Mui Ngo Gai offers many of your favourites such as Pho, rice and noodle dishes; also many special dishes from the north, central and south Vietnam. Casual family friendly spot that will become your favourite place for Vietnamese food. Great service, great food, leaner meat and a fresh taste await you at Mui Ngo Gai.
I'm not sure what's up with the two reviewers below, but with all due respect after reading them, you'd think this place is a fine dining establishment...
This place is a Pho house! There is absolutely nothing special about this place. It's what you'd expect from a typical pho house - ie: no need to go out of your way just to try this place if there's a pho restaurant in your neighborhood.
Food and service wise, it's consistent with the typical pho house in Vancouver. I didn't get the TLC, mom n pop's service that the previous two reviewers claim they received, but no worries, it's not expected at these places. I found the serving sizes to be very small tho, which is why I gave a 1 star for value. The large pho noodle I ordered is an easy medium at most establishments, while the ribs on rice dish my friend ordered came with the least amount of rice I've ever seen come with that specific dish... the rice basically looked like garnish when it was beside the ribs...
Nothing more you basically need to know that that I guess..
We had previously eaten at Mui Ngo Gai several times and liked this restaurant, but hadn't been here for a while so decided to try it again last weekend - very disappointing! What has happened to the food and service? A wet night in Vancouver and the restaurant was very cold and only a couple of tables were occupied. We ordered dishes we'd enjoyed here on our previous visits but were very disappointed to find the standard of food did not measure up to our previous experiences here. The Bánh Xèo was basically pancake and soggy bean shoots - after a search, we managed to find a tiny trace of meat and 3 small shrimp - hardly the feast that this dish can be in restaurants like Thai Son! Gà xào xả ớt (Lemongrass chicken with chili) was burnt and otherwise tasteless. 3 different pho dishes were unremarkable. I noticed a sign saying they'd opened another branch of this restaurant on Kingsway and wondered if they had taken the previous cook and staff there as service was very slow and indifferent and the owner walked though the restaurant a couple of times without speaking to anyone and seemed too busy with whatever he was doing in the back room to bother with his customers. $130 for six of us seemed high in view of the poor food and service - 9 of us ate royally at Dynasty today for $135 and there was no comparison between Mui Ngo Gai and the vastly superior food, standard of decor and service there. This place has definitely gone way downhill since the last time we were here and, with so many other good restaurants in Vancouver these days, I doubt we'll go back again.
I've been to quite a few vietnamese restaurants all over North America so when I say you can skip this one, you can either trust me or go try it for yourself and learn the hard way. The rice dish that I ordered here tasted like it's been here for the past few days. The meat was literally hard and you know when something's been sitting here for a while. The rice was mushy and the veggies had a lot of brown spots on it. As for the all important fish sauce? I don't know how to describe it but it just doesn't taste like fish sauce. In anycase, go try it for yourself if you don't believe me and you'll see what I mean.
I live extremely close to this place, about 5-minutes walk or so; so I have eaten here for 7 or 8 times. They do have a pretty extensive menu but I usually eat alone so I have not tried most of them. The decor is rather tacky but there's a TV here so it was awesome during the Olympics.
I usually order the barbecued chicken or pork on rice with eggs. Those are pretty good, the meat succulent and very flavourful. Portion-wise it is average I guess. The spring rolls and salad rolls are decent, but nothing that blows me out of the water. The pho was alright I guess, again nothing too outstanding here.
In short, a decent place to eat if you are around the area.
I've been to this restaraunt about a dozen times, and every time i've satisfied. Being the total 'foodies' that my wife and I are, we like to give props to the family owned and run establishments in our area. This place uses fresh ingredients, and always give plenty of what you ask for. Now we haven't ordered anything but Pho from this place, so we can't give much opinion on anything but ..but we can tell you: They are fast, reasonable priced, fresh and tastey. We plan to be loyal customers :)
This little gem of a restaurant hasn't been around for too long (says my Vietnamese friend), but it looks like it's quickly getting more popular as it's more and more busy everytime I go.
Went there today and ordered a #62 chicken with spring rolls on vermicelli for myself, and a #23 rare beef with brisket and tripe pho for m'ladyfriend.
The food is always excellent, the prices are on-par to perhaps a little bit pricey compared to other places, and the service is fantastic. I'm always greeted with a smile, and the food comes out pretty quickly. The take-out experience is solid too, as the wait isn't too long.
The vibe I get from this place when I do eat-in is comfy. I love the decorations, and the patrons there are usually friendly and family-oriented unlike other more "intimidating" Vietnamese places.
