I really like their concept of ordering by the ounce..it gives you a chance to try new things without overstuffing yourself. I would shy away from the dessert however, which, in my opinion, was too overpowering (especially the cheesecake mousse..it tasted like butter!)

All in all everything was above average. Service and Ambience were definately on the plus side. Menu is unique offering customers to order by the ounce which is quite rare ( No pun intended ).
Overall as a new establishment, IM sure they'll work out their kinks.
Great dining room with 3 distinctive rooms, lounge, main dining room and kitchen room.
Will be back to try the oyster bar !

Nothing too special

The service was the best thing about our DOV meal. Very attentive and professional servers but they spent quite a bit of time telling us to come back and try their normal menu. The problem with the DOV meal was it was like a tasting menu coming from a factory line rather than a high class kitchen. At the end of two weeks I am sure good chefs get fed up turning out the same food every night but the food was warm instead of hot with very small portions. We loved the china, wine glasses and the knives that stood blade upwards. Overall a good experience but next year I think they should concentrate on serving a proper meal if they are going to satisfy the $35/meal non-business crowd.

Having been at Metro a couple of times I think I can make an actual review of this restaurant.

Food: It think they have good ingredients and good products, there methods of cooking them are interesting, also shows some flair for their skills. The dishes as they come out look clean and look good. I think the best dish I've had from their menu would be their Grilled Humboldt Calamari since it was extremely flavorful without becoming exceedingly salty or rubbery due to over cooking. Another interesting concept is the cut to order menu and I think it is what makes this restaurant unique. It gives people a chance to try a bit of something different each time and for how much you want to eat of it. I wouldn't say it's customer trap, since one knows how much an ounce would be and it comes with the sides no matter what the size your protein is, so that's great.

My one concern with the food and the reason it doesn't get a perfect rating is because sometimes simplicity is better and I think that they could ease up on garnishing some items. I think a prime example of this was the sorbet and cane fruit I had. Thje dish was absolutely delicious without the walnuts. When I did take a bite with the nuts, it completely obliterated my palate and the flavours off the sorbets and fruit became null.

Service: Definitely right on the ball for this one. Insightful when asked for recommendations and asked countless times if the food was alright. Maybe ease up on that, but it's bettter than getting no recognition.

Ambience: What can I say it is amazing, lovely decor, can't wait for their oyster bar to be up for another try.

Went for DOV with the family, there were 6 of us in total on a Monday night.

The ambiance was nice and relaxing - the chairs were actually quite comfortable! The restaurant appeared to be divided into different sections - dining, lounge, and an area near the open kitchen. It was on the quieter side.

The food was decent, but needs some work still. The calamari appetizer left a funny taste in everyone's mouth, while the winter tomato salad was tasty - I've never tried chayote raw before! The land trio entree was enjoyed by the people who ordered it. I was a bit disappointed in the sea samplings - my albacore tuna was over cooked, and the portion was half the size of the other person at our table who ordered it as well. The other 2 fish were over cooked as well. The desserts were simply presented but tasty. The amuse bouche were the surprises of the night, enjoyable.

The service was lacking. Our waiter was really not there the entire night. He spilled sauce from the appetizer plate on someone and failed to notice, even with the gasps from everyone at the table. We tried to catch his attention for more water, and coffee, but it took several attempts. Some servers explained what the orders, while others just dropped off the plates.

Overall, there was no "wow" factor for everyone,... may wait a while to try it again, on a non-DOV night.

Need to work out the kinks

What a great space! They've done a lovely job and its nice that there are finally more restaurants popping up on that side of downtown. It was a shame that the restaurant was only 25% full on a weekend. I think that they should get some music playing in that place. Even a mini radio would help people linger. It's strange dining at a sparsely filled restaurant with no music. The food still needs work. The meats are amazing, but what's on the rest of the plate is quite bland. Fish dishes need finetuning. Someone must have forgotten to season it. The dining concept is just brilliant, everything is sold by the ounce & one picks how much of what one wants. Just needs to work on making everything on the plate taste great. The service was attentive and not overbearing. Ver friendly.

Great designed room

Having eaten at Metro's sister restaurant Rare, I thought I would venture over to see what the new restaurant was like. I was impressed with the design of the room and fell in love with the it. I sat in the lounge with my date and had some of their "metro plates" with a nice glass of house wine. The bartenders were very accomodating and friendly. I found the food to be very good and at the right price but I think I was expecting it to be on par with Rare. I understand that Metro is brand new and that it takes time to get everyone firing at 100% so I will go back again in a few months. Dont get me wrong I was happy with what I was served but maybe I went in thinking it was going to be just like Rare and to be fair I didnt have an entree.

I think it is interesting that some previous posts are assuming that one of the reviews is from someone who works at the restaurant. I was told by a friend that they think most posts on here are from workers, owners or disgruntled staff etc so who knows. But really who cares it is the internet and if I can post whatever I want so should they. Will review again when I visit in the Fall.

my dining experience at Metro is quite good. I like its location, close to waterfront, and the restaurant kind of overlooks the inlet. The style of the restaurant is casual elegant, it doesnt have table cloths but at least i felt it was clean, contemproary and casually elegant. The lounge area was quite massive so i guess a lot of customers come here for drinks.

I went for the dine out menu, I had the beef cheek to start, the portion was fairly huge for a starter, i was half full after finishing it, the beef cheek was tender. For entree I had the salmon, it was quite juicy and not over-cooked, the 'pickled' tomato added flavour to the salmon, tho eating the tomato alone would be too sour. My friend had the duck for entree and i tried it, it was really good, juicy and not dry at all. I had the baked cheesecake moouse for dessert, awesome! it is not the ordinary cheesecake, the cheese was more smooth and light, and the pastry was crisp, the fruit sauce mixed with the cheesecake very well.

Service was professional and courteous.

The restaurant was not full on a saturday night during peak hours, i'm not sure why ppl are not choosing this restaurant but I think its dine out menu is worth a try, tho i do think if they priced it $28 instead of $38 a lot more people will be willing to try.

(i created that acronym in the review title btw)....keke. ANYWAYS, had our annual x-mas dinner tonight with my siblings...place wasn't too packed, then it became say 50% full by the time we left...eh Tuesday night, what can you do? Anyways very nice decor...we were greeted by a lovely hostess. My sister also had that cucumber cocktail drink which was unique and refreshing. I had 3 oz. of their halibut, and 3 oz. of their tenderloin which was LOVELY. Each entree comes with a different side too, the sablefish came with a mushroom risotto which was also, verrry good....mmm....definitely recommend this place. Food could've been a tad warmer though...although it's not worth frettin' over. Their dessert is alright. What can i say.....this place is a MUST-try if you're a fellow foodie like me :)

Went here for dine out vancouver. The tasting menu is marvelous. It really portrays what the restaurant is all about. There are rare items on the normal menu that we definitely want to come back to try, such as arctic caribou! I had the selections from the land which included deer, duck, and striploin. They were beautiful presented and each had a great flavour. Don't be mislead by the size of the entrees, it really does fill you up without making you uncomfortably stuffed. There is definitely quality rather than quantity!

The ambiance was very lounge like and modern with a simple and clean feel. The service was exceptional! The restaurant director actually took time to talk to us, explaining the menu when we seemed intrigued and offered us complementary port selection to go with our desserts. His choice of port, well let's just say, it melted in my mouth and made my chocolate mouse...all the more flavour - full!

His extra attention pushed our experience up a notch and we will definitely come back again and again.

Good Service, Horrible Food

I know it is strong to say horrible food, but it was that. I ate a plate of lentils that was so toxic in vinegar it literally made my stomach queasy long after dinner. I found the menu a veritable jigsaw puzzle, something I am not good at. I also have no idea how much ounces of different meats look like--a steak yes but not anything else. Everything tasted either sugary or sour. My dessert was a mess which i won't even describe for fear of recounting it. One of the worst dining experiences food-wise (our server was lovely) I have ever had.

We sat on the patio and hada great view of the city and the shore ot the north. We really enjoyed the calamari and deer. Desserts were the perfect size and full of flavour.

Don't waste your time or money here! Not a single vegeterian dish on the menu and on a special occasion they couldn't even grant the wishes of the birthday girl! All she wanted was a chicken breast on a salad and they couldn't do it. The server was very good and was our highlight of the evening but to disappoint a lady on her B-day is in excusable! We will NEVER go back! The manger didn't even offer anything except an apology for the ruin of the evening!

Metro is a wonderful surprise

Wanted to share my pleasant surprise at Metro.

My family and I live in Houston, TX. We were returning from a week skiing at Whistler and needed to spend the night in Vancouver on departure day. Originally, we'd hoped to visit Tojo's but found Tojo's was not open Easter Sunday.

I left the hotel Sunday night to get a cup of hot chocolate at Mink (a couple blocks down the street from our hotel) and discovered a promising looking restaurant - Metro on Burrard.

Returned to the hotel and checked dinehere.ca reviews and made a reservation for the family. It was truly a great find for us!

1. Loved the "order by the ounce" concept. My wife and I have 6-yr old triplets and almost never order for them from the (generally bad) kids menus offered at fine dining restaurants. It was a real treat to be able to have the table sample 10 different small portions. Everyone had plenty of something they really liked to eat.

2. The food was uniformly fabulous. Both my wife and I travel extensively for work and frequently dine in foodie havens. Metro delivered the goods. This is in contrast to Araxi at Whistler (we'd had dinner there the night before), where the food and service didn't live up to the hype and prices.

3. Unlike many restaurants serving first rate food, Metro was very welcoming and gracious to a family travelling with kids.

I gather Metro is relatively new and building its clientele. Tonight I can happily report the restaurant is very clearly firing on all cylinders. Vancouver is IMHO very lucky to have Metro.

We will definitely visit Metro again when we return to BC. Well done!

Went to Metro on dine out after hearing from a friend that it was good on last year's dine out. The ambiance is nice and cozy. The calamari appetizer was tasty. I ordered the land sample-the sirloin and venison were good but the duck tasted like lamb for some reason. My friend had the sea sample and it was good overall but not good enough for us to go again. We did add a mushroom side dish but after the meal we both didn't fell full. I've had other dine out experience and I always felt full after the meal. So maybe the 'sampling' size of meal is not my cup of tea.

Had dinner at Metro last week with some clients from out of town. The room is beautiful with a nice lounge and bar to enjoy cocktails before dinner. The dining room has a great view of the North Shore Mountains and Coal Harbour. We started dinner with some local oysters on the half shell and then right into entrees. The ability for me to pick what items I wanted and the portion size is a great concept, it allowed me to be in charge of what I wanted to eat. The bison ribeye while not as tender as beef ribeye definitely had more flavour. The duck was cooked perfectly as was the deer. We added a side of the spiny lobster to surf and turf our meals. A great wine menu and the maitre d' helped us pick a beautiful California Cabernet to go with our meal. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Food great!!! Service, hmmm ...

Went there to dine tonight ... and read the heading "Great service, horrible food" or something along those lines. I have something to say about that.
To start the food was great, the service was less then what I expected for a restaurant of that caliber.
Mistakes were made and I felt like the (possibly) manager was constantly at our table attempting to overcome our servers short comings. Works but at the same time still left with the reminder that our server made at least four too many mistakes. (One I can handle, and two I can even walk away from).
So needless to say, not too happy with the service. But still if the food was at least good, I may just give it a second shot. But the servers should really step it up a knotch!!!

PS if you see the dine out menu from Metro's personal website, it is not what you get. You have to read their menu from the Dine Out Vancouve website. Again, a mistake that should/could have easily been avoided.

I have finally tried the Metro and was glad that I did. I enjoyed the ambiance of the place and the food tasted great. So, a good experience. The place was pretty busy on the Friday night that my husband and I tried it out and all the servers were quite busy, a few things could be imrpoved to make it outstanding but I will want to try again on a different night of the wk.

My companion and I (who'd spent the previous 5 days dining sumptuously at 3 Fairmont hotels) found this place to be very high-end gourmet, with everything done right. The ambiance is great, and the food phenomenal. The idea of choosing how many ounces of each entree you want is terrific; you can choose 3 oz of rabbit, 3 oz of steak and 3 oz of sablefish if you would like a variety. The menu was a wonderful panoply of many different options, from light dining to a 5 course meal. We thoroughly enjoyed it, and as out-of-towners, can only hope that nothing has changed if we get the chance to visit Vancouver again.

Pretty looking Milestones!
By rippy6 of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, July 22, 2007 - 9:37pm [Dine in]

Went to Metro last week and after spending way too much time reading the 50 menu items we finally settled on the rooster drops and satays and then moved on to the sablefish and veal. They were busy but there was also a lot of staff so the service for our drinks and food was way too slow. The rooster drops turned out to be chicken drumettes in some bland store bought chicken chili sauce, the satays were so fatty and gristly they were inedible. The server removed them without asking how they were. The sablefish was cooked well but the accompaniments just did not work. Subjective I know but undercooked risotto (rich) and smoked mushrooms (meaty and rich) and the sable (extremely rich) just did not make sense on the plate. Probably our fault but the veal also came with an undercooked risotto even though the veal was cooked nicely. After 2 hours for those two courses we did not want to brave dessert. Extremely predictable wine list and a menu that has so many items on it that they just seem to be trying to have something for everyone. A noble cause but they can't prepare them all properly. This restaurant is just like any Milestones or Earls but with much higher prices and the air of being better than those restaurants. After the last review, I read gourmetvancouvers other reviews and find it impossible to believe that he/she does not work for either Rare or Metro. I am not even sure if Metro was open when gourmetvancouver first reviewed it. For shame.
