Better than expected

Decided to try this place out due to some good reviews on dinehere. I don't normally eat dinner on Commercial Dr but somehow something told me to go. I was taking a risk b/c I hate being disappointed. When we arrived, it was 6:45pm on a weekend, it was dead. The server greeted us; he was nice. We sat by the open window and it was perfect. The weather was warm and we got to see people and dogs walking by. The prices were reasonable, $12+. We ordered the spicy beef salad and something...pad-ew (#26 on the menu). When the food arrived, it looked deliciously presentable. The salad was fresh and the beef kinda tasted like beef jerky. The pad-ew noodles were tasty and the veggies were fresh. The entre could probably feed 1.5 people depending on their hunger level. Me and the guest were constantly "mmm-ing" during our meal. I must say, I was surprised. I think they beat their mainstream competitors. I always like to support the little guys.
I would definitely go again.
Recommended.

Have Had better Thai

Ordered the Sweet Basil Tofu dish and it was a bit of a disappointment due to undercooked vegetables, not enough use of Thai basil, and small portions. The tofu was a bit mangled looking also. Taste wise, it actually wasn't bad. I expected more with the $12 price range.
Service was okay in the beginning, but then became non-existent when we had to settle the bill. My dining companions seemed to like their food enough, but there is definitely better value and quality Thai restaurants out there in YVR!

Authentic Thai Food!

Bangkok Bistro has great quality Thai cuisine, as we entered the restaurant the owner/server was very warm and friendly. We ordered the chicken skewer, the chicken breast was very tender and juicy, one of the best chicken skewer I've had! For entree we had the brown curry beef, which came with jasmine rice, excellent curry! You could smell the spice and the beef melts in your mouth, loved this dish! Also loved the chicken pad thai noodle, it was flavorful and it came with a small side of salad, a nice touch to the dish! For dessert we had the deep fried banana with mango and coconute ice cream, very nicely done and I especially loved the black sesame on top! Great place, delicious food, outstanding service, Bangkok Bistro is now my new favorite Thai restaurant!

Overpriced and small portions

I thought I try out this restaurant since it had many great reviews and is under new management

When is first checked out the menu I noticed the prices were a little on the high side... $7.00 for a small Tom Yum Soup and $13.00 for Pad Thai (if you want prawns its another $2.00). I thought maybe the portion size will be make up for it, but unfortunately I was wrong.

Yes, the food is good. But there are a LOT of great Thai restaurants in the the lower mainland that serves up awesome and authentic Thai food for about 30% less than what this place is charging.

I think this place will have a hard time staying in business with those lofty prices considering that there is another Thai restaurant right across the street from them.

Great New Place!

I heard from a friend about a new Thai restaurant in the Commercial area that was supposedly really authentic. Being the curious person I am, I dropped by for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant itself was small but the owner was incredibly friendly. He helped me go through his menu and I ended up getting the brown curry chicken.

The taste was incredible as I have been to Thailand and there are very few places in Vancouver that are authentic. I was able to meet the Chef and she barely speaks english so that's why the food is so real.

I definitely will go back and recommend this place to anyone who loves Thai food!

We have never been to Yum Yai restaurant before. One day, we decided to come in for dinner. Little did we know that the restaurant had just changed ownership. The new ownership/management has done a great job with the restaurant. The atmosphere was great. It reminded me of a great small cozy restaurant I once visited in Thailand.

The manager did a great job recommending us our entrees. We had chicken cashew nuts, Panang Shrimp curry, and chicken with basil leaves. They all were spicy to our likings.

Needless to say, we will go back again. There are other things on the menu that we would like to try.

Blue Diamond on the drive

I and my girl friend have just stopped by and try Thai food on the drive, in the small cozy Thai restaurant named " Bangkok Bistro". First, I thought that this place must be the same as any Thai restaurants that I have tried before. Unfortunately, I was totally wrong, the first dish that I had was spring rolls, the fresh crispy wrap with the special dipping sauce. It was so delicious. Then followed by small lemon grass soup, the harmony of lemongrass and lemon juice were perfectly matched. I could tell that it was awesome.
As you know, all Thai restaurants have Pad Thai as a main dish. Then I tried to order Pad Thai with prawns, it was amazing as I thought, big fresh prawns and well cooked with soft noodles and tamarind sauce.
We ate all the dish with pleasure and joyful. They were so delicious.
About the service, the owner was so friendly and helpful as the other reviews confirmed.
This is the "Blue Diamond on the Drive". We will definitely come back again.

Delicious Authentic Thai Food

I've been to Thailand twice and have rarely had Thai food this good in Vancouver. The owner and staff were very attentive and recommended the Spring Rolls, which were divine and the Thom Kah lemongrass soup that was absolutely delicious without being spicy. Although I love a little spice, my inlaws don't and the chef (who is from Thailand) made the meals very tasty without being spicy. Our party also had an authentic Panang curry with big prawns, pad thai, and green curry with chicken. All were wonderful. We finished with the fried banana and ice cream which was yummy. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who love authentic thai. The food came very quickly and the value was very good for the quality of food. All in all, we were very happy and would definately recommend this place.

Loving the revamp!

We had been to the 'old' Yum Yai, and it was so-so food. However, we decided to order Thai when all other restaurants on the Drive were closed on Easter Sunday and called Yum Yai for take-out.

The 'new' Yum Yai is amazing! First of all, the owner was incredibly nice and helpful. He was very accommodating, even customizing a dish for us.

Secondly, the food was delicious! I ordered a panang curry, and the veggies were perfectly cooked, just slightly crispy. The sauce was rich and complex. We had a noodle dish, equally flavorful... It's so rare to find great Thai food, I'm glad Yum Yai has a new owner and a new chef, they are definitively doing things right!

My boyfriend and I had a craving for thai, so I looked on this site and others to try and find a place that had stellar reviews, none existed. So after driving around with out bellies rumbling we came back to commercial and decided to go to Yum Yai. Awesome choice, the spring rolls were delicous, not to greasy but crispy, the sauce was vinegary and slightly spice, it was good! We also had the thai coconut soup, yum! There is a flavour that we couldn't recognize but was alsomt addictive.

Great restaurant, and very friendly staff!

Really Excellent Thai!

I had a hankering for some Thai food and found Yum Yai on this very website! The reviews looked great so I gave them a call. The owner was super friendly and helpful over the phone - I didn't know their menu but he helped me select some of his best dishes.

The decor in the restaurant is beautiful - very elegant and warm - unlike many Thai places I have visited before. I will definitely be back to eat in the restaurant itself and enjoy the ambiance.

And the food! So good! Everything was fresh, beautifully presented (even for take-out) and delicious. The Lemongrass soup had these wonderful little mushrooms and real lemongrass. The Pad Thai, which I was reluctant to have since it can be really bad at some places, was very tasty. It was quite a bit spicier than I usually have, and my mouth was burning, but I couldn't stop eating it. The balance of flavours was perfect and the portions of chicken and tofu were generous.

This review might sound like I'm gushing a little but I'm really excited to have found a great Thai restaurant! The owner is so sweet and charming and you can tell he puts passion into his food. I hope he is successful with his new restaurant - I know I'll be back!!

We heard about this restaurant from a friend, so we went to try out -- it's a cute little cozy restaurant (bistro style) ...the owner was increditblely friendly to us :-) and we found out that they just took over the restaurant literary a week ago. The food was excellent!! I had the browne curry and it was just awesome! Overall, I would definitely go back again and again, because the price is quite reasonable relatively cheaper than other Thai restaurant (compared to the quality) -- I will definitely bring my family and friends to go try out for sure :)
