Meh Sushi
By thecritic of Vancouver (376 Reviews)

The scallop cone has always been a good indicator for me as to how good the sushi is. The scallop cone I had at Opera Sushi was probably the worst I have ever had: very chewy seeweed, fishy scallops that were covered up with some weird sauce (in addition to the usual mayo)..it almost made me puke in my mouth. The restaurant itself has a lot of promise and true to its name, its walls are covered in opera posters and records with opera music playing softly in the background. I probably will not be back, too many sushi restuarants in this town.

decent sushi slow service

This place is okay for takeout or if you enjoy listening to sushi. They have some neat sushi with black rice and flax if you're into that kind of thing. Unfortunately, the chef is the only one making the sushi so if you don't order ahead you'll wait a long time. It's busy around dinner hour because it's small.

a welcome change

Absolutely delicious and innovative sushi. Rather than your standard white rice, Opera uses their own combination of brown and black sticky rice for their rolls (upon request.) You pay a premium for the black rolls, but it's worth it. Portions are pretty big. They have a comparatively large selection of vegetarian rolls too, which is always a nice surprise. Don't miss the seaweed salad, it's the best I've ever had.

Healthy, local sushi with character

This is one of my favorite affordable sushi places. Their black sushi is fabulous--I've never tried anything similar. They don't add anything to the rice so it's very healthy. Their Wakame Miso Soup is excellent (if you like seaweed!). They are very nice there - it's a mom and pop operation in a hole in the wall with funny diner furniture and the walls are lined with opera records. It's got character! If you're looking for white-rice sushi and a lush decor, this is not the place for you. It's great for takeout too. Ate it through exams and never felt sluggish.

Terrible Value

1 Caliornia roll and one Spicy Scallop roll came to over $18. The sushi was warm (?) and too salty. Neer going back again. The purple rice was innovative, but not AT ALL what I was expecting after hearing raving reviews. Nice opera though. Rolls were good size, but terrible. The yellow logo of the face gave me nightmares. The grains of rice were qite mushy and they gave us one pack of soysauce for takeout. THe nori was chewy. But, by all means, go ahead, the nutritional benefits are supposed to be quite extensive.

Opera Sushi

I went there for the thai black rice avocado sushi roll, which was delicious. Service was slow, classical music was too loud and annoying. I would have preferred soft Japanese traditional koto folk music. The owner and his wife were grumpy and unfriendly. She told me she hated the opera music, but her husband makes her play it. No ambience whatsoever. No joy. The cook and his wife are two pathetic, miserable human beings who don't like people and don't enjoy their work. It clearly shows. Pity, because the food is delicious.

Bland Sushi
By iateit of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, April 21, 2008 - 7:51pm [Dine in]

I'm not sure what the people who said the food was good ordered, but I found the food here to be quite bland and unappetizing. The avocado roll was mushy and tasteless, with chewy seaweed. The agedashi tofu had a bland, oily batter. I ordered one piece of inari, and it was ok except for the fact that there was hardly any rice. I don't know if their specialty rolls are any better, but it failed my standard sushi test.

It was also very overpriced - my order for one avocado roll, agedashi tofu ($4.95!!), and one piece of inari came to over $10. I guess the atmosphere is nice, especially if you like opera music, but I still have a waxy taste in my mouth from the food.

Sushi was great but...

I had seen all of the reviews about the food here being fantastic so decided to check it out last night with a friend. The service was really slow (there seemed to be just the wife and possibly 1 other person in the back) but the food was fantastic! The gyoza's had so much flavor. We also tried their Black Sushi. Absolutely fantastic!
Definitely would go back.

Too little, much too late

As with all the other reviewers, we found the service abysmally slow, even abhorrent. We waited at least an hour for our food (which merely comprised standard nigiri sushi on the much-hyped 'black' rice), watched at least one other table give up, and never received a portion of our order. We never even received refills of tea!

Once we did receive our food, I will agree that the 'black rice' (a mix of brown and wild rice, from what I can tell) was unique, and the sushi in itself was good (a bit too warm, though). But for sushi that's just average, it's just not worth the wait. I don't think we'll ever return again.

Incredeeble

Not only a unique bent on sushi rice [flax black], Opera has great niche music too, which adds an interesting theme to their premise. The sashimi is delectible. I suggest a Sashimi Don if it suits your pallette. Especially nice after a rigorous work-out.

More than just opera...

I have been to Opera Sushi at least 4 times and have enjoyed it everytime I have went. The sushi is very fresh, and I especially enjoy the dessert sushi (strawberry). The service is fairly 'hands-off', as the only people working there are the 2 owners. There is a beverage counter where you help yourself to water, and the atmosphere is casual. I enjoy the opera music and the many old opera record sleeves lining the walls. I think that if I have taken the time to add a review here, I obviously feel that is a great restaraunt to recommend to others. It has a good selection of vegetarian options (that is why I go) and the inari sushi and the gomae are the best I have had in Van!

Try the spicy rolls
By christine33 of Kitsilano (1 Review)

I go back time and time again for their spicy salmon and spicy dynamite rolls. They are unbelievably tasty. The couple who own the place are very nice and while the atmosphere isn't the greatest, its a perfect spot for a light lunch or dinner. Also great, they have a healthier sushi option, called "black sushi", something unique to check out.
