Two years or so ago I took a friend for dinner here to thank him for helping me move. The food and service was very good. It was a bit pricier than some of the other sushi joints in the area but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. He really enjoyed the sashimi and the tempura and rolls were delish. Another friend and I went to yoga yesterday and we were wanting a relatively healthy dinner afterwards so I suggested Asahi. We were seated quickly and the staff was pleasant. He ordered a pineapple juice and shochu and was told they didn't have it, they only had lemon & shochu so he ordered that instead. For dinner we each had a roll combo, I had gomae he ordered the grilled shitake skewers and we each asked for miso soup. The gomae came first, followed quickly by the mushrooms, which weren't quite what he was expecting, no sauce or glaze to them. We were almost done our sushi plates and had to ask the waitress if our miso soup and his drink were coming. The miso soup might as well have been brown water, no miso flavour at all. I had the vegetarian combo with avocado, yam and kappa rolls, they were okay, not horrible but certainly not outstanding. He had the number 1 roll combo with tuna, salmon and California rolls, the tuna and salmon looked good but the Cali roll didn't look that great to me. The bill came to just under $40, which we could have gotten a TON of sushi at some of the other, better, sushi joins in the west end. Sorry Asahi but you're a bit disappointing these days.
