Moderne Burger is a retro burger joint on West Broadway. All of their burgers are made fresh daily and fries are cut and cooked to order.
I visited Moderne Burger last night with my wife and child. Our first impression was that the new decor is very nice on the 50s theme, but that the incredible amount of wasted floorspace was very inefficient. It would have been easy to have twice as many seats in the place without it feeling crowded. It was strange to come up with such a design after a one-year closure and reno. The booth benches were also too narrow for 2 average-sized adults to sit comfortably.
We had to wait about 15 minutes for a seat and they seemed happy to accomodate us especially since we were there with a young child. We each had a burger and fries. The fries were very hot and tasty and the portion was huge. The burgers were mediocre. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and the bun quite good if a little light and puffy. The special sauce was pretty flavourful. I had the cheddar cheese and my wife the Swiss. While the cheeses were not processed, they were from a pre-cut slab and not as flavourful as real, quality cheese. The burger this most reminded me of was from the longtime local favourite across the street. Nothing to go out of your way for or wait in line for. Maybe "unseasoned" beef isn't something to brag about...?
The value was okay, but I'd rather they shave a buck or two off the price and give me fewer fries. Sure, I'll eat them all, but do I really need that many? I saw so many plates going back with unfinished fries that I thought it was really wasteful.
The table service was okay, but not attentive. For the number of staff working - four on the floor - and four or five cooking, few tables, and a very limited menu, you'd think they could crank out burgers and fries at a fast pace. While we didn't have to wait overly long, the service wasn't quick and it meant that tables barely turned over at all. Another reason for long lines.
Overall, I don't think we'll go back despite living in the neighbourhood. We can go to the aforementioned competitor across the street and be more comfortable, get bottomless pop, and bottomless fries (if we're really hungry), and a similar or better burger for a few bucks less.
If you're doing a survey of best burgers in town you'll have to drop by, but I can't imagine this place placing in the top five despite it only doing burgers. Why the strong love for this place?
Very nice decor and environment, however pricing on menu is expensive, and including tips and a delicious milkshake your meal will come to more than 15$ per person, which I believe for a place like Moderne just doesn't feel right, For that kind of money there are many better places to eat, although it has a very nice retro feel, the food definitely doesn't have a retro price tag.
I have to agree with some other reviews here, food is good, but it's not worth waiting in a long line in the rain for. I do like their food though, burgers are and fries are good. Also be warned - cash only and there aren't really any options on the menu other than burgers.
Ambiance hits you first - and it's pretty cool, although there's a lot of scotch tape holding it together. Seemingly indifferent service from the waitron. The burgers are quite tasty, good toppings - although most you have to pay extra for. Fries are alright, tasty but a little thin. CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE SO GOOD! However, as tasty as the food is, it's overpriced (4.95$/milkshake plus 0.50$ for malted.) Overall I'd say it's worth it if you're hungry enough to want a giant meal and don't mind paying for it.
I love this place the way it looks, the upbeat staff and the people who eat there. The burgers are very large and i can never finish one.
I have only been there a few times, but love it's ambiance. The fries are huge too! It takes you back to the 50's when things were simpler and burgers were the real thing. Not like the franchised takeouts you see nowadays. Very clean too which is a plus for a good eatery!!
By far, best burger joint in town. What a burger joint should be. Go early, as it's always packed. If you're a couple, only order one burger platter because it comes with a few pounds of fries.
I love this place. The owners are awesome and always make us laugh. We go at least once a month. Freshness is the key to our success. The owners memorized our order and make sure we are always treated well. The fries and buns are the very freshest. All the burgers including the veggie burgers are terrific.
Thank you for making this one of our favorite places to go!
When I get a craving for a burger, Modern Burger is one of the few places I immediately think of. There isn't much else on their menu, but their burgers are quite juicy and tasty. The interior is also pretty cool, looks like a place from the 50s. If you want a good old-fashioned burger, this is a good place to go. Don't forget cash as they don't accept credit or debit cards.
ok in search of the best burger
white spot, a bit above average, depends where you go and who makes it
fat burger, awesome but the bun is cheap white bread, the burger is awesome, fresh and perfect
vera's burger. totally pathetic, gross , not much better than mcdonalds
moderne burger, totally average, you can put together a better burger on your bbq anyday. bun was wet and soft mushy absorbed with fat, fries were good. service was a bit above average. atmosphere totally weird, the owner dressed in a hawaiian shirt, sparce decor, weird layout,
wouldnt take visitors there or likely go back ever again.
Great burgers, I ordered two burgers and one milkshake, it was $30 tax in. This was a great burger, the patty was clearly homemade, great quality and the flavours were fabulous, fresh soft bun and not toasted, I hate when I get a toasted bun, lettuce and tomato, mayo and cheddar, what more do you need. Sure it's expensive, but damn good. I recommend trying out Moderne Burger for a delicious burger. Fries were a little saugy, they should serve a crispier and perhaps more seasoned french fry. The menu is limited, all you have is a burger and toppings, but there's nothing wrong with that. It's a great concept, clean and crisp look, very retro and funky.
Pretty Good Burgers and the Shakes are awesome. Although the Menu is limited, the portions are very generous. The Service leaves a lot to be desired. It's a bit strange that they close at 8 on some nights for a burger joint especially in an area where parking is an issue. I wondered why the renovations took so long. I thought they were out of business. I would go back to eat there.
We went to the Moderne Burger for the first time last night despite some not so great reviews here, and I have to say, either they are reading these reviews and acting on them or it just took them a bit of time to get the ball rolling after reopening.
We were attended to as soon as we walked in, and did have a short wait, but it was worth it. our orders were taken soon after we arrived and came without incident soon after. The food was great and the services was perfect - for us. I don't know about others, but when i go to a "burger joint", I don't expect (or want) a hostess or people hovering around my table waiting to refill my water after one sip. Show me to my table, take my order, deliver the food I order in a timely manner, be attentive enough so I can get your attention if I need it, then bring me the bill. And this is what we got, along with genuinely nice staff, great burgers, real cherry coke (not the stuff out of the can), handmade milkshake and super yummy fries.
Another good sign, was the number of people who came in after us who were recognized by the staff. These were people both coming in to eat and picking up take out. Everyone had a pleasant demeanor and as attentive as needed.
The one thing I'd say is that they could fit a few more tables in - if last night was any indication, they sure can fill them. And we will be helping!
We waited for a year for Moderne to reopen. We went a few days after it reopened and the food was terrible. The malt had no malt, the bugers were cold, small and grisley and the fries were OK. The second time the burgers were the same, didn't get a malt and the fries were awful. They seemed to have been cooked two or three times, maybe leftover, they were tough and tasted like sawdust. Too bad, we so looked forward to the best burgers in town, but now have to find another place. Sad.
Ok, I've heard lots of people rave about this place. I've made a point of keeping my expectations down. Don't expect too much.
So we go, service is friendly but very disorganized and sloppy. No quality checks, attempt to offer more beverages, etc.
I got the steak burger with bbq & cheddar, my partner got the turkey burger with cheddar. The steak burger was OK. It tasted like a cheap diner burger, it was good for an $8 burger, only problem was it cost $14.50. The turkey burger was just plain terrible, tasted like a horrible frozen sausage with lots of filler.
We also shared a chocolate milk shake, that while quite thick, was oddly warm? How they achieved that I don't know, and I don't like.
Well, if the prices were half what they were for this glorified burger stand, I would say it's very good. But considering what they charge, I expect quality, for both food and service.
Today I finally got a chance to take my girlfriend to the "recommended" Moderne Burger. The service and the place was not that bad, but when the food arrive after 15 minutes, disappointed started. I ordered a turkey burger with swiss and fries. My girlfriend ordered a coffee mocha milkshake, steak burger with mushrooms and cheddar. My turkey burger was quite well seasoned. But the fries were just horrible. It was like rubber. Not just us complained about the fries, three other tables were also complaining to the owner about it. GUESS what the owner said "sorry, the potato we used to use are out of stock, and for the next three more weeks, we decide to use another type of potato, it is not as good as the one before, yes, but its gotta do for now."
The key factor in making a restaurant successful and would let customers coming back for more is all about the ingredients! But Moderne burger chose a really bad alternative potato which they KNEW! and they still serve it.
When people rate their Steak burger for so high ratings, it isnot so fair for the price they charge. It is a burger with "no fillers, no seasoning of any sort", it's just too plain. It was tastless if you didn't order any sauce with it. At home, we can make the excat same patti, because it just was flavorless.
Definately it was an embarrassment for me taking my girlfriend there. Never go back again.
So after my 4th visit since their renovation/expansion, I am impressed with what I am experiencing at Moderne Burger. I was frank and honest with my opinion with the owner before, and was wondering what it was that caused the difference. I told him I find the patties too well done for my liking. So, this time round, it was done to perfection IMHO. It was juicy and dripping. The burger is now the way I remembered it before the renovation. So thus the two thumbs up review this time.
(As Tina Turner would put it.) I'm sure the fire next door was set to a burger addict in hopes that Moderne Burger would expand. This is the best burger in town. The beef patties are made of some top sirloin concoction and the fries are deep fried in some perfect combination of canola and olive oil i'm certain. It's a mouthful, but I dare you to find a better burger joint. The interior is a fun 50's diner interior minus the kitsch. The service is friendly and efficient. And they serve cherry cola. Nice touch! Can't wait for it to reopen.
We finally tried Moderne burger tonight. Cherry Coke and a burger platter, near perfection. The fries are awesome, the burger was nice and juicy, and the bun was excellent. Try it, you won't be dissapointed! (one note however, we got there early, and just missed having to wait in the rain)
Moderne Burger has the best burgers in Vancouver! I recommend the classic burger made of real sirloin cut beef. We didn't opt for any of the add-ons (cheese, mushrooms, bacon etc.) that were available and were glad that we didn't because the burgers as made were awesome. Perfect burgers without that gross old meaty taste. Lettuce and tomatoe were crisp and the fries were fresh cut and awesome. We tried one of the chocolate milkshakes which was absolutely to die for! You can definitely split with a partner as the "extra" they include equals out to about 3 milkshakes worth. Service was quick and friendly. A definite must viz!
Stopped by with the bf for some burger goodness. I really liked it and so did the bf. There are only 4 burger options (beef, turkey, salmon, veggie) on the menu as well as fries, sodas, and milkshakes. Thats it. We both had the beef burger platter with cheddar cheese added on with the fries and a pop each. The burger was very fresh tasting and even had a little pink in the middle (which I like). It was not oily or greasy at all. I also liked the fries. One thing to note about the burger is that it is not seasoned at all. Both of us had to salt and pepper our burgers to bring out the flavor. Also my boyfriend sat facing the kitchen and saw one of the cooks reach into a bin or something and grab some fries so they are definately NOT cut to order, however they could be cut daily as they did not taste like frozen McCains product.
Ambiance is ok. Booths are comfy and its clean.
Service is also ok. Nothing amazing. They come take your order, bring your drink, drop off your food, and then clear your table and bring your bill. Satisfactory but they missed a step. No one asked us how our meal was. If we'd had a problem we would have had to wave someone down.
This places downfall unfortunately will be the prices. It is simply too expensive for a burger joint (even though it is a good burger). It was 35 bucks for our two platters and pops with a tip. Ouch. And we didn't even have a shake (5$) or a lot of add ons(1.25$ each) for our burgers.
The burgers come with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and special sauce. Thats it. Cheese, bacon, fried onions, mushrooms, etc. are all 1.25 extra each. That can make for a VERY expensive burger if you like all that stuff.
One final note. If you go with another person I suggest one person ordering a platter with the fries and the other person just getting a burger. Neither myself nor my bf ate all of our fries. The portion is humongous and definately enough for two to share.
