decent cafe

Mrs. C and I met some friends for an afternoon snack at this place and we had an okay experience. The restaurant was reasonably clean, including the tiny w/c. Service was a little bit slow which was a bit of a letdown. The food was good though, and the prices were decent. We had fish congee with Chinese doughnut, potstickers, chow mein noodles, and fried rice noodles with soy sauce. We also had some decent dong cafe (iced coffee).

All in all it was decent snackage, but they need to improve the service.

Great late night meal...

I went here with some friends. It was 11:30pm on a Saturaday night. We were quite hungry and looking for a place open late. We found it!

Food: Good and yummy. I had the black pepper on beef with fried noodles. I was one of my favorite and a very classic dish. They can't screw this up and they didn't.

Service: It was quite fast even tho there was one chef visible in the kitchen. The refill on the tea was quite slow tho. I can't complain when there was quite a lot of people there. That night they had three waitress working.

Ambiance: Loud and busy. It felt funny sitting in the middle of the restaurant. We sat at the biggest table there.

I wouldn't mind return for another late meal another day.

Nancy needs to spend more time in the restaurant

getting the food/ambiance/service up to better levels; although given the amount of people eating here I'm sure she (he?) is happy enough collecting the money from all those customers.

What's the reason for all the customers? The food is okay, not good not great, just okay. You can find the same quality in many of the other Chinese places which dot Victoria Drive.

Onto the service, the waitress asked "how many?" when we walked in "ready to order?" and "plate or bowl?" those were the only words spoken to us. Actually we got what we needed, and the food came out fast and hot. Just no friendly banter.

The interior looks like Chinese Auntie Nancy has not updated the place since 1977. Booth seating by the window, well used wooden chairs & tables, larger round tables, glass window ( you can see the guys cooking in the back -no one wears proper cooks' clothing or hair nets/hats everyone is in streetwear- ) separating the kitchen from the dining room.

You could eat in a lot of other places which are worse ( and better for that matter ), this restaurant is good for what it is.I can't recommend eating here, nor can I discourage you not to.

Great squid

Four of us ate here on Sat. afternoon. The place was quite full. We ordered wonton soup (the wontons were all shrimp...very nice). Broth was okay. We also had an order or gai lan in oyster sauce. It was okay but could have been cut up a bit...hard to eat with chopsticks. We also had chow mein with brisket. The noodles are crispy variety...quite tasty. My favorite dish was the squid deep fried with pepper. Yummy.

The best Wonton Soup I have found in the city. Just for this fact alone, I give Nancy 4 Stars!

I have no complaints about the other dishes, but the real bread and butter of Nancy is the Wonton Soup!

Service was always okay, atmosphere is okay. Just looks like another typical neighborhood restaurant.

Very good Cantonese food

This place is just around the block for me, and it's a real gem, because it's affordable, and the food is always good. The Shui Kau dumplings and regular Won Tons are great, with lots of filling. Other great dishes are the Chow Mein, sweet and sour pork or chicken, fried rice, and fish congees.

The waitresses are sometimes a bit curt but polite, and will warm up if you talk to them.

The place is clean, and there's no indication that they use too much MSG, and it's open till 1am, and usually frequented by families.

Overall a great place to stop for Cantonese food.

Good food, not the nicest place

Nancy's Chinese dishes are definitely tasty - my favourite is their Satay Beef with either rice noodles or egg noodles. Congee is quite good as well - good congee base. Not the nicest looking restaurant, although their dishes are usually quite clean.

Great place for an inexpensive lunch

My 2nd time at this place. The first time I met a friend for lunch. I had the Wonton with noodles.
Good meal and price was right. Can't go wrong with this order. Service is typical of a mom/pop operation
so no complaints here. If you're expecting more like some of the reviewer's are, then don't waste your
time.
The 2nd time here, I took my wife for a quick lunch - under $15. Her first time~ she enjoyed it.
Meal was good, hot and service was fine.
It wasn't busy - that's the way we like it.
I can recommend this place for lunch. Maybe dinner one day soon. :)

Good food but...
By daveo of vancouver (10 Reviews)

the portions are way to small! i've been to many chinese restaurants and this takes the cake with small portions. I had to try their wonton soup-because it's in the title. Well the wontons were quite good and the noodles were not all bunched up, which is great. i also ordered century old egg congee, also good, but i only got 3 1/2 rice bowls out of it. Overall, this place has good food, but the portions are definately lacking.

The place looks new and apparently-from a friend-a lot cleaner from what it previously was. Service was alright.

Probably won't come back here again because of the serving size and it causing me to feel ripped off.

Cheap eat but poor service

We went there for lunch several times and once for dinner. Lunch is cheap and is a good deal. But the service needs much improvement. A few times we had to wait for a long time before someone came and took our order. I think they are purely understaffed. Last Sunday when we went for lunch, we almost have to help ourselves to get what we need, since no one is paying attention to us. We order 7 dishes and after almost half an hour, the waitress asked if all the dishes have arrived. We told them we're still missing a congee and a rice. She told us we didn't order rice. We had to go thro' the order one by one with her to figure things out. I wouldn't go back again if I have a choice.

must try the deep-fried pork chop with salad dressing
By ms-sunshine of Vancouver (9 Reviews)
Submitted Wednesday, March 7, 2007 - 1:51am [Dine in]

i have had their late-nite food 4 times now and it's been fairly good everytime. we've tried clams, gai lan, fried intestines, deep-fried tofu, and etc... all good. but, my fav. dish has got to be that deep-fried pork chop with salad dressing. hence the rating of "outstanding". during the morning, i've tried their shui-kow noodle with soup (come with 4 fair sized shui-kow) and minced beef congee (average). everything is very reasonably priced. service is alright, nothing special. ambiance is not impressive. but good food. lots of parking. opens til 2am.
ps. pls. do submit review if any of you have had better pork with salad dressing anywhere else.

This is one of my favorite chinese cafe type restaurants. The place is kind of shabby but don't be fooled by the looks. I come here very often for their CURRY noodles. They have the best yellow curry in Vancouver! I'm very picky with my curry, they have to be the right amount of spicyness and curry taste and so far I haven't found a better place to have curry than Nancy's. Their other dishes, wonton soup, beef brisket soup are all very good.

The only complain I have for Nancy's is the service, I've been going to this place for a few years now and their service has improved, but nothing to praise about.

good deals but might need better quality control
By foodie57 of Vancouver (21 Reviews)

I liked Nancy’s as a late night snack for awhile, decent portions at a good price, but I noticed this kind of chemical-ammonia smell coming from their noodles or broth all the time. I usually get the wonton noodles in soup, and it was happening regularly, so I ended up trying the same dish at a more expensive place…wow, what a difference. Now I just pay the extra dollar or two for the more expensive place. I feel bad saying this stuff about them, because they have a nice staff and I think they have great deals, but honestly, I don’t know about their quality control. I’ve also had the congee and never noticed anything, but one dish can ruin everything else.

This is becoming one of the staples of restaurants for our family. The food is quite good, especially the Singapore vermicille. From wonton noodle soup to a 10 course meal, all are well prepared and very taste.

We have been there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We never had a bad experience.

Good food, good people.
