Located in the Renaissance Vancouver Hotel (Harbourside).
We went there on Wednesday to use our coupon. The ambiance of the restaurant was good and our table was by the window with a decent view. We were there at 6pm, and we were seated promptly with our reservation.
Our server was an older gentleman. He was friendly but forgetful at times. He had to read out the special and the cut of the day out of his note pad, which we found just a little odd. He also got one of our appetizers wrong, he gave us a crab salad and an order of mussels instead of 2 orders of mussels. We thought he also got so frazzled when the restaurant started filling up during the latter part of our stay, so much that he forgot about us after he gave us the dessert menu and didn't come back for 20 minutes.
In terms of food, the crab salad was ok, nothing special about it. The mussels were delicious, and they were GIANT mussels!! Could use a little bit more broth though to go with the bread. Before our meal, we were served each a herb and cheese bun. It was a deep fried bread ball, a little greasy, but the flavour was good and the salsa that the bread was served with was soooo good. Must be their signature thing, because it even came with a little card with the recipe for both things. I'm definitely going to try making the salsa.
We ordered their cut of the day, which was flat iron steak with mushroom sauce. They was alright. It was cooked perfectly to medium rare, but it was under-seasoned and the asparagus they served with the steak was way overcooked. I ordered the lamb loin with gnocchi. I ordered my lamb medium rare, but it was more on the medium side. The gnocchi was doughy and mushy...I've never had gnocchi like those before. It was so bad that I had to get our server to bring me some roasted veggies. He later brought me some saute broccolini, which was quite good. Overall, the entrees were definitely less than what we expected.
We ordered the chocolate tart and creme brulee for dessert. Both very good. My creme brulee was very smooth and creamy, and the brulee was done just right.
I might come back again for their mussels or after dinner drink and dessert, but probably not for dinner.
We came with a coupon. I don’t think we would have without the coupon so it did its job.
The Dungeness crab salad was poor. The crab was watery and had no taste. I complained to the waiter and his only response was to assure me that it was real crab. I hadn’t considered the possibility it was fake, I thought it had been previously frozen.
My lamb main course was quite good. Deserts were OK.
My after dinner coffee wasn’t great. I drink it black. The price was outrageous.
My wife and I will not be going back.
