Small Japanese restaurant that specializes in take out. There is a small seating area for those who want to dine in. Assorted dishes are served and if you're ever in doubt of what you want, just take a look at the various polaroids of the food that is made into a border on the walls to give you an idea. Pictures include descriptions and prices.
Food: i had the small beef sukiyaki $3.50 (which came w/ miso soup) and california roll $2.95. for those prices i was satisfied! they've got lots of little donburi and sushi combos.
Service: they mostly do take out but u can sit and eat if there's rm available in their limited seating area. u basically order at the front counter, sit down, and they bring the food to you. the tea is self serve and altho they dont ask you to put ur dishes away most ppl do...
Ambiance: dont expect much. it's small and can get hot in there. there's polaroids of all the dishes and special menu items posted on the walls. u eat, then get out!
Overall: great place to eat for quick and cheap jap food on robson. also, if you work reg on robson this is a nice alternative to McD's, breadgarden, steamrollers, or starbucks.
Food: It's nice that you can choose the size or the rice bowls but I found that since I got the small, I received considerably less chicken than a regular that my sis ordered. Teriyaki chicken was ok but it really bothered me to have so much fat and fatty skin attached. Bowl came with lots of sauce which I enjoyed. Miso soup tasted off... very different from all other miso soups I've ever had. They serve oolong tea instead of the japanese green tea which I found kind of odd but didn't mind. Spicy tuna rolls needed the tuna to be spicier as the rolls were borderline bland. Very affordable as my meal $9 with a pop. All rolls were considerably cheap for an establishment on Robson.
Service: Non-existent. It's the type of serve yourself place - order at the cashier, seat yourself, grab your own drink kind of place which is alright considering the lower prices they you pay. Employees were very nice though. I dunno if it was standard practice at this place or not but I found it odd to be having to clean up after yourself... I don't mind but I could see why it would irk others, even if the food is cheap.
Ambiance: Very small and only good for those who want a quick bite to eat. Great take-out menu.
Overall: Will return if I ever need a quick and cheap bite to eat while over-spending at the other places on Robson.
Despite their limited selection, their food is not bad. The service is a bit slow when they have more people because they only have about 2 to 3 staff. The Kimchi Pork Donburi is GREAT and their chicken teriyaki is good as well. Sushi is mediocre.
In regards to a post below - most sushi express places make sushi from a machine.
Sushi made with a MACHINE! Sheets of rice rolled out from a machine explains why the sushi here is very affordable. Instead of making sushi by hand, the sushi "chef" adds nori and ingredients onto the sheet of machine-pressed rice which is then rolled up with a push of a handle! The texture of the rice feels much thicker and denser then traditional sushi after this technological intervention. if you don't mind the sushi looking a bit squared intead of rounded and hunger is taking over so you're not being picky, this is a good place for filling up your tummy with solid food, just don't expect gourmet food here.
