Lovely and lively old world atmosphere. 2 dozen types of authentic Naples style pizzas on the menu. Antipasta and gnocchi also recommended. Look for the eye-catching non-discrete wood burning oven in the open kitchen. Mama Mia!
I have been there over 10 times in the past year, and have stopped going in the past 3 months because I find that the food and service has gone downhill. I used to really like their pasta but the last time I went I find it wasn't as saucy as before. Service is hit and miss, mostly miss in the second half of 2006. There was one time I went with a group of 18 and service was terrible. The server almost throw a fit after one of the guests requested a smaller box for the pizza instead. The request was reasonable but the reaction from the server raises eyebrows. I will not go as often but will still give them as try in a couple of months to see if there is any improvements. I used to take business clients there but after that experience have started taking them elsewhere.
We went on a Sunday afternoon to Marcello, hoping that our visit would dispel all the rumors about it.
After the hostess sat us down, the waitress followed our drink orders. That was the last we saw her. We thought the place was only half full, and the wait staff would have been more attentive.
Instead, for the next 30 minutes, we saw the same waitress walking up and down, chatting up with all the patrons around us, but she was seemingly oblivious to our table. Other waitresses saw us, but did not intervene. We left out of frustration.
On the way out, we brought our experience to the attention to the hostess. All we received was an insincere apology. To add insult to injury, the waitress in question was chatting with her while we left, and did nothing to alleviate the situation.
To their defense, while passing by other patrons' tables, their food did appear presentable and edible.
So we have been initiated with the Marcello treatment, and though I really hope that my bias were unfounded, my instincts (and many other's) still stand correct.
Marcello has good food but what constantly hurts this restaurant is incompetent service staff. I went there about a month ago around 5 p.m. with a friend of mine. We requested if we could sit at a larger table since we are both tall guys and needed the extra elbow room. The waitress rudely said "No, we can't do that". Now, I would understand if the restaurant had a line up and giving us a larger table would meant losing seats but the restaurant only had two other tables being occupied. Plus we weren;t planning to stay long because we had to catch a 7:00 movie. Once explaining this to her she still said "No". That shows you that this restaurant is more concerned about turning tables than trying to provide good service. Too bad for Marcello, they lost me as a customer and I can guarantee I wont be the last.
Went back to Marcello's for the first time in a few months and was impressed that the odd smell in the dining room was gone. Also the room seemed cleaner than before. The servers on shift this day were all on the ball and friendly, another improvement. As for the pizza, same good thin crust as always, now with the option of real mozzarella for a bit more money. Espresso was pulled perfectly with a nice crema. Will be back soon for more of the best pizza in the city.
This establishment had been recommended to me by a co worker, and my partner and I were excited to be trying it.
As an appetizer we had the Fried Marinated Vegetables. My first problem was that for $13.95, I didn't feel we got a very impressive spread of vegetables. We also did not find them to be overly flavorful. Somewhat disappointing, though the bread was quite delicious.
My main course was the four cheese gnocchi. While this dish looked quite impressive, the gnocchi had no texture whatsoever. The sauce was not overly flavorful either. My date had the lasagna and we felt there was nothing impressive about this dish either. The sauce had no real 'zing' to it. All and all it was kind of a bland experience. Rather expensive considering the same money somewhere else could have bought quite a meal!
The service was quite good, however, the place was quite busy and very noisy.
Used to go here quite frequently but hadn't been back in a couple of years. We had a large mushroom pizza and it was superb. Thin tasty crust and obviously quality ingredients. Ask for extra sauce and cheese and you won't be disappointed
Although people always seem to bitch about the service I have never had a problem and last night it was excellent, both courteous and attentive. Will be back more often.
Marcello himself as well as this hostzilla written about are difficult people to work for and the turnover rate of staff is VERY high. Set aside a few longstanding servers, yours is probably new and still getting used to his/her job. The food is what it is, and the mostly Italian kitchen is unappologetic about the food it turns out, mostly good and occasionally less than so. If Marcello himself makes a pizza mistake on something going to your table it will probably take longer to fix because he will insist that it is not his mistake. As a former server I find that many people lack common sense and common decency, and half of these bad experiences reported, be it food or service, are due to the patrons themselves. It is hard to try your best and receive less than a 10% tip on a problem that was not your fault or was easily remedied, or even when everything went great! And may I say that less than 10% especially is a real slap in the face. It sends a clear message. We do try to make a living this way you know, and most of us are in school or have college degrees!
So try it for yourself. There are so many variables at each restaurant that can influence a dining experience, and rarely does your server deserve less than the standard 15% (you know in the states 20% is standard). It's hard to imagine what we do for a living unless you have held a service job, of any kind, yourself. And may I say that being treated like an animal by the "business lunch" crowd, or anyone, was the worst.
Came here for dinner after deciding to pass on another restaurant on Commercial Drive (won't name names here). The room was larger than we thought (high ceilings) and a great open kitchen concept. We were greeted by a friendly, smiling face and seated right away.
We asked our server what she would suggest for pizza and pasta and she told us to get the creamy tomato sauce with mushrooms, capers and olives. For the pizza, we decided to make our own - so we had a medium pizza topped with prosciutto, mushrooms and green peppers. We also started with a Ceasar Salad.
The pizza was amazing! We thought that we'd have leftover pizza, but ended up having left over pasta. The pizza was too good to not finish. I love their thin crust and just coming out of the oven brick oven is the kicker - nice and hot! The pasta was yummy too - a great suggestion by the waitress (who was very attentive and friendly).
We'll definitely be back.
Food: I crave the pasta with mushrooms, olives, and capers. It come it a rose sauce that is perfect. I always get the large and take the leftovers to eat for lunch the next day. I have never had the pizza which I guess they are know for.
Service: They are around when we need them. Our server appoligized and did tell us she forgot to put our orders in after we finished our appy but we weren't in a rush and the food came out shortly after she informed us and it was nice and hot.
Value: Good value. We had a bottle of wine, an appy, and 2 large pastas. The bill was $80 before tip.
Ambiance: Reflects well the type of food and quality they serve.
The lasagna arrived lukewarm or uncooked. i asked for a hot piece of lasagne, but by the time it arrived, my partner was finished his meal a long time ago.
I asked why the lasagna, which contains meat, was not cooked propoerly, and after an exchange with the hostess, was told that "I wasn't listening". No offer to take the the charge off the bill. Just poor, rushed, hectic service and food a main course that should not be allowed on any dining table.
Anyway, it's too risky to eat uncooked or reheated food that may have been hanging around too long,
Marcellos is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Vancouver. Homemade pasta, simple ingredients.. . it's just a shame that yes, the restaurant DOES lack service.. . my best advice is that if you there on a non-busy evening, and lower your expectations when it comes to service, you can appreciate the food they serve.
I have been eating at Lambardo's forever so if I don't get a table here, I just walk over to the other place and visa versa. I find the food better here but the service can improve. I phone for a reservation but the person said they don't take it and there will be free tables @ 6pm anyways. I got there and it was jammed pack. Waited 15 minutes for a table. Food took some time but it was good. If it was not for the food, this place would be closed since the service can be challenging. Just don't expect too much service.
Food was good and the decor is nice, but overall stick with the pizza and pasta. If the previous reviews are any indication to the attitude of the servers then don't tip them and they will hopefully learn and if not, you just saved alot of $$ to go but the next time to see if they have learned their lesson.
1. We were not allowed to sit without being counted (you have to have the exact amount of people as you reserved otherwise you are not allowed to sit and order for example drinks.)
2. You have to instruct the waiters if you want to get something done (if you need ice, or a glass of water)
3. Their wine glass is equal to 1 cup. And you get a half full glass.
4. Not to mention hair in entree and a restaurant manager who should learn to serve customers.
On the brighter side, this experience will give us something to talk about for a while. :)
Lombardo's pizza used to be this good, but it has been comprimised. They started pile on the cheese! Marcello's Contadina pizza is the best pizza in the city. It is certainly worth the few extra bucks for an authentic Italian taste and style. It's hard to try other items on the menu because you want to stuff your pie hole with-a the best pizza pie!
Have eaten here at least a dozen times in the past 3 years.
Have tried about 5-7 items on the menu. I often order the same 2-3 dishes. Have been going more for lunch lately.
FOOD: Consistently good. Great grilled calimari and chef's salad though price is a bit $$.
SERVICE: 3 years ago the servers we had were quite friendly and good but slow with the food - not necessarily their fault. There were a group of female servers who seemed to be there whenever we went to eat dinner. In the last year or so, I've haven't seen them again and also noticed a very high turnover of new servers; they get younger all the time, and they get less friendly and less and less efficient. Now, we won't even talk about how slow the food service is but to have to wait 20 minutes for the bill and have to ask twice is unacceptable. I am not going to put all the blame on the servers since I am a firm believer that if you have GOOD MANAGEMENT and TRAINING and TREAT your people with respect (ie be nice to them AND pay them a good wage) they will shine. I'm giving them one more chance. I will wait a month before I go back to see if the service has improved.
My boyfriend and i decided to check out Marcello's based on a friends recommendation. However, After reading some of the reviews i was a bit hesitant, but when we arrived on saturday night at Marcello's i was pleasantly surprised overall. It was very busy as most better resaurants are on a saturday night in Vancouver.
we got seated within 10 minutes since there were only 2 of us.
The waitress took a bit to get to us, but understandbly the restaurant was quiet full. Once she came over the service was fair and pretty quick overall. The pasta was so wonderfull, ( spaghetti with prawns in a garlic curry sauce) that we went back on sunday night to have the same dish! All i can say is to some of the people who werent happy with the service is that this isnt a fine dining restaurant and the expectations should be accordingly, also sunday is less busy and you can get a more personable service. We'll be back to try the pizza next!
The service is so, so bad and the owner/manger just doesn't care. Why oh why do I go back, the food is good but not great. The pizza is good, but common, is is really worth the attitude for the below average wait staff. Check out Lombardo's instead, they used to be the same company. The food is just as good (great Lasagna) and you don't get the attitude, oh yeah and you get a deal since they're in the entertainment book.
I am a bit surprised with the reviews on the customer service! I have been here a many number of times over the last 6 years and never once did I receive bad service! The food, the service and the environment have always been consistently great. This time, we had pasta and did not disappoint! I would def. recommend everyone to try out for yourself and not let some of these reviews take you in the other direction!
My husband and I were celebrating and decided to try Marcello's. Having seen the other reviews I really wish I had checked it out on this site first! There was no one else in the restaurant, no really, no one! We waited, the cooks saw us standing there waiting to be seated, and we waited. The waitress finally came out and seated us like it was the hugest inconvenience to her. To be fair she did "slam" down a water for each of us. I was completely shocked. The prices were moderate-high. We reviewed the menu in silence. I don't think either of us knew what to say and we "were" supposed to be celebrating right? So, we waited and waited... get the picture. I finally broke the silence and told him how horrible and terribly unwelcomed I felt. He agreed so we got up and left. I wonder if they ever even noticed? We never did get to try the food and I had to enter a rating so I went with poor. We ended up going to La Rocca where we were welcomed, the food was fabulous and the staff great. I'll never, never go back to Marcello's and I suggest that you save yourselves the time as well! Bon appetite... elsewhere!
