Mandala Iki offers a wide range of Asian food from sushi to congee to chicken teriyaki. Brown rice sushi is a must try.
Very good feel to this place. It was busy on a late Friday night, but no waiting for us luckily. Felt very cozy and comfortable.
Servers are sort of helpful, not that friendly (but not stand-offish), but they are on top of the ball here. No complaints, they just don't make you feel like family :-)
The food? Yeah, let's talk about that. I'm not a brown rice, whole grain person. I'll eat it, but I 'm a firm believe that I'm well enough nutriated.
The scary sounding tofu fibre roll came out first. Surprisingly good. No, I wouldn't order it again (though my other half definitely would), but it was quite tasty, easily palatable. The salmon chowder wasn't so much a chowder ... but it was very fresh tasting and delicious. Good comfort food. Along came a soba salad, which was good but not outstanding. Then they finished off with a couple of highlights. The halibut cheek was very sizeable and nicely done. Given the size of the thing, it was quite a trick to make sure it wasn't over-done and stringy. Would eat it again in a snap. Also ordered a crispy artichoke roll. Yes, it was all brown rice, but WHO CARES? The taste, the texture ... my gosh, I don't recall the last time I've had such a great tasting dish. This thing was a huge innovative surprise for us in both the flavour combination and the texture. I don't think I've had a dish this innovative from _any_ restaurant in recent memory. Also had a couple of nigiri sushi, the sockeye was lip smacking good.
We would easily go again, brown rice be damned. Yeah, this thing is even better than any other white rice sushi we've had recently. (For the finicky, you have a choice, but you'd be losing out if you don't try this version).
Highly recommended, definitely worth a trip. We expect to return.
i have eaten at this place 3 times now twice take out once dine in, all times the food has been great but when i dined in the service was terrible. the servers seemed nice always smiling but did not initiate any conversation not even as much as a "hi how are you today?" or a "have you been here before?" they simply pointed at a table and threw a menu down without saying a word. and for some reason the food takes way longer to get when you dine in i waited over 20min for 2 rolls and agadashi tofu, yet when i ordered the same to go it took 12 min. so in short great food great value but take it home if you are in a rush!
I tried many sushi places in Vancouver and I hate when the food or service changes. The food has to be fresh, the service has to be reasonable. My experiences from all the restaurants has been almost always fluctuating. One of the only restaurant that always been constant, and i mean constant, is Mandala. The food is ALWAYS good. The service, same thing. And that's exactly the reason why i keep on going there, to sit and eat, or call to place a pickup order and eat amazingly fresh food. A must try is the Crispy Mango Roll :)
great food!! There are many special choices, and all great taste!!!! we have been there on a really busy weekend, but our waiter was fast ,friendly and helpful, love all the food he recommended. Was my first time tired brown sushi, the cripy mango roll, iki roll, and some other cream cheese rolls, they are delicious with brown rice, the salshimi is very fresh, and we tried some kitchen food like tom yam miso, black cod grill, herb gyoza.....it was so good!!! price is reasonable, ambiance is nice,we will definitely come back to try more stuff there!!
This is a new favourite for me. I live just a couple blocks away and I always used to pass by but never went in. Finally my husband and I were walking past and we decided we would give it a try. I'm so glad we did. The sushi is so fresh tasting and there is a wide variety of options on the menu. The brown rice is a real selling point for me. Sometimes it's hard to pull of a decent roll made of brown rice but this place is excellent. I just love it!
My husband and I have been coming here almost every week since it opened. Exceptionally good Japanese food. Must try the seaweed salad, seared tuna dishes, brown rice sushi. And must also try the Prosciutto roll. WOW! Service is great and friendly and ambiance is nice too. As much as I'd like to keep this restaurant to myself, I figured I would write this review anyway :)
A few weeks ago, I went to Mandala with some friends who told me they served brown rice sushi. That was music to my ears, so we went for lunch one day and I must say the food was delicious. Brown rice gets a bad rap for being bland and tasteless but at Mandala I could barely tell it was on my sushi. I really like the fact that all the rolls and other dishes come made with your choice of brown or white rice. Everything was really fresh and the prices are quite reasonable. I figured because it's in Kits, it would be overpriced but it really isn't. I've been thinking about it all week. I'll have to make my way back tonight.......
I love Mandala Iki. It's my favourite sushi place in Vancouver. The original is over on Broadway near McDonald, and then they opened this much larger one with a bigger menu. I now go to the Fourth Avenue location because I prefer the menu. It has a wide selection of sushi, izakaya type dishes and carefully prepared, big size, fresh stir fries. The sushi comes either with brown or white rice, but the brown is by far the best. I love the volcano roll with spicy tuna and yam fries, and their sashimi is fresh and buttery. I am also a big fan of their lunch combos, such as the teriyaki tofu or chicken with sushi rolls, soba salads and bowls of rice and miso on the side. A huge meal and terrific value for under $10. They keep expanding the specials menu and they always try to be a little more adventurous than your typical sushi joint (i.e. lobster miso soup, mango roll, crispy artichoke roll).
