Nu Greek is a quick serve spot serving Greek cuisine such as their signature chicken souvlaki. Take out is their main focus.
For the location, its hard to find a cheaper, more filling lunch. This location of Nu Greek is on Broadway, just west of Granville. For about $6, you can roll with a pita wrap with your choice of meat including chicken, lamb or beef. You can add a chickpea salad for a dollar as well, pretty good value.
Unfortunately I just don't think they taste all that great. This may be personal preference but the meat doesn't taste very good and the rest of the pita is bland. On top of that, every time I have been to Nu Greek for lunch there is only one person behind the counter so it can take a while to get your food. The service itself is fine, they are just understaffed.
Despite the very reasonable price, I probably won't return to Nu Greek.
I have been here 6 times since they opened in the Spring-4 for takeout and 2 for dine-in. I have had the vegetarian souvlaki 3 times and the lamb souvlaki 3 times. The food the first 5 times was very good, the lamb was cooked just right and the tsatziki was thick and garlicky with plenty of fresh, crisp vegetables. The vegetarian souvlaki was delicious. The last three times in the service went from friendly and prompt to slow and impersonal; the second to last visit there was one person ahead of me but no sign of a staff member for almost ten minutes, I was about to leave when she finally came out from the back. It turned out the person in front of me was dropping off a resume and she mini-interviewed him while I waited. The food was still very good though so I shrugged it off. Last week I picked up a lamb souvlaki-similar scenario-no one there when I went in for about 5 minutes and I was about to leave when she finally came out from the back, served the person in front of me. Same impersonal, let's get this over with service. When I got home and bit into the souvlaki it was terrible-the lamb was really overcooked and dried out, there was hardly any tsatziki, certainly not enough to mitigate the horribly dried out lamb. I finally pulled the meat out, added some salad dressing and ate it that way.
One of the things I liked most about Nu Greek Granville/Broadway was the really friendly, prompt service, the tasty food, the reasonable prices, the options to suit different diets. They have removed several things from the menu recently, the staff person changed from the excellent person who ran it when it first opened to someone who seems less than happy to be there (she isn't rude or disrespectful-just doesn't seem to like it much and spends too much time in the back so customers enter a staffless restaurant with no indication that anyone is available-at least get some method of customers letting you know they are there). After this last experience I am not sure if it is worth going back. Which is too bad because S. Granville really lacks decent quick serve food places. It was great while it started, now just 5 months later the early success seems to have been forgotten. It never seems crowded anymore the way it was and that last lamb souvlaki was the worst I have ever tried.
As I live only 3 blocks from Nu, I thought I would try their take out for the first time. I ordered their lamb pita, and I was expecting the lamb to be cooked to order, instead the gal just fished out some lumps of meat from one of three containers sitting on the grill, and plopped the lamb onto a pita which was not grilled to order (again, the pita was already pre-grilled and sitting somewhere warm). On top of the lamb, the gal slopped on watery greek salad, lettuce and large glop of tsasiki and rolled up the pita in foil. By the time I got home less than 10 minutes later, and opened the foil, the pita was soaked through with juices and could not be held together. The lamb was over done and stringy, the tsasiki had too much garlic, the total package was a wet gloppy tasteless disaster. This is very disappointing as I had been to the Nu Agean Cusina restaurant and Nu Food stall on Granville street downtown when it was first tried out last summer, and I had excellent meals at each location, but this Nu venture is a disaster with pre-cooked meats sitting warming on the grill for who knows how long. I will never ever go to Nu again.
