little spicier than I was expecting but was fantastic for soaking up into the noodles. The fresh homemade noodles had great bite and texture and made the entire bowl addicting. We ordered the fried buns and beef rolls on the side, each of which were excellent, especially the beef rolls. Again, the right amount of greasiness makes the entire dish all the better.

Service was neither over the top nor poor, just right and servers have a good grasp of english.

There were oodles of other choices to pick from so we'll have to come back, and with an emptier stomach but boy, those dan-dan noodles!

Service was so so (it was packed and we waited 25 mins, even with a reservation) but the food was damn delicious. The beef rolls are to die for! The noodles were tasty too... but did I mention their beef rolls? I can eat them, and eat them, and eat them. Great place to go for some good chinese food. Will be back.

I really enjoy this place.

Whenever I have a hankering for something greasy (Chinese) this place is at the top of my list. Its near Sha Lin but is much more flavorful.

I have tried their Schezuan beef noodle soup, which for beef noodle lovers, is another great one to ad to the repertoire different kinds from different countries/areas. The beef tasted incredible, the the noodles were fresh and delicious. There were also some leafy vegetables, which were nice. GREAT dish, ideal for sharing because its huge.

I also got the beef roll, which was fine but I am not crazy for it. I would sooner go for their xiaolongbao, juicy soup dumplings.

This place is very affordable too! two can be stuffed for less than 20$

highly recommended.

Nice, inexpensive change of taste

Good, reasonably clean Chinese place, it seems nice I could actually peer into the semi-open preparation area.
Service was good and they are well-equipped to deal with non-Chinese customers, which is a nice thing to see.

Food is not your usual HK-style tea restaurant or Cantonese fare which is very refreshing. More of the northern style stuff which is very different. We wimped out and asked "mild". oooh boy, I can only imagine the "spicy" setting, this would rival the killer stuff from the Korean and Indian places.
Yeah, their beef rolls are not bad, but I've had more than my share around town so I'll hesitate to call it amazing. It's a contender though.

To top it all off, it's very inexpensive. Good food, good price, good service, what's not to like? It's not a fancy place but with the extensive and different menu, you could easily squeeze out 3-4 trips to this place to sample everything.

Came here twice and both were good experiences. Their noodle soup are huge, could feed 1.5 person. They're all tasty and the noodles are handmade.
The service is decent. Some could speak fluent English. And they know their dishes well.
We ordered a bunch of things last time and everything tasted consistent. I don't have any thing in particular to recommend, it is best to ask the server.

Having dined here a couple of times, I've ordered the "Peaceful noodles" (stirfried thick noodles with prawns, bbq pork, thin carrots and green veg), the beef roll (northern pancake with thinly sliced beef, green onions and hoisin sauce), the potstickers, the soup buns, and the soup noodles with pork chops.

All of which were pretty good, especially the fresh hand made noodle dishes.

Service was, by my standard for chinese restaurants, very good.

The room was bright, but otherwise unremarkable.

Worth a return visit.

Mrs. C wanted to try the place based on the good reviews on this site. We took a couple of friends to share the meal.

The restaurant is quite small and a little bit dingy inside, but considering the rents in the area, we weren't expecting a palace. The server was very friendly and she easily changed gears from Mandarin to Cantonese to take our order. We had the corn bread buns, eggplant with garlic and chilies, Shanghai dumplings, ground pork buns, Shanghai noodles, and the house specialty beef roll.

All were pretty good, and the beef roll deserves special mention. I wouldn't say it was the greatest restaurant experience ever, but it was good enough. Next time I will try the famous lamb stew.

Recommended.

Had Better

Submitted Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - 11:40pm [Dine in]

food: xiao long bao typical. baked ribs was not as tender as we had hoped. curry stir fry noodles was a bit plain...i was expecting something more since it was "northern". chicken soup noodle was good. very light yet tasty. i thought the food was ok...i've had better "northern" food.

service: waitress was very friendly and polite. she made suggestions. food was brought out in a timely manner and tea refilled.

ambiance: interior decorating is a little confusing...they must not have made that many changes fr previous establishment. quite small inside. only able to seat 2 larger tables. most other tables are only suitable for 2-4 seating. small radio that plays quietly in the back.

overall: i was a little disappointed in the food b/c of all the hyped reviews. this is not to say the food was bad...there's just way better northern/shanghai food esp in rmd for a few bucks more (northern delicacy, shanghai wonderful). this is not to say i would not return should i be in the area.

Worst Value for Takeout
By carrotstop of Vancouver (22 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, December 6, 2010 - 2:44pm [Take-out]

A recent kitchen fire took out 4 of the best-valued cheap asian eateries around the W. Broadway/Cambie region this early december. The Peaceful Restaurant was left unharmed- making this place an unfortunate alternative for lunchers.
I ordered a veggie and tofu stir-fry on rice to go. The order came out relatively fast~ 15min. I paid the $9 and skiddadled.
Arriving back at work, I open the bag and found no utensils and no napkins. WTF. How can a take-out be so un-thoroughly prepped?
Disappointment sanked in when I open the box. The container was 85%-90% filled with rice. There were about 4 slices of tofu, 3 broccoli florets, and 3 carrot slices, and a few cabbage leaves. You know you are getting a shitty deal when you can count the individual ingredients in a stir-fry. The sauce was abismal and definitely not tasty enough to go with the 3.5 cups of rice they served.
I agree with other reviewers- this place sucks in value. Not worth spending $9 on a bucket full of rice.

Poor Service! Food is ok, small portion. Prices are not that reasonable considering small portion!

Unpleasant experience!

Went there for a late lunch by myself (about 2:30pm). I was initially seated at a two-people table which was right across from the hot kitchen. There's no air-conditioning in the restaurant, only had the door popped open....so, it was just too hot to seat close to the kitchen on a warm summer day!

Since it was about 2:30pm which was after the busy lunch hours and the restaurant was pretty empty (only 5 customers there - 2 tables), I asked to move to the table that was right by the door where there's some cool air coming in and told the girl the reason why I wanted to move. Happened that it was a table for four people, so the girl unwillingly let me to do so. Another girl didn't like it either....she asked the girl who helped me move how many people I was with...sounding like - I (one person) shouldn't be taking a table that's for four people!

The servers there were very unfriendly, especially the young guy and second girl (the one who asked about if I was with anyone....)

I was pretty much left alone the whole time after that....no one asked if I needed anything or if everything was fine (which I actually don't really mind...it's just that the whole unfriendly and cold feelings that you're getting from them.)

I ate a little bit less than half of the plate, so asked the "second girl" to put the rest in a box for me to take home. When I opened the box the next day and was going to eat it for my lunch, I realized that the girl only packed 1/2 of what was left on plate for me!!! That was so bad!!! I wasn't that hungry when I was in the restaurant, and therefore specifically saved a bigger portion for my lunch the next day, then it turned out that it went to the garbage and I didn't get all of what I paid for!

You have to pay $1 extra if you want to have the noodles instead of rice, which is what I did! You don't get much noodle because the portion is small. In my case, some of what I paid extra got thrown in the garbage.

I'm not going to go back!!

Next time when I want to have the similar food that they serve, I'll walk down a few doors next to it and go to the Shalin Restaurant (I think that's what's called) because the service there is much better and the portion of the dishes is bigger, also there is no such thing that you need to pay extra $$ for having some noodle.

Xiao-Long Bao's Were Great!
By stevendrowe of Vancouver (43 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 10:18pm [Dine in]

This restaurant was recommended on the Translink's Buzzer Blog for great food and near the Broadway City Canada Line station, so we thought we'd give it a go and wasn't disappointed.

We only order a couple of items plus rice since we wanted a light lunch. The long beans with pork were great, quite a large dish, too much for two people and we took some home. The best was the Xiao-Long Bao which were REALLY GOOD! Probably the best we've had since arriving in Vancouver a year ago. I highly recommend them.

Service was good, very friendly and courteous staff, very attentive yet left us alone to enjoy our meal at the right time.

We paid $22 for all our food and drink. For the amount of food we got we thought is was very good value.

The restaurant was very smart, clean, the staff looked smart and relaxed. Probably my only criticism would be how narrow it was but they had arranged the tables and chairs appropriately.

I would definitely return to this restaurant at my earliest opportunity. They have coupons on their website!

I took out lunch here today and had dinner for the first time here last week. Nice to see a good Northern Chinese restaurant on Broadway & Cambie. The beef rolls were good and reminded me of Peking Duck. The Szechwan cucumber dish was refreshing and different. The Kung Pao and Green Beans were pretty standard. But the nice part of the experience was the enthusiasm of the staff (I understand this is a family-run biz) and friendliness. The menu is huge so I'll keep going back ad trying more things.

This place serves hand-made noodles in a wide selection of soups, stir fries, and hot pots. My personal favorites are the Szechuan beef noodle soup and the Xin Jiang noodle hot pot. The dumplings and the peaceful beef roll are also very good. The rest of the menu is hit-and-miss but it's the noodles and fried pastries that keep bringing me back.

I really wanted to like this place

Went for lunch and was delighted with the menu. A great selection and all reasonably priced. The lunch special section also gave you all the menu types you would need. The wait staff were friendly and efficient. Ambiance was fine.
Although I almost never order deep fried anything, General Tsao's chicken is a favorite so I gave it a go. The hand made noodles that I ordered with it for an extra 1$ were good and the sauce just hot enough. But the chicken was so overbattered that I had to dismantle each piece as there seemed to be 7 parts batter per chicken part. In the end I regret my 2 rating for the food because it applies to this dish only and those that like all that batter may even like it. As I feel the other menu items will fare much better I will try it again soon.

Sorry, that should say that I WASN'T rushed. I definitely had time to finish my tea and digest my food a bit before leaving. When I left the servers were extremely friendly and thanked me for coming.

I wish there was a way to change that without submitting a new review, but there isn't so this is split in two. A good choice. I felt very welcome.
