Lovely and lively old world atmosphere. 2 dozen types of authentic Naples style pizzas on the menu. Antipasta and gnocchi also recommended. Look for the eye-catching non-discrete wood burning oven in the open kitchen. Mama Mia!
I've been here four times for lunch with family and friends. All my visits were pre-renovation but we're planning a birthday lunch in the next couple of weeks to check out the renos. I think this is one of the best places on "The Drive" for Italian-style fare. My regular order is the Pomodoro E Cipolla Salad to start and the Gnocchi Ai Quattro Formaggi as an Entree. This is my version of Heaven!! I love the flavour combo of tomato, onion and gorgonzola dressing for a salad. The gnocchi is always fresh and practically melts in your mouth. There is always some leftover to take home (just re-heat it delicately). Others I've dined with have often ordered the pizzas and there have never been any complaints and there are often repeat visits at later dates. I've also sampled some of the Antipasta offerings and everything has been very fresh and quite delicious. I've never had any complaints about the service and we've never been rushed out the door after our meals have been finished. While the ambiance was nothing to write home about, I should note...I'm not there for the design architecture...I'm there for the consistently good food. Although the prices are a tad high, in my opinion, I don't think they're out of line with comparable restaurants. Looking forward to visiting Marcello's again very soon for another great lunch.
Stopped in at Marcello's for a weekend lunch.
We were seated immediately, and given our menus and prompted for drinks, which we declined.
We ordered the pizza contadina, and the baked canelloni stuffed spinach and ricotta. Both were very good, albiet the pizza was a little soggy in the middle.
Our server was quite pleasant, and prompt. The room is very bright and warm
Marcello's is one of my favourite Italian restaurants in this price range. The tagliatelle with the olives and tomatoes is delicious, and so is the lasagna. The tiramisu is a great way to end the meal. But the service can sometimes leave a bad taste in your mouth. If coming for dinner, expect to stand at the hostess area and not be acknowledged while multiple serving staff see you standing there. The tables are really close together and if there's only 2-3 of you, there's a chance you'll end up sitting in the hallway close to the bathroom. The staff are nice, but they are too busy to be attentive.
But despite the service I will keep going to Marcello's for the food. Like some other people have noted, the food can be inconsistent, but even the crappiest meal I've had here is a lot better than other restaurants.
I love their spaghetti alla vongole and their pizzas. The smell is intoxicating as you drift by the restaurant, and I feel compelled to go in every time I'm within two blocks of the place. I haven't ordered from their wine or drinks list, nor have I tried their desserts, but I do really like their pasta. I'm especially appreciative of the fact that the spaghetti is actually al dente, unlike most places that I've been to in the city where they either overcook it or re-heat precooked pasta.
I think a lot of people in this city know this restaurant's reputation for service, which isn't great, but it's not the worst I've had.
We make it a point to dine there once a week. The frittura di calamri is a great starter & the pizzas are just awsome! Having their oven helps too! Really a great place to chill out. I find it a bit pricey; yet will not fail the weekly dine in! Wish they could sell membership!
I have lived in the Commercial Drive area for over a decade, and Marcello Pizzeria has been a regular dining spot for us all that time. The authentic wood-burning oven Napolitan style pizza is hands down the best in the city, and the pastas and gnocchi are also to die for. I think over the years I have had everything on the menu, and have not been let down yet. In a city where the big chain restaurants and their processed food are all the rage, authentic home-made food with real, quality ingredients is a refreshing alternative, which is why we love this restaurant. The atmosphere is a little hectic on weekends, but it's popular for good reason! While I have had some spotty service in the past, it has been quite solid for the past couple of years, and I've always found it to be a good value. I would (and do) recommend this place to all my friends.
Pizza at its best. Thin crust and fresh bocconcini just like you find in Italy.Tender calamari and homemade pasta with fresh ingredients ,Good wine selections. Staff is courteous and knowledgeable. Sometimes you have to wait for a table but it's worth it ! Marcello's is the only place in town I go to. Highly recommended.
In keeping with previous reviews, I'll keep this simple and straightforward - my pasta was fresh, tasty and overall very good yet the service was atrocious.
Cross the street, walk into Lombardo's and get the same food (and wicked pizza) with WAY better service. Lombardo's has a much more intimate and casual atmosphere too.
I don't know what people expect when they go out for some good italian? Marcello's is a busy, italian restaurant. They aren't going to kiss your feet when you walk in the door. I moved to Commercial about 6 months ago, I've been three times, take out another, and it's been great each and every time. My wife and I literally look around the room and wonder what people are complaining about in terms of the service, we just don't get it. They seem friendly and they're usually just trying to do their job in what can sometimes be a pretty loud and packed room.
Be patient if you can't get a table right away, it's worth the wait. Pizza and pasta is all good. Don't take yourself too seriuosly and enjoy a great meal.
Marcello's has the best Gnocchi anywhere making it well worth a visit. The atmosphere is sooo "Commercial Drive", our server, Mary, was awesome and though the place was packed, we were seated immediately. The hostess was more like a matron at a girls school, (kind of "cold") but she was efficient. Back to the Gnocchi....I ordered the Quattro Fromage (4 Cheese)...it literally melted in my mouth. A perfect blend of ingredients and so tasty, it would be easy to overeat. It's too bad other folks haven't all had as good an experience, but we will go back again and again (this was one of many visits, all good).
Ok I swore that I would never return here but......it was a Monday night and I gave in to peer pressure. The result. I absolutely stand by my initial review. This restaurant should be a prerequisite case study for all hospitality students on HOW NOT TO RUN A RESTAURANT. Specifics you say:
1. Rude greeting at the front door
2. A waiter who could not have been less caring.
3. 20 minutes wait for a bevvy???
3. Main courses that arrived 15 minutes apart. 2 members of our four member group had finished their meals before the other two meals had arrived - TIMING PEOPLE TIMING
4. No quality check - or should we say table avoidance
5. OK and I mean just OK food
A try testiment to the fact that success in the restaurant business is a truly random thing - otherwise this restaurant would have closed years ago.
Don't waste your time or money.
This was actually my first time there and oh boy, we had the probably one of the longest wait to get our food. An hour and 15 minutes! I thought the food was delicious, my friends loved it too. That might be because we were so hungry. Service is really slow. We thought it was just the weekend, that is why the service was bad or they were short of chefs/ But after reading the reviews, i see that is not the case=).
i loved the pizza, and pasta was really tasty. don't mind going again, but only go during lunch or on weekday
Why is this rest. so popular? It's aweful. Service is aweful, manager is rude, and don't worry, you will be treated poorly. There is obviously more to my review, but I previously wrote a review that got pulled off the website. Apparently honesty is NOT the best policy. I don't know how else to tell you. Don't eat here for your own safety.
After reading all the previous reviews we were somewhat concerned about our reservations at Marcello's. We were expecting terrible service, mediocre food and terrible service. Our party was completely dumbfounded after our visit as the service was OUTSTANDING. We were seated almost immediately, our waitress introduced herself within 2 minutes of our arrival, brought water within 5 and made some excellent suggestions. All in all, it was the best service we have experienced in ages. The pizza was thin, crisp and tasty. The pasta was good - not the best we have had but decent enough. The portions were more than ample as three out of four at our table took home the leftovers for lunch the following day. Our only real disappointment was that they ran out of the gelati we wanted to try. In closing, my only advice - all may not be what you read when it comes to this Commercial eatery.
I've been to this place three times and it was TERRIBLE! Time and time again the service was none existant. The third attemp was comical. We were seated but no service for a good 30 min! I made eye contact with a waitress and was totaly ignored. Even with a hand wave! The food gave me a stomach ache and I had to run home for some immediate attention in the bathroom. I would rather light my money fire before I would EVER go back there again.
The food here used to be so much better. Somewhere along the line it seemed like they switched to more industrial premade food for things like their calamari. Which, by the way, came with tatziki in a disposable paper cup.
The real problem is the service. One time the waitress brought me the wrong pasta dish and I mentioned it to her she proceded to argue with me. She spoke to me as if I were three and insisted that what she brought me what I had ordered. She offered to take it back to the kitchen so they could "put some meat in it" (my actual order had beef in it) but refused to take it back and bring me what I asked. And it is always like that.
Lunch for two on a sunny summer day at the patio, what could be more nice? Well, anything! Our waitress told us that she was really a "Ballet Teacher" and not really into this waitress thing. Well, boy, did we found out. We waited an hour on our food. The very mediocre pollo arosto arrived rather cold, but not the pizza for my husband. After another twenty minutes we mentioned that we didn't have more time and that we rather had the pizza packed for take-out. Another 15 minutes passed. Nothing, nothing. How this ended was an insult to the hospitality industry. Never again!
This is a nice looking restaurant with great ambiance and I'm guessing that's why it's usually pretty busy. The service here is notoriously bad, and the pizza... well if you're paying $24 for a pizza it better be great and unfortunately that isn't the case at Marcellos. As one my good friends would say "Marlon Blando".
