Still the Best Pizza in Vancouver

Used to go here quite frequently but hadn't been back in a couple of years. We had a large mushroom pizza and it was superb. Thin tasty crust and obviously quality ingredients. Ask for extra sauce and cheese and you won't be disappointed
Although people always seem to bitch about the service I have never had a problem and last night it was excellent, both courteous and attentive. Will be back more often.

Why is Marcello's the way it is?

Marcello himself as well as this hostzilla written about are difficult people to work for and the turnover rate of staff is VERY high. Set aside a few longstanding servers, yours is probably new and still getting used to his/her job. The food is what it is, and the mostly Italian kitchen is unappologetic about the food it turns out, mostly good and occasionally less than so. If Marcello himself makes a pizza mistake on something going to your table it will probably take longer to fix because he will insist that it is not his mistake. As a former server I find that many people lack common sense and common decency, and half of these bad experiences reported, be it food or service, are due to the patrons themselves. It is hard to try your best and receive less than a 10% tip on a problem that was not your fault or was easily remedied, or even when everything went great! And may I say that less than 10% especially is a real slap in the face. It sends a clear message. We do try to make a living this way you know, and most of us are in school or have college degrees!

So try it for yourself. There are so many variables at each restaurant that can influence a dining experience, and rarely does your server deserve less than the standard 15% (you know in the states 20% is standard). It's hard to imagine what we do for a living unless you have held a service job, of any kind, yourself. And may I say that being treated like an animal by the "business lunch" crowd, or anyone, was the worst.

Good food, if you don't mind the wait / service

Marcellos is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Vancouver. Homemade pasta, simple ingredients.. . it's just a shame that yes, the restaurant DOES lack service.. . my best advice is that if you there on a non-busy evening, and lower your expectations when it comes to service, you can appreciate the food they serve.

Food was good and the decor is nice, but overall stick with the pizza and pasta. If the previous reviews are any indication to the attitude of the servers then don't tip them and they will hopefully learn and if not, you just saved alot of $$ to go but the next time to see if they have learned their lesson.

1. We were not allowed to sit without being counted (you have to have the exact amount of people as you reserved otherwise you are not allowed to sit and order for example drinks.)
2. You have to instruct the waiters if you want to get something done (if you need ice, or a glass of water)
3. Their wine glass is equal to 1 cup. And you get a half full glass.
4. Not to mention hair in entree and a restaurant manager who should learn to serve customers.

On the brighter side, this experience will give us something to talk about for a while. :)

I may be wrong, but this decor is something I would have watched on Restaurant Makeover on HGTV. The decor of this place is quite unique. Their brick oven is sure the spotlight of their place.
Food: I went with 3 other friends and ordered their large chef's salad. It was a bit on the salty side, since there were artichokes and olives i believe. I think the salad is a bit overpriced for the "toppings" they gave us with the greens. I vaguely remember it was $13? The large size pasta can feed 2 here, while a large can serve one at Lombardo's. Pasta is a bit better here compared to lombardo's as well.
Service: Nice servers, I'm the type that prefers servers to leave us alone after coming to check up how the food was and such. They kept coming back to refill our glasses of water, but they didn't say much. Which is a good thing!
Definitely a return!

Marcello's Good - Service Bad
By Just_Eat of vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, June 9, 2007 - 3:09pm [Dine in]

Have eaten here at least a dozen times in the past 3 years.
Have tried about 5-7 items on the menu. I often order the same 2-3 dishes. Have been going more for lunch lately.
FOOD: Consistently good. Great grilled calimari and chef's salad though price is a bit $$.
SERVICE: 3 years ago the servers we had were quite friendly and good but slow with the food - not necessarily their fault. There were a group of female servers who seemed to be there whenever we went to eat dinner. In the last year or so, I've haven't seen them again and also noticed a very high turnover of new servers; they get younger all the time, and they get less friendly and less and less efficient. Now, we won't even talk about how slow the food service is but to have to wait 20 minutes for the bill and have to ask twice is unacceptable. I am not going to put all the blame on the servers since I am a firm believer that if you have GOOD MANAGEMENT and TRAINING and TREAT your people with respect (ie be nice to them AND pay them a good wage) they will shine. I'm giving them one more chance. I will wait a month before I go back to see if the service has improved.

My boyfriend and i decided to check out Marcello's based on a friends recommendation. However, After reading some of the reviews i was a bit hesitant, but when we arrived on saturday night at Marcello's i was pleasantly surprised overall. It was very busy as most better resaurants are on a saturday night in Vancouver.
we got seated within 10 minutes since there were only 2 of us.
The waitress took a bit to get to us, but understandbly the restaurant was quiet full. Once she came over the service was fair and pretty quick overall. The pasta was so wonderfull, ( spaghetti with prawns in a garlic curry sauce) that we went back on sunday night to have the same dish! All i can say is to some of the people who werent happy with the service is that this isnt a fine dining restaurant and the expectations should be accordingly, also sunday is less busy and you can get a more personable service. We'll be back to try the pizza next!

Hit and Miss

Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 12:15am [Dine in]

I have been there over 10 times in the past year, and have stopped going in the past 3 months because I find that the food and service has gone downhill. I used to really like their pasta but the last time I went I find it wasn't as saucy as before. Service is hit and miss, mostly miss in the second half of 2006. There was one time I went with a group of 18 and service was terrible. The server almost throw a fit after one of the guests requested a smaller box for the pizza instead. The request was reasonable but the reaction from the server raises eyebrows. I will not go as often but will still give them as try in a couple of months to see if there is any improvements. I used to take business clients there but after that experience have started taking them elsewhere.

My husband and I were celebrating and decided to try Marcello's. Having seen the other reviews I really wish I had checked it out on this site first! There was no one else in the restaurant, no really, no one! We waited, the cooks saw us standing there waiting to be seated, and we waited. The waitress finally came out and seated us like it was the hugest inconvenience to her. To be fair she did "slam" down a water for each of us. I was completely shocked. The prices were moderate-high. We reviewed the menu in silence. I don't think either of us knew what to say and we "were" supposed to be celebrating right? So, we waited and waited... get the picture. I finally broke the silence and told him how horrible and terribly unwelcomed I felt. He agreed so we got up and left. I wonder if they ever even noticed? We never did get to try the food and I had to enter a rating so I went with poor. We ended up going to La Rocca where we were welcomed, the food was fabulous and the staff great. I'll never, never go back to Marcello's and I suggest that you save yourselves the time as well! Bon appetite... elsewhere!

Great Pizza is not worth the TERRIBLE Service
By fluffybunny of Burnaby (1 Review)

I have never experienced such horrendous service at a restaurant in my life - this place gets #1 spot for that. After having to pay for a mistake that our server made, we sought out the manager only to have her tell us that we were not going to get away with scamming free food (i was dressed down but I'm not looking to SCAM FREE FOOD!). Bad service, rudeness, and then being insulted? It was more than I could handle...I will NEVER go back and I will make sure to tell everyone I know to never visit this place either.

Brutal Timing and Worse Service
By bitemebaby of Kitsilano (7 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, June 19, 2006 - 3:02pm [Dine in]

Nothing will ruin your lunch faster than watching two tables who came in 20 minutes after you get served the same pizza that you ordered 25 minutes before. This is what happened to my wife and her brother today while they tried to take an hour for a nice lunch. When they complained the manager said "let's not go back in time". I kid you not. Marcello is consistently off with timing ... and my wife and I have had this problem there in the past (I almost wrote about it last time) ... but today was it for our whole family - we will not go there again and we will tell every one of our friends this story. The manager who was working (a woman) was totallyt unprofessional "do you want me to put the pizza in the oven or not" and no food is worth that kind of bad service ... especially overpriced dough with sauce and a few pieces of prociutto on it for $14. You will be hard pressed to find a restaurant in Vancouver that will treat you as badly as Marcello (based on going there about 5 times). To give you some idea of what I consider exemplary ... try Bin 942, Vij's, (The Tea House before it closed), the Zen Cafe, Savoury Island Pie Company, The Locus and Budapest. Those restaurants help set the service and food standard in our city. Marcello is the worst kind of restaurant ... stuck up staff ... with bad timing and no professionalism whatsoever. Avoid them at all costs if you don't have 2 hours to kill and don't mind being totally uncared for.

Don't Go Here

Submitted Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 5:23pm [Dine in]

If you are reading this you have probably already been here. We went for brunch on a Sunday afternoon we arrived and couldn't get brunch as we walked in 5 minutes before 2:00pm when brunch ends. We ended up having lunch with 5 in our party we ordered 3 pizza's and 2 salads. We waited over an hour to get our food. Drinks were half and hour. After being there for 2 hours we decided to speak with the manager to tell her how we were feeling. It took the manger about 10 minutes to even come and talk with us. We attempted to tell how we were feeling and she ended up insulting us. She said we needed more love at our table. She also scrapped plates at our table. This woman has no class or tact. She didn't even care that we were not happy she basically told us to leave because we were complaining. Just before we left I went to the bathroom and it was a mess there was no paper towel. I told the manger that the bathroom was a mess and there was no paper towel she told be to take my negative energy out the restaurant. I must say that I will never ever go back to this restaurant. The pizza was not very good and the ceasar salad was horrible. I can make better ceasar salad and pizza myself.

I have been going to Marcello's on and off for a few years and it's always a bit bittersweet. Either the food is off or the staff. Honestly, this place has THE worst service. And after what happend to me today i will never go again. They don't take reservations for two. When we get there they refuse to seat me b/c my friend wasn't with me b/c he was out parking the car! They won't seat you until your ENTIRE party is present! What kind of Ludicrous policy is that? How many obstacles does one have to go thru to get a seat at this restaurant? Not to mention the overly rude manager that has zero class. She made a big stink in the front of the restaurant b/c i and another patron (who also was made to wait b/c her husband hadn't shown up) asked why we had to wait! She told us that if we were regulars she would make an exception...uhhh hello if that isn't blatant favoritism i don't know what is? There food is alright, but , honestly, there are much better places to eat on the DRIVE and in the city.

Had dinner with hubby and a colleague in late September and we had caesar salad, calamari and the capriciosa pizza. I know caesar salad is safe item but when you have a really good one, it can be addictive (I actually crave the simple one from Cheesecake Factory). This caesar was okay but I wouldn't order it again. The calamari was nice and not greasy. The pizza was delicious and I really like authentic Italian style pizza - thin but not cracker thin. The toppings were a nice combo. The food is well priced. We've been here a few time and haven't encountered the poor service others mention. Ambience is simple and nice - casual.

Marcelois very cosistent. I mean, every time I go there the service is horrible and the food same old, tasteless. I try for 4 times but I gave up. The servers treat you as they are doing a favor, not as a professional. The food means nothing. I try and try, and try,but no more. I hope some owner read this and try to fix it. I'm really a pizza lover and I'd love to have lots of options.

Perfect Pizza

Submitted Friday, July 30, 2010 - 8:59am [Dine in]

Went here for dinner this week as we had another craving for a good thin crust pizza. This restaurant is not new to us, we have been here plenty of times before, but with our recent terrible experience at Incendio we were looking forward to some decent Italian fare. As there were only two of us and the place wasn't busy, we were seated right away. It was a nice evening and we were offered a table on the patio but we opted to stay inside and sit at a table by big windows instead. From the beginning, we felt that the service was quite scattered. From my observations, serving sections didn't seem to be very clearly defined and I noticed a couple of waiters criss-crossing to various sections in the restaurant with either just drinks in hand or making strictly food deliveries. It was probably close to ten minutes before we managed to grab a server's attention and bring them over to our table. Because we had already been waiting, we decided our best strategy would be to order everything at once. We ordered two salads (I chose the caprese while my husband had the caesar) and two pizzas as well as a beer for him and a half litre of red to share. The salads were up very quickly, but we were already well into eating them before our drinks were served. Again, it was a different server who brought our drinks. I've worked in the service industry before so I know that way of doing things is not uncommon. My only issue was that it felt like servers were going every which way, continually getting sidetracked, and ultimately forgetting things. Both servers were both extremely nice, however, and because of that we just coasted along with things.

Overall, the food was excellent. Both salads were decently portioned and mine had thickly cut fresh tomatoes, lots of balsamic which I love, and the perfect amount of bocconcini cheese. So good! My husband loved his caesar salad and we both commented that the warm slice of focaccia bread they topped it with was delicious. The pizzas, too, were excellent. Liking the fact that they allow you to order half-and-half pizzas, I decided to go with one half of the fungi and one half vegetarian. My husband ordered the contadina pizza which is his usual. Both were served very hot with a nice crisp and mildly smoky crust. We were suitably impressed! The pizzas, as I mentioned, are thin crust but somehow feel more substantial than similar ones we've had at other restaurants. With the salad to start, it was just too much food for me and I ended up taking a few slices home. As I said, there were definitely some service issues and the place was also very loud. I'm not sure the noise can be avoided though as it is a very open, piazza type of atmosphere. All things considered, we had a great night. This is one restaurant we will keep on our list.

This used 2 B my fave go-to Italian place on-the-Drive. However their inconsistent quality has me re-thinking my choices.

Normally, we always start with a L specialty pizza and at $25 - it should B GREAT. However on several occasions the pie came out soggy and undercooked - this is UNACCEPTABLE at this price or darn near any price

Also enjoy their calamari and pastas offerings. However these have also been somewhat suspect.

Too bad - since this used to be the standard. Maybe I'll go back to his ex-wife who runs Lombardos

SERVICE >>> I was seated quickly but served after 45 minutes. That really pissed me off because it wasn't busy. We just didn't look important enough for them to rush to serve us. Unfortunately, this also ruined the food for me.

FOOD >>> Nothing to write home about. Wasn't even authentic Italian food.

VALUE >>> Overpriced, like most Italian restaurants. Luckily, I am Italian and I cook for myself.

AMBIANCE >>> The big mouth oven thingy was cool. Bathrooms were large and clean. Airy and tastefully decorated. Solid ambiance.

The legendary Marcello treatment
By bart_weisser of Vancouver (22 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 7:37pm [Dine in]

We went on a Sunday afternoon to Marcello, hoping that our visit would dispel all the rumors about it.

After the hostess sat us down, the waitress followed our drink orders. That was the last we saw her. We thought the place was only half full, and the wait staff would have been more attentive.

Instead, for the next 30 minutes, we saw the same waitress walking up and down, chatting up with all the patrons around us, but she was seemingly oblivious to our table. Other waitresses saw us, but did not intervene. We left out of frustration.

On the way out, we brought our experience to the attention to the hostess. All we received was an insincere apology. To add insult to injury, the waitress in question was chatting with her while we left, and did nothing to alleviate the situation.

To their defense, while passing by other patrons' tables, their food did appear presentable and edible.

So we have been initiated with the Marcello treatment, and though I really hope that my bias were unfounded, my instincts (and many other's) still stand correct.
