Gimme The Food and Forget The Rest

Issues like ambience don't resonate in a place like this. Its a faceless restaurant on a non-descript part of the street with a instantly forgettable interior. Service was attententive and friendly. However, the food was well above average, for the most part. Pan fried dumplings, spicy green beans with minced pork and and Shanghai fried thick noodles with XO sauce were all great. Really. The duck on rice... merely OK. So. if you're a wanting Chinese food while on Robson, here's a solid spot.

A change for the better, I think

Oji has gone through a couple of menu changes since it opened in the the summer. It started off as a pan-asian restaurant, but it's since gone to a mostly chinese menu, and I think it's for the best (most pan-asian restaurants I've tried turned out to be mediocre at everything).

I've tried the beef & seasonal greens with rice, the brisket and noodle soup, and the chow mein, all of which were pretty good.

The room is a curious mix of dark wood, deep red and black with lighting that feels like it belongs in a art gallery rather than a restaurant (the lighting should be more subdued and closer to the tables rather than beaming down from the high ceilings), but I'm probably kinda nitpicking about this.

The service, by the standard of most chinese restaurants, was attentive and courteous.

Bubble tea?
By diningdandy of downtown vancouver (56 Reviews)

The food in this place is above solid but between solid and outstanding i would say its closer to a 4. I came here on a sunny day when i read the sign outside that said bubble tea. Looking for a sugary fix and some light dim sum i strolled into this place with little expectations. From the outside this place looks like a hole in the wall kinda place but when you walk in its pretty big and surprisingly nice. I orderd the shrimp dumplins which were above par and came with a nice plum sauce, wonton soup which was very good and chicken skewers that were cooked perfectly and came with a peanuty sauce then i orderd bubble tea. The waiter looked surprised. "We dont have bubble tea here." he said. I was kind of shocked because after the meal i checked their neon sign and sure enough it said bubble tea. I almost wanted to go back in and say something but i figured i should just leave it be. Im going back today to see if that signs still up but overall very good dimsum and very nice waiter. The prices seemed fair for a downtown restaurant im sure you could go out to richmond and find cheaper dim sum but keep in mind when your eating downtown things that arent a commercial chain will always be a bit pricier because of the more expensive location.

Surpringly good

Was expecting the usual downtown lunch place, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the quality of the service. Selection for dim sum was decent, missing some of my favorites, but made up for it in the quality of the dim sum. Lots of prawns in their dim sum dishes and food came out quickly. Will definitly be going back to try other items...

Great Find

Oji is by far one of the best Chinese restaurants in Vancouver.

I live near Chinatown and have gone several times to Richmond but for someone looking for quality, doesn't have a car and not looking to waste 45 minutes on a bus being coughed on -- Oji is the way to go for a meal that will be good every time.

My own gripe though is--supposedly you can get take out but when you call the number on the "take out menu"--but no one picks up. Shame, I would order out every week if I could.

Oji located next to chapters on Robson had my expectations of a decent Chinese restaurant however I was misled. I ordered the classic dishes like the shrimp dumpling, pork dumpling shrimp and pork dumplings, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, These dimsum dishes were decent in quality but were very unreasonable in price. These three dishes which one could find better in quality in. Richmond were 5 dollars each totaling 15$. I also had the spicy tofu which was $12 and just looking at the dish, it was poorly presented and one could tell it was straight from the packaged tofu and threw some sauce on and besides that I suspect it was microwaved because the outside was hot but the inside of the tofu dish was cold. One would expect this tofu dish to come with rice but it did not. You'd have to pay extra for the rice. I was very dissapointed by the lack of effort by the staff at Oji.
