I tried this place because I was enticed by the lamb special for $11.99. Mrs. C and I sat on the patio because it was a nice evening, but it felt like I was sitting in a chainsmoker's lung. Everyone was puffing away, despite being in so-called smoke free Vancouver. The server seemed more interested in harassing an old lady who brought a tiny cake to celebrate her friend's birthday (they actually took the cake away!), so the smokers went unchallenged.
I had the lamb, and Mrs. C had lasagna. It took ages to arrive. When it finally arrived, I noted that the lamb came with a piece of potato, some rice and Greek salad. It was okay, but not spectacular. The “lasagna” was actually a not very nice dish of tortellini with a cheese camouflage, but Mrs. C. didn’t want to wait for the correct food, so she ate it anyway.
We also had some beer, but this place has some eclectic glassware. My pint of beer was about the same size as the glass my spouse ordered. The next table got the smallest glass I’ve seen with beer in it. Not exactly consistent.
Finally we got out of there, but we both needed a shower to decontaminate.
We had an early dinner tonight. Came in and seated ourselves, the place was freezing. Nothing fancy, just your average restaurant. The lasagna $9.95 which came with garlic toast, was okay. The roast lamb $13.95 came with potatos, greek salad, rice, pita bread. The side dishes were pretty bland. The lamb didn't taste like it was just cooked but tasted like it had been sitting around for awhile. Maybe the lamb chops would have been a better choice? Doesn't matter, as we probably won't be returning.
I must have walked past this place a thousand times when I lived in the West End but never went in, and if I did, I can't remember. I recall I always passed this place by bcecause it looked like just another one of those weird haunts of the West End locals: serving mediocre food and weak coffee. Actually went in last night and was pleasantly surprised. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was solid. Had saganaki (salty) and calamari (great) for apps and beef souvlaki (good) and roast lamb (great) for din. Half litre of house red and the bill came to $50.00 Not bad on a cold November night... hit the spot. By the way, it is a West End local haunt but without the shut in weirdness and weak coffee. Seems like a reliable and sturdy Greek resto to me. Deserves better than most previous reviews.
Good for lunch. Prompt service if you arrive on the early side, 11-11:45 am. After noon, the lone waitress can only do so much. The food is pretty good, good portions and taste. Get the Lunch Special Chicken Breast. You will not regret it. $10 well spent, specially considering the tough competition in the neighborhood for the lunch crowd.
Not great, but pretty good place. Cannot comment on dinner prices and value.
I live just a few blocks away from Olympia and I am a regular patron of , what I have experienced to be one of the best places to go to for Greek food and pizza in the West End!
I have tried most things on their menu, whether it's the roast lamb, pizza, or their calamari, and find that the food is always fresh, hot, and delicious! By the way, my favorite meal to order is their 'Manager's Special' pizza!
We came in to have a bite to eat last night. We were able to seat ourselves which was great because shortly after that they switched to having people wait to be seated and I noticed people standing there waiting 10 minutes to even be approached by a staff person.
They seemed very understaffed with only 1 person in the kitchen and 2 people serving. The woman who was serving also seemed to be helping out in the kitchen but her hair was down and loose.
We waited about 20 minutes before we were able to order. The food took about 45 minutes to reach us. The food was incredibly salty and substandard. All told, we were there for 1 & 1/2 hours and didn't get the food until about 20 minutes before we left.
Aside from this, it was absolutely freezing in the restaurant. While it is May, it was still a cold evening. They had all of the doors open with no heat on.
We will both never, ever go to this restaurant again. Terrible!
Decided to go here with the family one night, and boy was it a mistake. In a partially empty restaurant the service was not very good at all. They did not seem to care about providing to the customers' needs. We had to wait around 15 minutes just for a refill of water. Our experience became even worse when the food arrived. The steak was dry and bland, and the souvlaki was nothing special either.
OMG! I`ve had some bad steaks in my time but NOTHING compaired to the terrible steak I was served here. The steak sandwich arrived luke warm and tasted off. It was so tough I couldn`t even put my fork into it, let alone cut into the thing. It was like eating an old boot. The hugh slice of stale garlic toast it was lying only added to the disappointment. As the staff stood around and chatted amongst themselves no one came by to check if the meal was good or not. Of course they knew it wasn`t. We had 3 different servers, had to ask for refills and the last server literally threw the check on the table and ran. Unacceptable! Just avoid this place, the food is simply aweful!!!
I've passed by this restaurant many times, but have never actually eaten here, so tonight we decided to try it out.
Overall, the servers were nice and the decor gave the restaurant a very cozy feel. The food, however, could probably use some improvement.
We were looking forward to having nice calamari for starters, but instead, we found that they had a rather gooey texture. The breading was not very crispy, either. For the entrees, I debated on lasagna or a Greek dish. I decided to get the tiger prawn souvlaki and my friends had the lamb. The lamb looked good from afar, but one of my friends complained that it was too soft and overdone. I noticed that my tiger prawns were a bit greasy, and the dressing on the Greek salad tasted too much like vinegar. The rice (and pita bread), as what the previous reviewer mentioned, were probably the best parts of the meal.
I wonder if the pasta or lasagna dishes are any better. Maybe I'll come back some other time.
The pizza is good. The management or their policies less so. I have been a loyal customer for the past six years. Their pizza is on the pricier side and i overlook this for the quality. Recently ordered pizza. It took over an hour to make it up the five blocks. Then the order was wrong. I called and they offered a replacement or half off next time. Really!? Wait another hour. I opted for no. The manager/ owner was rude and defensive; quoting policy was more important then accepting responsibility for this crap service. I will not go back. I encourage everyone to think twice about getting their pizza for delivery. Thanks.
We ordered take out and were told 45 mins. for arrival, food was at our door in 30, hot dishes were hot and cold were cold everything was very good especially the lamb and ribs, well worth the price which was very reasonable. We will order from here again for sure.
After living in the westend for so long, this restaurant always intrigued me whenever I walked by it. Finally, after moving a block away from the restaurant, a girlfriend and I decided to give it a shot. You walk into the restaurant, and you seat yourself. At first, we thought that the server was a little rude, but she seemed like she was having an off night. Being our polite selves, we showered her with our charming personalities and that brought down her walls a little bit, in fact ALOT! So we decided to test out the most common foods that we would have at either Taki's or Stephos (the most popular Greek/Italian infusion restaurants on Davie). The first appetizer we ordered was Tzatziki with Pita. Very Good. On to the entrees. I ordered lasagna and she ordered moussaka which came very quickly. Since we made sure that we were respectful of our server, she was very tentative to us, and always made sure that we were doing okay. The lasagna was EXCELLENT. It was fresh out of the oven, and oozed cheesy goodness which made my mouth water. My friend's moussaka? Also very good! It came with rice, potatos, greek salad and tzatziki. The overall service was excellent and the food was pretty good. One critique.....this restaurant needs to modernize a little bit, just because the ambiance is a little gloomy. The value for the food is reasonable and the restaurant as a whole, deserves much more than the reviews that have been given.
Some friends and I were really looking forward to some Greek food but wanted to try a different place then usual, so we went to Olympia. Biggest mistake we could have made.
We ordered the Potato Skins, Calamari, Saganaki and Greek Salad. The Potato Skins were bland and were just potatoes cut in half. The Calamari had gooey batter with far too much bread in it. The Saganaki was another disappointment, the cheese was burned and stuck to the pan, making it nearly impossible to remove from the pan. We then had the Greek Salad which had unripened tomatoes. All together, the food was crap.
The service was practically non existent, the waitress seemed unhappy and didn't seem t care about us. I had to wait 15 minutes for my empty water to be filled before i got fed up and pulled out my bottled water to fill it myself. The server did not give one quality check, so we had no chance to tell her how bad the food was.
Although the prices were reasonable, the value would have been great if the food had been remotely tasty.
The decor was that of a typical Greek restaurant, except the paintings of Greece were faded and chipped.
I will definitely NOT be returning.
I went with a couple friends to this restaurant as we were wanting Greek food after hanging out at the beach for a couple hours. We decided to stop into this restaurant as the bus stopped really close by and we were too lazy to walk.
First time to this restaurant and it was not a very pleasant experience.
The waitress was really not all that good at picking up on what we needed, e waited for at least 10 minutes to have our orders taken and she was did not seem all that happy with us.
The food came and it was alright.
We had lamb souvlaki which was okay, but the rice it came with was pretty close to being JUST cooked so it was a little hard.
The hummus was pretty good, too much garlic for my taste though.
The spinach salad was quite good, although the tomatoes were not ripe enough.
The lasagna a la olympia was decent, but there was more cheese and tomato sauce than there was pasta or meat.
After we finished the waitress came by and we asked for our bill. I don't know what it was but it took almost 10 minutes to receive our bill. Then more waiting for them to take our money ... we gave up waiting and walked to the counter to pay. Then MORE waiting to get our change.
There was an elderly couple who sat down beside our table. The waitress greeted them nicely and said everything with a smile. Then she walked over to our table and the smile disappeared instantly. I don't know what it was with the waitress or what we did wrong to receive that kind of crappy service. Sure, we're a group of teenage girls, but it wasn't like we were being rude or loud or obnoxious. The service could have been better BY FAR.
I have to say that this restaurant is always a good dining experience for me and my friends.
I have been coming here for a few yours now and have always found a friendly, knowledgeable staff and the Greek music and decor make me feel its authenticity.
I've never been disappointed by the food, whether I have the pizza, the lamb, or one of my favourite dishes, baked lasagna.
I hope more people take the time to visit this restaurant for a really nice treat!
I'm amazed that this place has survived as long as it has. I can only assume that the customers have never had decent greek food. We've been there twice (my wife's idea) but won't be going back. Appalling.
Calamara was dried up and tasteless, souvlaki was over-cooked and tasteless. etc. etc. They must be doing something right as the place is always full - why would anyone want to return? Typical of the $20 a head restaurant in Vancouver - you are very lucky to find a gem and if you do keep it to yourself. Enough said?
I'll start off by saying that I have eaten here before and it has been average. Just OK. The last time I went there put the proverbial nail in the coffin when it comes to this restaurant.
We sat down and waited a good 5-10 minutes to be served by our disinterested server. She asked for our drink order and sensing a lack of attention we decided to order everything at once. 10 mins later the drinks show up. A further 10 mins later our server left the restaurant, "looking for chicken". That was the last we saw of her. Looking about the restaurant we saw lots of people without any service, including one server sat on a free table head down on the top looking sick. I hope he hadn't eaten there.
We left a $10 and left. Don't bother going. Just go to Maria's Taverna across the street; better food and some resemblance of service i.e. someone does it.
I am a life long Vancouver resident, and I absolutely love my Pizza, period. I grew up and still live around the commercial drive area, so anyone that knows this part of town .... we currently have the best pizzerias by far. As a kid growing up though, we had Little billy's, Trocadero, Romana's, and of course Olympia. all were family style hangouts, and all their pies were unique and excellent during that time. only Trocs is still in the hood... Little billys and Romana are in Burnaby. the other night we were cruising around Denman and I saw the original Olympia with the light blue and white decor... and its been 20 years since ive had their pie, so here was the opportunity. We sat down in some old style chairs and instantly I was back in high school! lol. Now the best part: the ownership may have changed, but it seems these folks didnt change a thing with the original pie recipe. this is old school 70's - early 80's pie all the way, and its fresh, and its absolutely freakin delicious. We had the vegetarian with some meat thrown in, and the veggies were actually still crunchy and alive. think of a pie thats not too thick, and not real thin either, cooked a tad extra on the upper side. Its all about the taste folks, and this place has it in spades. A must try for die hards like me who will never order death-on-cardboard dominoes, little ceasars, panago, et al.
I've read on this board that some feel it takes too long to get your pie. You want a great pie, you have have to prepare it and cook it. Chill out, have another beer and people-watch. Some say its expensive pizza?? I have no idea what that means, but if you want a buck a slice special from the makers at Dupont Chemical, go right ahead. Dont care for the decor? I personally hope they never change it as it gives new meaning to "old school cool", and in my opinion, its a Vancouver landmark.
Anyways, I have a reason to go DT again, and im going to try their lamb shoulder ..... heard its delish as well...
I was a bit surprised to see the low ratings. I just tried this joint for lunch yesterday, and at least what I ordered was excellent. I will vouch for the roast lamb and greek salad. Girlfriend had lasagna and that was mediocre. Value was great - $10 for roast lamb! Service was decent, although some empty tables had leftover plates that took a while to be cleared. The waitress didn't look motivated, but she treated us well.
I went to this restaurant a few days ago with a bunch of friends and everyone had an awesome time. The food was really yummy. We all shared the calamari and it was super delicous. I had ordered the chicken souvlaki for dinner and it was also really good. A friend of mine ordered the roast lamb and it looked yummy as well. I asked her and she said it was good the best she has ever had she said it was very flavorful. I believe i will be becoming a regular at this restaurant. I have been here three times and all the times i have been here the food has been great and the service was pretty good as well. The value for the food is awesome my souvlaki only cost $12.95 and i got a lot of food, i mean ALOT that i had to pack some to go. Overall i love this restaurant and reccommend it to anyone who's looking for good, yummy food for a great price. Also had there pizza the first time i went and that was also super good.
