Impeccable service; solid steakhouse

I haven't written any reviews on here so I'd figure it's about time I started submitting them.

I brought my girlfriend here for our 1st anniversary back in mid June. When calling in to make reservations the hostess asked what occasion this was - I imagine depending on the event they would have different menus with a nice congratulatory message at the top. A nice touch.

We were pleasantly greeted upon arrival and had our jackets hung. Our table wasn't quite ready yet so we had the option to mingle in the lounge/drink area. Just as we sat down our table was ready.

The hostess introduced us to our servers for the evening. They were very polite and shuttled us to our table. Just as we arrived our server pulled out the table and seated us before bringing the table back in. I have never seen this before and definitely set the tone for the evening.

The ambience is unique; no windows, dark woods and very busy with a mix of every type of diner. Lots of servers were around hustling back and forth from kitchen to table.

We started off with a couple of Martini's. What we got escapes me but the price didn't. Almost $20 per. Pricey but nicely balanced. We started off with a couple of appetizers: the Shrimp Alexander and Jumbo Lump Crabmeat Cocktail. The shrimps were cooked perfectly and the white wine butter sauce complementing it was delicious. It was certainly one of the best appetizers I've had. The crabmeat came in large chunks but was otherwise standard fare.

My girlfriend decided on the Porterhouse while I got the Bone-in Ribeye after one of the servers came by to take our order and introduced us to the different cuts/entree selections. He had a serving platter with the different cuts to show. We accompanied our red meat with the Sauteed Mushrooms, Lyonnaise Potatoes and the Australian Jumbo Lobster Tail. Our steaks were thick, nicely grilled and seasoned perfectly. Unfortunately we had wished we had gotten it grilled medium or medium well for best flavour (as oppposed to rare/medium rare). I enjoyed the lyonnaise potatoes but it was heavily salted and they put in the onions in too early so we were left with a lot of charred slices. The mushrooms too were heavily seasoned. The lobster tail was enormous however I could definitely tell it was of frozen variety. A little disheartening considering it was over $60 for it.

We closed off the evening with chocolate souffle. I was expecting individually sized servings but it came out in a large ramekin and halved served with fresh whipped cream. We were already stuffed by now but found a way to finish it. It had the right amount of sweet-bitterness to it and worth a try.

All in all it was an excellent evening. The service was the first rate; perhaps a little too good. I will give this place a future visit based on the service alone although I'd like to know if the over seasoned side dishes were just an abberation. Some might stray away because of the prices at steakhouses but considering the size of their cuts one can share their steak with another and you can have a great experience. Recommended!

Something to look out for

I too, took advantage of their online coupon special last month. It was a great opportunity to sample one of Vancouver's best steak houses. Thank god for the coupon ($119, dinner for two) - it's definitely something to look out for in the future, I hear they have it once a year?

2 of our party of 4 ordered the dinner for 2 special and the other 2 basically ordered a steak each plus 1 salad for the same price! As part of the dinner for 2, we sampled a salad each, a hot appie each, our single filet mignon, a side vegetable each and a dessert each! I thought it was a excellent value (my value rating reflects without the coupon).

The started egg and onion house bread apparently is flown in and finished in their ovens. Truly delicious, being a huge bread fan! But it was difficult to slice on our own. I would have preferred if they at least scored it before serving. Everything was really delicious, but the most note-worthy items were the salads (particularly the Morton's and tomato w/ bleu cheese), and the desserts. The hot chocolate cake was heavenly as was the creme brule.

Yes, on the expensive side especially the $50 lone single porterhouse and not to forget $14 martinis, but it's definitely a must to experience at least once. I'd return in a heartbeat the next time I see another online coupon specials.

The ambiance was really nice. You walk in to the dining area and the aromas make you salivate from the moment you sit down to the last bite of dessert. I've never been to Chicago, but somehow it felt very Chicago-like to me.
The service was excellent throughout the evening. I can't fight giving them the glowing review. They made our evening a memorable one.

Disappointed.

There were more families than couples present this past Sat. as well as an overall casually dressed crowd. The servers were literally shouting out their food explanations & such (as they present the meats raw & greens & poor large live unwatered lobster from a serving cart) to each of the new guests as the evening wore on & the room filled up. Beautiful decor, well-lit w/ lighter coloured furnishings. It makes for a warmer elegance that's very welcoming.

The US grainfed dblecut filet mignon was not very exciting. 1 order was made well--blackened but not bitter so it had a nice crunch to it while the inside was relatively tender; the other was unevenly cooked that was still, for the most part, rare, so not worth complaining about. I ended up using the side of sauce. It's bad when that outshines the steak. The bournaise sauce tasted of butterscotch or similar. Didn't much care for the rough texture of the meat.

Except for the 2 strips of anchovies, the house salad's boring & overpriced. Oysters weren't shucked well. They still clung to the shell & 1/6 had shell bits in it.

The bone-in rib eye was very flavourful but at a price. The salmon disappointed.

Lobster bisque tasted more of mushroom than lobster The sides weren't generously portioned as the server boasted it'd be. There was a thick soaked piece of breadlike (nobody ate it) object hidden under the thin layer of mushrooms. The asparagus was pale & anemic.

They gouge you on drinks.

Their housebread, tho similar, does not compare to that of Gotham's.

The chocolate molten lava cake made from scratch & tasty served w/ ice cream was not worth the $16 tag when even Saltlik's take outshines theirs. The $10 upside-down apple pie w/ the stressed-by-server-repeatedly "Haagen Daz" vanilla was just overpriced caramelized apple pieces piled on top of a soaked crust buried under.

I wanted to love them since I loved the warmer decor, but food & service-wise, I prefer their competition by far.

Morton's has a good name, so I and my wife decided to give it a try. We were very disappointed.

The service was good, the decor is quite dated and can't compare with other steak houses in town or in other North American cities that charge similar prices. The beef tenderloin was badly cooked -- the outside was too cooked, tough, and dry, while the inside was too raw. Just this alone was distracting enough that I could not even pay attention to the taste of the meat. The prawn that came with it (surf and turf) was OK, as were the sides. The wine selection was OK. All in all, I will not return.

Went for dinner last night with some friends. Decide on Mortons as some of us had not been here before. Had a salad for the appy and crabmeat and steak for dinner. The crabmeat was good but nothing special about the steak. I was thinking of asking for A1 sauce for the steak. My dessert was very good chocolate lava cake. The coffee was cold. Spent over $120 per person as we had some wine with dinner but I don't think i will be going back as there was no value for money we spent. In these tough economic times there are better restaurants around. I am sure that I can get this type of dessert some other place. It was an average night. Nothing wrong with the service but the food quality was very average.

My first encounter with Morton's was several years ago but to this day the only thing that was memorable about the meal was the yummy baked potato! We took advantage of the coupon for 2 - some special that allowed you to have a three course meal. I too, wasn't overly impressed when they brought out the meal and veggies tray and a slightly diappointed when I had the actual meal - I don't remember the meat being that good - but Morton's was so hyped up back in the day. Perhaps now it's better, I don't know, but it never hurts to try it at least once just so you can say you did. =)

Way Overpriced!

We took my Dad to Morton's for his birthday Friday night. WOW! Was expecting to be at a high-end restaurant but NOT that overpriced!!
Our waiter seemed very, um, non-chalant, very it's a job kind of person. The food was very good but I've had better steaks at other places. Four of us had two prime ribs, one medium well and one medium. They were tastey but found it very fatty tasting. My Mom had the salmon, which I found out after dinner that it was overcooked. (Made a great salmon melt sandwich the next day though!!!) My hubby usually has a drink or two with dinner and I just kept my toes crossed that he didn't order any as I didn't want to see what the price would be for it. With dinner, the six of us shared two ceasar salads, which didn't taste very ceasary; a plate of mushrooms, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. My Mom had the HUGE baked potato but still can't justify the price of a potato!! For dessert, we pre-ordered the Hot Chocolate Cake which was delicious but for $14???? Way overpriced!! We also got the Key Lime Pie which was also delicious BUT way overpriced.
Morton's is a decent restaurant, but you will have to be at the higher tax bracket to eat here. I don't like going to a restaurant and watch what I'm eating because of the price. I want to be able to eat what I want. If I win a million dollars, I don't think I would go there still - Gotham's for sure!

Food: the sauteed mushrooms were awesome but then again, most of the time at any place they are. My steak came out overcooked. I ordered medium-well and it came out burnt, esp on the edges where it was burnt so badly that they were rock solid. I had to send it back and they promptly fixed my steak and they gave us fresh sides. Otherwise, I would have just given the food rating a decent to poor.

Service: our waiter was esp snooty. Everyone else's seemed really friendly. When we were leaving and looking at the wall of pics of celebrities, another waiter actually came up and talked to us. Not good when your own waiter keeps rushing past you and avoiding your eye contact and other waiters talk to you more.

Ambiance: it wasn't a place to take pictures. It was kind of dim and looked kind of old.... very old Chicago or something. I def. liked Gotham much more.

We Ordered the special they have on their website right now (the steak and seafood). Thought we'd have a nice 'guys' night out so a few of my friends went to Morton's. The steak itself is definitely better than the keg (and I love the keg mind you)...but my Gotham's experience still beats Mortons by far in terms of steak. All the other food we got was good...nothing extravagant...although the Mac and Cheese was quite good.

I've heard a lot of people here rave about their Chocolate Cake...but I've had much better, it was good...but just that...good...

Service was good...I guess the server saw that we were just a bunch of goofy guys and was funny and personal...not 'upscaly-ish' service...but the service definately was good.

We all left completley stuffed...its not cheap...but its worth it imho...

came here for my gf's bday and took advantage of the fall special: $119 for two people. this package deal included steak, choice of seafood (two to pick from), choice of salad (two to pick from), choice of any second side and also choice of dessert (two to pick from). all i can say is that we were STUFFED by the end of the night... every single dish was prepared great, steak just the way we wanted it (medium rare), prawns & scallops were so tasty, the food was just that good!
also, the menus had my gfs name printed at the top since i had informed them of the special occasion. the service was great - server was very polite, attentive and constantly made sure everything was to our liking, great guy!

wish i could come here more often however without the fall special, would definitely be breaking the bank at this place.. cant complain tho! recommend for a special occasion!

I have dined here on one occasion and will not go back. The prices are simply outrageous for the quality of the food presented, which is decent but nothing to rave about. The service was found to be condescending and apathetic and certainly not in keeping with the prices charged. Unless you have the need to spend a lot of money, there are far better steak establishments in this burg.

Everything Done Right

Was invited here for a company dinner a few months ago and left highly satisfied.

Morton's food is not too fancy in presentation, overly complicated like snotty pretenious "fusion" restaurants. What you see is what you get, good portions, you understand what you are eating and it is prepared perfectly.

Everything I ate from salad, steak & desert was just A+. Salad was perfectly and evenly tossed. The steak of course was big, perfectly seasoned and cooked as I asked it to be. Too many places overcook your steak by one notch over what you request.

Ambience is a little old school "classic" and not contemporary like the KEG....a place I really don't understand why they could hang their name as a steak house...highly overrated.

To top it off, they have a wonderful selection of wines which only served to enhance an already enjoyable dinner.

Only possible concern about this place is the money...this place ain't cheap to eat, but I'm willing to spring money to go to this place again.

We went to Morton's last Saturday night for a celebration dinner. We had oysters and steak tomato as appetizers. The oysters were sweet and fresh, so was the tomato. The blue cheese dressing was very tasty and flavourful but not salty. We ordered porterhouse and double cut filet mignon, medium rare. I have to say they were absolutely perfect and delicious. Everyone must have the Morton’s soufflé for dessert. It is the best in Vancouver. The texture and sweetness were perfect, others don’t even come close. I've been to Morton's a few times and I've to say the food is consistently good, and I always get attentive service.

wanted to try a "high-end" restaurant for valentines day. spent close to $200 for 2ppl. but well worth it. started off with a crab cake. and yes, there was only one. nevertheless, it was very delicious. my filet mignon was made just the way i like it- med. rare. and my bf's filet mignon and lobster tail was also excellent. also ordered side asparagus and wild mushrooms. pile of mushrooms were very tasty. but the BIG pile of mushrooms only looked like a big pile cause there was a piece of bread hiding within the pile!!! i hope that it was supposed to be in there!!! anyway, we had room for dessert so we ordered the hot chocolate cake. actually, we were asked to order the dessert when we ordered the rest of the meal cause it takes them 40 mins to make it from scratch! anyway, it was super yummy. would go back again... on a special occasion!

The steaks at the Keg are as good, and a hell of a lot cheaper than here. And I'm not a fan of the Keg to begin with. The food is insanely expensive...which would be fine if you get great quality for you money-you don't!
The asparagus is wilty and not fresh or flavourful. The onion rings taste like onion rings you'd get at the fair.
The whole presentation of the raw meat at the table is extremely unappetizing. And for such a nice and expensive room, the servers lack of knowledge is ridiculous.
Also I order my steak medium rare and got medium well.
The rooms are absolutely gorgeous, but that doesnt allow them to give crap food and service and still charge an arm and a leg.
I think the design is worth checking out. If you want to go, go for a couple of drinks in the bar. DONT EAT HERE!

The food at Morton's is good. I've been there a couple of times in the past. My business clients seem to enjoy the ambiance and quality of food. Service is a little inconsistent at times. Sometime our waits can get a little too lengthy or a request can easily be forgotten. The ambiance is nice and expected for a high end eatery.

Unfortunately, there's a well know steakhouse franchise, known as the KEG that offers better value. For me, Morton's is a good business expense but if I want great value, I'll stick to the Keg.

When my co-workers and I decided to go to Morton's for a nice steak dinner, we expected something that was apparently impossible for this "restaurant". SERVICE. I arrived later than the others, so I don't know what the waiting time was like, however it took about 45 minutes before we were approached for drink requests and appetizers. When I asked for soft water the waiter looked like he couldn't understand what I was asking for so I asked for plain water, not carbonated. He replied with a flat "no". I guess it was too difficult for him to get a simple cup of water from a tap. The appetizers were decent, nothing special, tasted like one of those pre-packaged meals from Safeway. The main course was nice enough, my steak was done the way I liked it and the potatoes were nice, creamy, and rich. Dessert was the definite "dead" part of the meal, to foreshadow a bit. I am allergic to nuts, and notified the waiter of that when I arrived in order to avoid problems later. I reminded him of it, and asked him if there were any nuts in the chocolate cake. He said no there were not. I asked if he was sure, and he said he was. About four bites into the cake, which was rather good too bad I wasn't able to finish it, I had an allergic reaction. I left to get my medication and informed the waiter of the problem. He didn't seem too caring, didn't offer any help whatsoever, and basically shrugged it off as something that wasn't his problem. When we came back afterwards, the waiter came in with the bill and without even apologizing left again. After talking to the manager he eventually refunded us for the bill, which would should have been the least of his worries since it could have easily turned into a lawsuit. I will never eat here again, never recommend this place, and hope to see the day where they actually provide service instead of a near death experience.

Problems..

Don't go, here's why... The scallops were not fresh. The fois gras was alright. Btw, nothing looks like in their picture. The decor was dated and thes ervice ... well, this aint Cactus Club so nothing pretty.
Their soup = tasted like canned bisque from Costco or similar low quality warehouse.
They had French Onion Soup.. but the waiter was very honest, my friend wanted to order that and he told us that it's not today's special. He got it anyway.

My other friend order a chocolate cocktail drink wth rum. They told me they could only taste water, and it was nasty. The waiter even forgot to punch in their drink, and we had to remind him 20 minutes later. Finally .. main course, witch i cared the most. My medium rare "certified angus" rib-eye was impossible to chew completely. I had to throw half of it away. I attempted very hard to swallow some.
And the sides were crappy. In fact, you pay extra for it and its bad. You get a huge boiled carrot with half a tiny potato. Being unhappy all the way, i was hoping for an "average" ice cream for dessert. First spoon of ice cream in my mouth... ITS ALL POWDER!!! I couldn't taste any ice cream, just a mouthful of powder!! I made my friends try, and they were completely shocked. I've never been to a restaurant that crappy, that pissed me off from appetizer to desserts. You can't find a restaurant worse than that. Imagine how angered we were given the price here.
Their atmosphere is below avereage for a steak house.

Just OK - but not for these prices
By nervo of near Van (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, August 31, 2009 - 9:53pm [Dine in]

Just OK, but not worth the money. Food – yes, they do use the special meat from the US that the waiter explains to you, but that is subjective for taste. But the steaks they served us cannot compare to other high end steakhouses we've been to, even with all the salt and marination they put on. The sides were OK as so was the desert but nothing to write home about. Plates were unusually small and food presentation in general was very average. We felt nickel and dimed for everything.
Service – rather polite and reasonably quick but our waiter had to check if they had the wine we wanted (because, he said, it was Thursday??) and didn't know which menu applies at the moment. I guess our unusual arrival at 6:15 pm set him off. Still, actual service. This is not an Asian restaurant. Ambiance – very generic, very spiritless. Actually, it was quite boring. Summary – at $100 and up per person you can get better steak, better service and definitively more inviting setups. The negative reviews here are sure correct. I wish I hadn't listened to the adverts and read the reviews here first. This place is definitely overpriced. I am willing to pay $100 per person for me and Mrs. but not when the food is so bland.

We are used to fine dining establishments and this one falls short from beginning to end. We finally got a chance to visit this steakhouse. The ambiance is horrible unless you like looking outside during dinner. The Steaks, extremely overpriced and full of grizzle. They were sent back twice already due to being overcooked. We gave up after that as our $10 potatoes (you must order everything separately) were already cold.

Ended up wasting a $100 gift certificate that we had received a year ago. We should have thrown it out. Not worth enduring the pain and I wouldn't torture others by recommending this placet.

The waiters were not that which should be working in fine dining. I would compare them to a shlucky US establishment style wait staff.

Do yourself a favour and skip this one.
