Cheap Buffet

I came here a few times to pick up some samosas on the way home - delicious little things, especially with the chutney. Great cheap snacks.
I always want to try their buffet, but never have the proper time to sit down for a meal. Lucky me came an opportunity to, and I ate here with 2 others.

It's not the best (as they somewhat proclaim), but it's decent. There aren't many choices out there for a full dinner under $10 anymore.

The best things about our dinner here were the paneer curry (just delicious!) , the made to order naan, riata, rice pudding, and the chicken and egg curry. Without these items, I would have felt cheated of my $10. Why?
The salad bar was fine, but the lettuce was browned, and some of the veggies were visually unappealing, like they've been sitting out too long and the edges had begun to shrivel. The two rices offered were barely warm as were the curries. Don't expect a hot meal off the buffet offerings.

Everyone knows that in Vancouver a true testament of a good Indian restaurant, is a worthy butter chicken. Although the butter chicken sauce was good, the actual chicken meat tasted old and slightly off. It was the first time I ever went up for butter chicken sans the chicken.

Overall, I think it was a good deal. I will probably return just for more paneer curry.
P.S. the utensils are copper - kinda a turn off while eating, but expect your hands to smell like copper.

- Hands smell of copper

Cheap ... and bad

I don't know why it bothers advertising Indian, Western & Chinese. It's really just some AYCE Indian place.
It was kind of clean and they quickly serviced us, no complaints there. Yes, the naan came out quickly and tasty relatively okay (though it is far from the best in town).

The rest of the food? Blech! I was surprised none of us got sick afterwards. Both the rice tasted slightly "off". The okra dish was far from fresh. That's saying a lot given how much spice goes into these things and covers stuff up. The paneer was barely passable and if there was aloo gobi, I sure didn't recognize it. The meat dishes were marginally better, though the lamb was, ick, lukewarm so that the fatty bits were still semi-solid. And no, that is not the best butter chicken in town. Yes, they do have pakora, but this isn't the only place I've seen it at. Strangely, no raita!

For only $9.95, it _still_ wasn't worth it! The $9.95 lunch buffet at Saravanaa Bhavan is WAAAY better. Not sure if it's the best on Main, but I sure hope not. Either way we won't be headed back. There's plenty to choose from that are much better. It's been a while since I've felt like this, but I wouldn't eat this stuff even for free...

Worst Buffet Experience. Ever.
By Eliot1 of Vancouver (east) (3 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, January 21, 2011 - 8:21pm [Dine in]

My partner and I recently dined in at Nakodhar and had the buffet. I had stopped by for the cheap samosas before, and they're decent enough for the low price, so we thought we'd give the buffet a try. Very bad idea, as it turned out.

The place is pretty divey, but this wasn't a huge concern since I already knew it wasn't fine dining. Sometimes the food can far supercede ambiance, but not in this case. The salad bar should have tipped me off in regards to what was to come: old, mushy tomatoes, dry cucumbers, browned lettuce and bottles of kraft dressing. It looked like it had been out there all day!

The curries were all mislabeled; extra fun for a vegetarian! I tentatively chose a few items, including mattar paneer, palak paneer, mixed vegetables, and a kidney bean and lentil curry. I love samosas and aloo tikki so I grabbed a few of those too. Seated at the table, I opened my samosa and it immediately seemed off. There was some white goo inside, and upon smelling it my gut instinct told me not to eat it. I have no idea how long they'd been out there, but it definitely seemed like a health hazard. The owner noticed I was unimpressed, and hurried to get me a fresh one, which I did appreciate.

Next up, the aloo tikki: these tasted as though they'd been fried in rancid oil. I absolutely love Indian food, and have yet to come across aloo tikki that I found inedible, but this was it. I took one bite and couldn't bear to finish it. Next up was a hair in my oil drenched vegetable curry. Along with the stale pappadums, dried out kidney bean and lentil curry (daal with kidney beans maybe?) and tasteless, if not entirely inedible other dishes, my partner and I decided we'd had enough.

Even at $10 a person, the value was nil since the food was so awful. After we left, we both felt cheated of our money. Indeed, I can think of countless places to eat for $10 or less that have fresh, delicious food! Saravanaa Bhavan, I am thinking of you! Oh I do regret having strayed....

I can only give the service one star as well; although the owner had seemed attentive about my dismay with the samosa, I don't see how he could possibly allow the rest of the food to be served in his restaurant! Make no mistake, this is no hidden gem, or a dive with awesome food. It is flat out the worst Indian food I've ever had!

My favourite butter chicken in the city (including Surrey!)

We remember the couple that own this place from when they owned an indian buffet in Surrey - they sold it, took a year off, and opened Nakhodar. He does all his own cooking (which is why it's so consistently good) and she runs the till - they're a very sweet couple.

Amazing butter chicken - the best I've had in Vancouver, and I've had it at a lot of places. They bring fresh naan right to your table after you sit down, and it's to die for. Their aloo gobi is quite good, and they've even got pakoras on the buffet (not something I've seen anywhere else).

Ever since this place opened up we haven't been back to All India, and it's our first choice whenever we get a curry craving. Love it!

Good Indian Food & Excellent Value

Nakodhar offers anexcellent value all day buffet with a wide assortment of meat and vegetarian dishes, as well as desserts, salad items, and canned and fresh fruits. In addition, naans are freshly prepared and brought to your table.

We have eaten there several times and also introduced friends to it. The service is always warm and friendly and we are surprised that the restaurant is not packed. Yet, on chatting with several customers, we have found them, like us, to be repeat customers. Some confess that they are afraid to broadcast news of this find for fear that it will become too popular.

The ingredients in the dishes varies and each time we visit we have delighted to notice the different tastes produced by the variation in spices and other ingredients.

The owner does the cooking while his wife attends to the customers and together they provide a combination that ishard to beat.

I was born and raised in India and my partner and I have been described as excellent cooks so I know how Indian food should taste.
May I suggest you visit Nakodhar Sweets and Restaurant which is located on east side of Main, between 49th & 50th. You cannot miss it as it is in the middle of the block.

Decent food but not over 45 items
By luminaire of Vancouver (9 Reviews)

A better estimate would be around 9 main dishes (butter chicken, lamb curry, aloo gobi, tandoori chicken, some sort of paneer, keema mattar, a mixed vegetable dish, spiced rice, and plain basmati), 5-6 salads and appetizers (aloo jeera, pakoras, dal, caesar salad, garden salad), chow mein, 2-3 desserts (gulab jamun, jalebi, fruit salad), 4-5 sauces or condiments, and of course the staple of all buffets....jello.

The lamb curry was thin and the lamb was mostly bone with a bit of meat attached. The butter chicken was all thigh meat (and pretty good) although it takes a while to find any amidst the sea of sauce. Some pieces of the tandoori were undercooked and the pakoras were very dry. The other items were decent overall but I did pass on the salads and condiments.

The buffet is $10 but it doesn't cover their sweets section other than the desserts I mentioned. The restaurant itself is small but neatly kept and comfortable. I managed to eat more than my money's worth (which is the usual) without feeling sick (which I wish was the usual) so Nakodhar gets an above average rating in my book.

Better than the rest on Main Street

Nakodhar is the latest AYCE in thePunjabi market. The rice dish was very good as was the gulab jamuns but there was no tandoori dishes. The restaurant is not as busy as it opened recently. It advertises as having Chinese and western dishes but it is only a smattering. Better to go all Indian. There is one puzzling thing. The dessert dishes, and there were four, are spread over the buffet table. The custard sauce and ras gula was in the salad section while the gulab jamun was with the Chinese section. The uninitiated could easily mix the dessert with the main meal. Otherwise, I would rate it better than Himalya and All-India.

Friendly owners and hopefully there can make a go of it as several restaurants has closed on that location.

Cheap, yummy buffet

Best buffet in Punjabi Markey (Little India) on Main Street. Small place, with great owners, and the food is good - home style. Would recommend over Himalya and All India Sweets - don't be put off by the empty dining room, it just opened.
