Serving traditional Greek food. Delivery available.
I wrote the initial description of this restaurant so have a read. I do patronize other places for lunch as they are closer to work (eg Kalamata) and they really do not compare. I have also consulted colleagues of Greek origin and they too agree that if they dine out, its Maria's. I loooove their roast lamb! Melt in your mouth.
Went to try this place out because of all the good reviews posted here. I guess you guys just went on a good day, or just love greek food anywhere.
So when we came in, we had some appetizers.....and first we didnt think pita bread was complimentary because it wasn't mentioned in the menu....so we decided to order some. But the server told us that there is some included, which is good, but she didnt tell us if she took down our orders for pita or not. So I had to go upto her and ask if she did, and she said no. So we had calamari and homous.........and homous is kinda a ripoff unless it comes with more pita bread. Calamari, however was light and crispy. Very good....better than earls.
For entrees, my friend had beef souvlaki ...and my other friend and i had the chicken. Chicken was too seasoned....thus too salty. The greek salad and rice were alright, but Stephos have it better. My friend who had beef was eating his rice and took out a piece of hair from his mouth. Disgusted, he told the man who looked like the manager. To our surprise, he just took away the plate and took a long time to bring another, without any apology. Plus, it came so late that we had to leave and pack the meal....and he charged us.
It wa very unprofessional, and although the ambience was nice, the service and lack of food preparation was unacceptable. NEVER coming to this place again.
I had Kleftiko (lamb shoulder) and a glass of retsina. The restina came in a larger glass than Stepho's but was definitely not as good. The food was also not as good as Stepho's yet the price twice. The lamb shoulder was huge, but the meat was tough. There was way too little rice and pita. I still have a chunk of lamb sitting in my fridge and nothing to go with it. The greek salad was not bad. For that price, I was expecting better quality. They made me want Stepho's so bad.
I've only come here a couple times but years apart & I've not been disappointed, so what are the odds? We liked it the first time cuz the food was hot, seasoned well, and service great. We've also been to the one in downtown & it was equally satisfying. In choosing a place to eat Greek, I favored the 20 min trek here.
The pita was fairly warm & crispy but came with nothing. We would've liked to know that one of our dishes came with tzaziki sauce (but then I should remember souvlaki always comes with that!). But the server kindly gave us butter for free. The lamb shoulder was tender (usually that's the worry) & seasoned well. The lamb souvlaki was crispy on the outside & tender on the inside. Both dishes came hot. The Greek salad, which is often a disappointment in food courts, was covered generously with feta. It had a great balance of cukes & peppers. I often hate it when Greek salads don't have enough cukes. The portioning was excellent. The rice pilaf had good seasoning, was warm, & soft. I don't really know how much "better" it could taste. All our rice was finished. The potatoes also appropriately seasoned were warm & large.
The service was great. Gave us more hot water without us having to ask. Usually, places just top up on your cold water & don't care about customers who are sick & wish to just drink hot water. I wish I had tried a dessert so I could comment on that. The choices seem quite good. The prices are a bit more expensive than a place like Stepho's. But I'd much prefer a quiet & spacious restaurant, free parking available, and without the wait. I think the meat here is of much better quality anyway. The portions are not as big as we didn't have any leftovers. But I'd much rather go here.
We at here early Sat. evening. We were in a hurry so only ordered a main course. I had lamb chops (4 large meaty ones) and my friend had the calamari dinner. My lamb chops were excellent (I think they were $21.95). I really liked the seasoning and they were large and perfectly done. I also liked the potatoes. My meal also came with Greek salad and rice. Thmenu is very typical, but I thought it was very good value. The service was prompt and professional. By the time we left at 6:30 the place was full.....families and couples and everyone seemed to be enjoying their meal. Average wine list.
I was craving Greek food and so my boyfriend and I went here for dinner because it was close and I'd heard good things. We ordered a pan fried cheese to share, I got the Kalamari and he got the Dolmathes. The cheese was good with just the right amount of lemon. My Kalamari dinner was ok in terms of taste - I've had better and I've had worse. My boyfriend said his dolmathes were good but he'd also had better. I would say prices are about average.
Service was quick and polite. Our waters were refilled throughout dinner. The ambiance is typical Greek. We had a table by the open window which was kind of nice for some fresh air, but is right along the traffic on 4th. Overall, with so many Greek restaurants in Vancouver, we may or may not go back.
I had the vegetarian spinakopita dinner. It was good, but not really spectacular. You can get the same dish but better, and with dolmas, at Candia Taverna for less. I'd reccommend Candia Taverna for Greek food over Maria's. My friend had the spaghetti dish, while he wasn't very hungry, it was still good. Go to Chianti's for much better pasta.
Service was alright. The waitress was hott.
Ever since the Great Greek restaurant in California, which has absolutely the most delicious pita EVER, I've been trying almost every Greek restaurant around Vancouver, Richmond and Burnaby to find the best humus and pita. And here at Maria's, they have got hands-down the best humus I've ever tasted. Super creamy, garlicy and the just the right amount of citrus! I crave it quite often and have ordered humus and pita as take out. Although the pita here in Lower Mainland are all thick and bread like, unlike the pita I fell in love with at Great Greek, which was so soft and buttery inside and crusty on the outside.
The servers here are friendly. Beside humus, we loved the Keftedes and Moussaka. Lasagna is not too good.
Decor is lovely, service wonderful, and great value! The souvlaki plates come with the traditional Greek salad (topped with delicious feta cheese!), finely baked potatoes, and very filling rice. I had the lamb, and it was delicious, especially significant since I'm not too huge a lamb fan. My friends had the meatballs and prawn dishes, all very tasty and with just the right amount of butter. The fried kalamari appetizer is also good. Pita bread soft and chewy. I'll definitely come back!
We are regulars at this Greek place. I like the lamb chops (Pathakias Skaras), lamb souvlaki, and the calamari. Some people are complaining about items I never order but if you order one of those dishes you shouldn't go wrong.
The service is fair to excellent depending on who's working. There's two brothers who I think own the place. One seems to like to work there and one doesn't. The first one is friendly and the other one is not.
The value is good. It may be a bit more expensive than some other Greek places but the food is better.
The ambience is fairly standard for a Greek place. Just about any Greek restaurant in Vancouver is the same.
Because a Greek friend told me this was one of the better Greek restaurants in town, I had high expectations. Well, I'd never go back here. All the food was pretty good, but the service was really disappointng--asked for water that never came and same for a napkin. They never came around to ask how things were, which would have given us the opportunity to remind them. The comic relief came when a waiter took a plate from another table in such a way that a piece of meat from that plate went flying off the plate and landed under my foot. So they don't bring things you ask for and deliver things you don't ask for!
