Lovely and lively old world atmosphere. 2 dozen types of authentic Naples style pizzas on the menu. Antipasta and gnocchi also recommended. Look for the eye-catching non-discrete wood burning oven in the open kitchen. Mama Mia!
We went to Marcello's on a wednesday afternoon with a 70 year old friend who has been a patron for many years. The hostess was immediately brash and unfriendly in spite of our warm greeting. She insisted the 5 of us sit at a small table for 4 near the front stating that it was the restaurant's policy to do so. A glance around the less than half full room with some groups of three sitting at large 6-8 person tables gave us all pause, and when we stated that we were uncomfortable knocking knees and blocking aisles with our arrangement she said that if we didn't have enough room she'd bring chairs for us to put our food on!
We sat that way for a few minutes and then decided to move a two person table over to ours, and a friendly server came over to help us. That is, until hostzilla saw us and said no, and our server started apologizing and saying we couldn't. It wasn't a fire hazzard, in fact we would have been more out of the way.
We asked her why she was so adamant, considering the lunch rush was over and there was plenty of room. She implied rudely that we were being unreasonable. We left after finally returning her hostile demeanour, and went directly to Lombardo's, for the same pizza from more reasonable people.
A cursory glance at these reviews should make any diner exercise their influence by avoiding this place so it goes down, which is what the rude, unreasonable, troll of a hostess deserves.
The hostess threw me out! I arrived 10 min before my 3 girlfriends for a Friday lunch (business attire, 40+ years) and the extremely rude hostess would not seat me until my friends arrived in her empty restaurant. When I complained (with attitude), she told me I was rude and unfriendly and she lectured me on her 'policy'. After some heavy-duty eye-rolling, on my part, the hostess overhead me tell my just-arrived friend that we weren't seated because we weren't ALLOWED until all our party was there. With that, she told me that I was unwelcome and told me to leave and NEVER RETURN! With PLEASURE!
The ambiance was great, the service was so-so but the food was the biggest disappointment. We used to eat regularly at Lombardo's when Marcello cooked there way back when. The pizza, calzone, focaccia, and the salad verde were heaven! We tried Marcello's a few years ago and found it disappointing. Yesterday we gave it another chance after hearing good reviews about it, but Marcello's food has really gone downhill. The pizza took 1 hour, and the crust was mostly burnt. The kalamari came with blah-tasting tzatziki in a plastic cup. The focaccia and the salad also left something to be desired. Seems like Marcello is cutting corners now that the court forced him to pay child support to his ex-wife. I'm baffled by the lineups and the glowing reviews about the food. I'm never giving Marcello's another chance. If only Vancouver had truly great pizza like Seattle's Tutta Bella.
We ate here with a group of 5 this last Tuesday night - it was packed as usual. A very cool Commercial Drive experience for out-of-towners... but the food took a long time. We had a ten-year-old with us who enjoyed watching the pizza being made in the wood oven shaped like a giant head. Food was not bad - the lasagna was decent, and the "Ai Due Formaggi" pizza was the best one we had that night. Service was a bit spotty, mainly because they are so busy. But on a summer night, it seems like the place to be....
The oven made in the shape of a face was impressive-looking initially, but we soon found that it was pretty much the only sell-point of the restaurant.
The interior was crowded; table surface was really not enough for the size of the plates.
Waitresses seemed to be deliberately avoiding eye contact; often we would spot them standing by the bar chatting. After the eye contact and waving attempts failed, I had to raise my empty glass above my head before the waitress clued in that I had wanted water for the last 30 minutes. Perhaps they thought I was being rude; I blame that on having an empty glass.
A neighbouring table that ordered an expensive bottle of wine seemed to be receiving much more attention.
Food was "on the lower side of so-so", says a crew member. We ordered two pizzas. One was burnt quite severely on one side but waitress never came by to check on us so we did not have the chance to complain until the very end.
We had asked her to pack the two slices of unburnt pizza to go, but she packed all four pieces anyhow.
As we were exiting, the collection of waitresses again failed to make eye contact; nor did they mutter the customary "thank you" as we passed by them.
We left a very small tip on the table.

I went here with friends last night, and I must say that I won't be back. Our waitress was unfriendly and unhelpful. It took 45 minutes to get our pizza, which was pretty good, but burnt. One friend ordered salad and pasta, which was ok but not worth the price.
After the last two disappointed visits, our friend insisted we go for dinner there. He and his family have been going there for years and have never had bad service so he thought we were just being senstive. Again, the service was poor, pizza was good but I've notice their pastas and appies have gone somewhat down hill. It's not disgusting but it's nothing to rave about either. My friend did approach the owner as his parents are friends with him. He mentioned that the service wasn't great and the owner said hecould care less if he came back. What a way to dig yourself into a hole.
The food is EXCELLENT. Well prepared, nicely presented and made from excellent ingredients. They layout and deco of the restaurant is great. Wine list is also very good. However, there are some serving staff problems...
The number one problem with the staff at Marcello's is that they do not grasp the idea of efficientcy. There are TONS of staff on the floor, but the people do not seem to multitask.
The second problem with the staff at Marcello's is that they do not understand the concept of hanging up your personal problems at the door when you come to work. They are not always rude, but when someone is cranky, they make it painfully obvious to their customers and seems like eachother.
As a member of the food industry, I like to observe a restauant when I visit, after my 3rd visit to Marcello's I had to write this review.
MARCELLO IF YOU ARE READING THIS TEACH YOUR STAFF TO HANDLE THEIR ATTITUDES!
For the most part the reviews for this restaurant describe the 'horrible' service. I don't know why everyone is hating on an exceptional place considering the area it's located in. Commercial Drive is far from glamourous, face it. My wife and I toured the drive one Saturday and stumbled upon Marcello's, a very appealing type of restaurant to both of us. We were promptly greeted at the door an immediately led to ur table right by the window. The food wasn't immediate as it would be expected on a Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't difficult to keep base with our server despite the restaurant nearing full capacity. We ordered a pitcher of Granville Island beer and the meat stuffed Calzone, with a large salad to share. A terrific meal, a terrific experience at a great price. $40 total and we were both stuffed. A 2 hour stay that felt like all day!! Congrats on a well rounded restaurant on an otherwise bleek stretch of road!
With all of the conflicting reviews of this restaurant, I had my doubts, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was initially disappointed by the lack of bread at the beginning of the meal (a feature at both Anton's and Anducci's), but my pasta dish was unique and quite tasty (my partner's was a little bland). The service was also much better than what I'd heard it would be, which was also nice. Sum total: a tad overpriced, but slightly above-average food and overall experience. I'll probably return in a month or two.
wow.. the moment you step into a resturant you get greeted right??? WRONG! the hostess was so rude, she ignored us.. was rude to everyone.. told us we have 1hr to finish eating cause this table is reserved for the next hr!....what the hell??? food took 45 mins to arrive... waiter was nice... in the end we stayed for two hrs. this is my 4th time there... seems like everytime we go it gets worse! and the food seems like its getting worse
I have been going for years. We go for the pizza and the caesar salad. Service is hit and miss. I have found the last few months have been better. I don't know of a better pizza in Vancouver that is similar to something you would get from Italy that is always consistent.
This restaurant wins TOP PRIZE for cosistently having the worse service. Servers do not deserve any tip whatsoever. Had one waitress argue over a refill of pop (which we never received) that she billed us for and then continued to argue over it once confronted. At least she owned up to her mistake a few minutes later but, unforutnately for her, no tip for you! ALso, had one time when we waited over an hour for food. Don't think the poor service can justify the okay food.
The service people who work here are deaf aren't they? If the food wasn't so damn good, I would never come back. I'll put up with rude servers to enjoy the food from Marcello's. Poor service = no TIP from me. To the owners of Marcello's, please teach your servers some manners, or tell them to go work some where else!
One of my first dine out experiences on Commercial Drive - admittedly on Labour Day - was far from positive experience I was hoping it to be. Having read the previous reviews, I can only add to them in saying that the ONLY reason to eat here is the pizza (the Caprese starter at $7.95 for three slices of tomato and some bits of boccocini was way too pricey) The service was pretty awful and I have to agree that any attempt to attract another servers attention (other than your own server) was openly ingnored. Maybe if this place wasn't so busy the service would have been better, but there were several dinner guests looking very unsatisfied (with comments to accompany the looks) with the service and the lengthy wait for the food to arrive. For a restaurant with 150+ covers, why on earth do they only have a pizza oven that can take 7 pizzas at a time?
Go when its quiet for the pizza, otherwise don't bother.
I have been going to Marcello's off and on for a few years with the hope that their service would improve over the years. And it never has. Yesterday was the last straw. I went in around 3:30pm. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant, so I figured the service would be adequate. I waited and waited to be seated. Just when I was about to turn around and walk out, a waitress came up to me and sat me down in a corner. Fine. It was by the window. I waited quite some time for her to come back and take my order. A little while later, I'm waiting for my salad, and this same waitress sits a drunk party of four right next to me. There is hardly anybody in this cavernous restaurant, and she has to sit these drunks next to me. And they were obnoxious. So, I got up and moved to the bar. By this time I'm really hungry and I'm still waiting for my salad which eventually comes. "here you go", my waitress says and she drops off the plate without any cutlery. "Uh, could I get some utensils, plea-" but she has already moved on. The salad was soaked in dressing, the lettuce was limp and the slice of foccaccia was cold, hard and stale. I ate what I could and pushed the plate aside. Eventually my pizza arrived. "Here you go", says the waitress as she drops off the pizza without a plate or cutlery. She didn't even ask me if I wanted another beer or anything - which I did. By this time I am really annoyed. The pizza is excellent. I finish the pizza and await my check, but it is not forthcoming. It seems the waitress has forgotten me. I get up from the bar and wait by their cash register. Finally the waitress shows up. (mind you she never asked me "how is/was everything?") She rings up my bill and I pay. I left her a very small tip. I heard her say insincerely, "thank you" but I said nothing and walked out.
I have given up on Marcello's. I will not be going back.
We visited Marcello's recently - March 23rd, 2006 - with my sister who lives very near to Commercial Drive and we were all extremely disappointed with what we were expecting to be a fantastic dining experience. We arrived and were seated after a short wait, however from there on the service was pitiful..almost embarrassing. The waitress' attitude bordered on rudeness and when she misinformed us with regards to the carafe size (volume of wine in actual carafe) - the end result was an expensive mix up for us when the bill was presented. Her attitude then changed to ..."oops"...giggle, giggle..."oh well". We waited for nearly 40 minutes for our pizza to arrive and when it did 1/4 of it was uneatable, the pastry base being as hard as cement. (Note: my husband had stepped outside during this waiting time to have a cigarette and he heard two people passing by on the street comment to one another "how terrible the service was in there". (If we had only known that before hand.....) When we finished and my husband went to pay the bill he spoke to the female manager, explaining that we have eaten in restauants all over the world and this was the worst service/food he'd ever experienced...her response was simply that "they've had wonderful reviews".....not very helpful. As we walked past the side window on our way to our car....we looked in to see the waitress and manageress both laughing....probably all the way to the Bank...at our expense and others who believe perhaps the "past reviews" that this restaurant seems to be living off of. Don't waste your time...head to Nick's Spaghetti House further down the Drive.
I found the food fantastic. I highly recomment the ?Chef Tagliatelli? pasta! Also the grilled calamari was a great start with bread. The friends really enjoyed the food. They said they will definately be returning. Service was no different than any other place of same price. Attomosphere was enjoyable. Not a place for a quite dinner out. Good for small groups of friends to enjoy great food and wine. The fact that the restuarant is always very busy means that the food is above average.
We had a reservation for 7.15PM and when a member of our party arrived at 7.20PM our table had already been given to another party. When I finally got to speak to the manager she was rude, unapologetic, and brushed me off. She told me that she had no time to talk to me and walked away; however, not before telling me that there was no use in talking to the boss because she was his girlfriend. The relevance of that comment still evades me. When asked about why our table had been given to another party, she simply said that it was HER policy to give the table up after 10 minutes and that ALL members of the party have to be present in order to be seated. I have eaten in many parts of the world and in all types of restaurants and I have never heard of such a policy. There are many Italian restaurants in Vancouver and others along Commercial Drive, so rather then experiencing poor service at Marcello's, which will probably ruin your dining experience, I recommend trying another restaurant.
When I first went to Marcello it seemed like a perfect place, excellent food very origonal the service was great, but once I went a second time the service was very poor, my friend and I reserved a table and as we arrived we found our spots had just been taken. We spoke with the waitress she replied "oh sorry wait a few minutes please we will find you a table soon". The table didn't come so we took our pizza to go. I went there about 2 more times but once again the service was no good at all. I dont think I have been back there for quite a while now but the food was excellent.
