Bringing Yaletown to Kits..
By Bonka of Vancouver (464 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, October 26, 2010 - 9:31pm [Dine in]

We met up with some friends here to drink and nosh, avoiding the parking nightmare downtown.

The menu segways into using organic items and cross-ethnic flavours. We went with appetizer type fares like the fungi pizza, your typical yam fries with aioli, the leek and cream mussels frites and the house bread special with various basic spreads. Mussels were all uniform sized with a fantastic sauce while the pizza had a nice compliment of caramelized onions, feta and mushrooms, though the crust was a touch too akin to flatbread. The other dishes were merely average. Drinks unfortunately were lousy with awful mixed ratios. They have caipirinhas but you mind as well drink syrup. Their flower girl was all sparkling wine and no lychee while the pimm gin was at best passable. I'd stick to the beer.

Despite the busy evening our server was fairly on top of things and checked up on us several times.

They are a smaller space so other pattrons tend to co-exist around your table area depending on where you sit. Music is loud and really drowns out normal conversation.

The New Bohemian very much parallels a chain type operation but is just quirky enough to fit into the area. It's one place to be seen.

Nice Sunday night

On Sundays they have 50% all appies (except fish tacos and nachos) -- so DH and I decided to give this place another shot. We are glad we did, although the food wasn't all that great, it was OK, the standouts we ordered were the heart of palm salad and the french fries, and at 50% off we ate everythign we wanted, each had a drink, and the total came to $33.00 minus tax and tip! We will be back (on Sunday nights).

Great food, weak service
By melly of Kitsilano (25 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, October 21, 2010 - 7:55pm [Dine in]

I went here for a staff social tonight and while the food was great, the service was lacking. We were a party of 10, and when we got there, the restaurant was empty except for another table. While our waiter seemed really good in the beginning (taking our drink orders, etc.), it seemed like he went downhill fast. It took 40 minutes to get our food. I followed up with him and his excuse was that since we are a party of 10, it takes a little longer because they wait until all the food is ready before they bring it out (remember, the restaurant was empty except for a couple of people). That was a sad excuse because if that were true, then it would take hours to get your food if the restaurant was full. We finally got our food. As I mentioned, the food was great. I had mussels and fries which I thought was excellent. No complaints from the others about their food, so I'm assuming everyone was satisfied. Unfortunately, I had a late lunch and I could not finish all my food. I asked the waiter to pack it up, and boy, was that a mistake. Remember, the mussels come with broth. He put the mussels, broth, and fries all in the same container. Now I fries swimming in my mussels and broth. How dumb is that????? Not sure if I'll be back. It was a very disappointing ending to the evening.

The food was very good with a good selection of vegetarian food. There is also a good selection of food for those not fond of veggies. I had the warm chickpea salad which was fantastic. It's really big and is more of a meal than the starter it's listed as. The pricing was a bit confusing. Some stuff was over priced, others under priced. Overall it was a nice place to eat

It's been a while since we''ve encountered such remarkable mediocrity. From the growlie faced server, who approached us at tortoise like speed with a look on his face like we all had 3 heads, to the totally forgettable food. The yam fries were flacid, the fish tacos were moldy, and the pizza was tasteless. The atmosphere could use some toning down, as in way too loud frantic, which only made us eat faster and faster, despite the lousy food. Go spend your hard earned $$ somewhere else. Please. Let's not support these guys.

theres lots of competition out there with lounges so these places really need to stand out and do something to draw customers on a consistent basis. i would say that the new bohemian falls in the middle and just met my expectations in terms of an average dining experience.
i was not pleased with the food. my apricot glazed salmon tasted mediocre at best along with everything else that came with it. the taste was just bland in nature and i felt the food was cooked in a hurry. my gfs beef tortellini was too salty, the chefs must have doubled the sodium content because i have never tasted pasta like that before.
our waitress was friendly and helpful when it came to ordering our dishes. however, she wasnt on top of things and didnt come around to see if we wanted another round of drinks until we pointed it out to her nor did she refill our glasses of water more than once. not a huge issue but it still came to my attention.
prices here are fair. i do not recall anything on the menu being more than $30 (but i could be wrong) however the trade off is sub-par tasting food which is not something i am willing to take.
i love the ambiance in this place. dimly lit, attractive bar appearance and a spacious dining area along with a casual atmosphere. i could see how this place would be great to go to after dinner to drink and relax with friends.
overall, i cant say anything more about this place. i would return if i was in the area for drinks but if i was hungry, i wouldnt come here because the variety and selection of restaurants in this area is enormous. with that being said, its hard to overlook the poor food quality here when theres potentially something much better "next door".

New Hot Spot!

I had dinner here with the girls and took advantage of their DOV menu for only $28 (4 courses). It really was a good menu, especially for the amount of food you get.
For the 2 starters, I had the split pea soup and the bacon wrapped scallops. Both fantastic. My main was the organic pork chop which was also really good. But the most excellent part of dinner was the strawberry napoleon for dessert - I could have easily enjoyed that for all 4 courses and be happy!

The service was good - they weren't pushy in terms of trying to push alcohol sales or trying to rush your meal to turn tables faster. The ambiance was hip and cool. Unfortunate for us, the DJ was setting up just as we were finishing up.
Warning, if you're looking for a quiet date place, this is not so suitable. It's great for a night out with a loud crowd.

Hopefully, they will return for next year's DOV. If they do, I will definitely be back, if not before which is very likely!

Great feel to the place, clearly a lot of thought has gone into the ambiance and what it should stand for. Local chic, extremely warm, with a cool vibe. Was surprised by the sophistication of the food. Presentation was stunning. Tried a couple of super cocktails. 10 out of 10. Will be coming back soon.

I went here with some friends at around 9pm for a 'quick dinner.' The restaurant interior was rather nice, music could be a little loud but the service was nice enough. I ordered some kind of a summer salad with blueberries and goat cheese, which came with plentiful portions and tasted pretty good, although it did have a slightly strange undertone to it. All around, a pretty nice place; I would totally go there again.

I haven't eaten here that many times, but from my experience the food has been fine. Not amazing, but of better quality than the numerous bars around the area. It certainly surpasses food at Gargoyles, the Shack, Elwoods, etc. However, the New Bohemian should have better food than these places, as it charges higher prices and seems to want to cater to a different clientele (i.e. lounge not bar). So basically, the food is good and fair value for what you pay but it is not the best thing about the Bohemian. You won't be disappointed, but you're probably better off going for late night cocktails and a snack rather than dinner.

There is, however, one exception to this. The mussels and yam fries combo. It's available on either Tuesday or Wednesday night (I don't remember which), and serve up a 1/2 lb of yam fries (better than the average) and a 1/2 lb of mussels. I would advise the coconut curry mussels which are absolutely delicious. I drank up all the broth at the end because they were so good. And the best part is - the combo is only $7! That to me is a very good price for what you get.

The ambiance is fantastic, it's a beautiful space. The patio outside is lovely, and was my choice during my summer when I was there with just one or two friends. With a bigger group (or, you know, in the winter), grab their comfy leather sofas inside and post up for a fun night. The movie screens are really cool; overall, a feast for the eyes.

The drinks are well the Bohemian really shines. Yes, some of them cost more than your average Broadway street pint/cocktail. Their beer selection is unparalleled in the area and their cocktails, well, can only be described as exceptional. Try the champagne cocktails - so good! Word of warning - they get quite a bit of alcohol into deceptively tasty cocktails. If you are there at 1:30am, and can no longer taste the bourbon in your lemonade... well, maybe that's just me.

As a restaurant, I give this place 3/5.
As a bar/lounge, I give this place 5/5.

I've been there quite a few time over the last year and have no complaints. It's a good place to bring a date or have a gathering. I've only ever eaten their pizza and appies. Prices are fair, quality is above average, service is good in my books. If you're looking for fine dining then this isn't the place, if you're looking to have good time with good eats in a relaxed atmosphere I would recommend this place. My gf LOVES the martini's they have there.

It's ok but there's a lot better places to eat in vancouver. Arrived for dinner around 7 and there were 3 other tables in the place. Room is nice, I thought it cute that they recycled the old fiction sign for the interior. It got a lot busier towards the end of our meal. Service was acceptable, server kind of knew her stuff which was nice. Although when it started to get busy it took a long time to pay her. I had the lamb ragout which was alright though i found myself searching for the lamb among garlic chunks. The menu was a bit misleading as I expected vegetables as well as quinoa but the vegetables were IN the quinoa. Creme brule was good, smooth, but why offer it if you're not going to do it right (I mean torch it to order, this is my big gripe with a lot of vancouver restaurants). Prices are reasonable for what you get. The spicy prawn and crab dip is very good.

I find myself confused as it's a lounge-type setting that offers burgers and sandwiches. If I were them I'd get rid of those and just offer more appies on the menu instead. It seems the way their customers are taking them anyway as they don't seem to be getting a big dinner crowd.

This restaurant has great ambience and friendly servers. The food is adequate, but it didn't wow me. I had the risotto, which was full of flavour, but the rice was way too hard. My bf had the burger and the beef tasted very fresh. Yam fries were good, but the ones at the bottom of the bowl got kind of soggy. My server was very friendly, and made a delicious fruit punch for me out of white grape juice, cranberry juice, orange juice, and 7.

For the price, I think I could get better tasting food elsewhere. I might drop by again for some yam fries and drinks.

I knew nothing about this place prior to booking a reservation with opentable; I hardly ever get out to Kits, and dinehere won't bring up reviews if you search on "the new bohemian" so we went based on the menu (and drinks list) alone.

First the bad - it was a touch loud, so if you're going to go for dinner expect to have to lean forward and talk loudly. Or enjoy the conversations at the tables next to you (it's cozy). Also our table was wobbly.

Everything else was fantastic - service was great, the food came out promptly and was well executed, and the room had a great energy. And everything was a solid value. I will 100% be back... can't wait.

Four of us went for a girls night out here one Friday night and we all agreed the place was pretentious and over priced. We walked in around 7 and the place was 3/4 empty and we were told there was no room for us so we'd have to sit at the bar. This was fine as one of our friends hadn't arrived yet, so we grabbed a cocktail and waited it out. A half hour later the hostess told us we could sit on their patio, so we picked up our drinks and we're crammed into a tiny table that barley fit two. We then had to move again inside to a real table this time, where our server was great until we asked for the bill. She put all of us on the same bill which was fine until I asked her if she could split it as we were all paying separate and different ways. I waited for about 10 minutes by the debit machine.... again fine as it was now busy, however when I asked her about dividing up the bill she told me to add it up myself and she was to busy to do it. She followed it up with " I'm sorry if that sounded bitchy. I'm just really busy."
I understand if a server is busy, just be polite about it.
Due to that and the overpriced bland and small portions of food, not to mention the worst cheese plate ever, I won't be going back.

I came here after school last week and was impressed.
I think the room is gorgeous. I am from Montreal and even there this would be one of the nicest rooms in the city.
I was tired and not all that hungry so I had a quick beer and the Walnut Goats cheese to start. My server was very friendly ( great smile ) and both food and drink arrived surprisingly quick for a busy room.
Loved the Cheese and followed it with the Steak Tacos. I've never tried tacos before so I'm not sure if all tacos are like this..but I loved them.
Loved the lighting and the projector playing black and white movies.
I want to come back for a full blown dinner experience.

I had heard great things from friends who had been to the New Bohemian, so I tried it out last week.

Service was really friendly and fun, with a great casual edge.

Everyone at the table loved their meals - we had a couple of dishes of mussels to start, as well as the heart of palm salad, and then had the lamb, stuffed chicken, curry bowl and rigatoni with some of the tastiest bolognaise sauce I have ever had!!

Had a blast -- good food and a very appealing and inviting atmosphere. Will be back soon for sure!

Went to the New Bohemian last weekend for dinner with 5 friends and ended up staying all night! The music was great and it was packed so it saved us heading downtown.

The heart of palm salad is a must have, and from what I heard from the others at the table the stuffed chicken and mussels were fantastic as well.

The lighting is great, and the decor is really stylish, without making you feel like you are in a pretentious place.

Service was amazingly friendly and personable. We all agreed that we would be back soon!

I went with a girlfriend on a Thurs night, sat at the bar comfortably on high backed chairs. The cocktail list is excellent and we chose a couple of interesting cocktails -- outstanding! We each had a meat entre, and while my friend's was stone cold, mine was only "good" not great. But, the great bartender had my friend's dinner heated up right away and then bought us a dessert -- and although one dessert was all we could conceive of trying after a satisfying dinner, I'm sure if we had both ordered a dessert, he would have promo'd both without blinking. To summarize, food pretty good, cocktails excellent, service -- excellent.

Went to the New Bohemian with a group of about 15 friends. While we were impressed with the appetizers, the mains and the room in general, our rude dismissive waitress ruined the whole evening for us.

In addition to being inattentive and rude to members of our party, she advised us that we would have leave at 9:30 because there was another booking. She then advised that we would be able to sit at another table if there was one available, otherwise we need to "make other arrangements".

I won't even get into her reaction to one member of our group with dietary concerns.

When we approached the manager about his wait staff, his first reaction was to dismiss our concerns out of hand. It is only when he was pressed that he apologized for her behaviour.

Save your time and your energy and find somewhere else to spend your money.
