Mahony & Sons is a traditional Irish pub with locations at UBC & downtown. Offering classic pub food, big patios, live music and a great atmosphere.
A good location for an Irish pub downtown and the patio with a view of the North Shore mountains makes it simply great! No wonder it's such a busy place during summer (unless of course when it rains in this city). Well, Mahony's it is for lunch this week and I ordered the fish and chips. The presentation was pretty impressive with the newspaper and of course, the food that was served on it - one piece of halibut, yam fries (optional), coleslaw, tartar sauce, and ketchup. So how does it compare to Pajo's and Dave's in Steveston? Well, it didn't come close to being my favourite. The batter was a bit soggy, and too much for my liking so after scrapping off some of the batter with my fork, I was really left with a small piece of the halibut. Well, at least the yam fries and coleslaw wasn't too bad. However, the $16 item on the lunch menu would definitely not make me rush out the office to beat the lunch crowd.
I have never really understood the whole wanabe Irish bars here in Vancouver, or maybe it’s just the concept on what they think an Irish pub is. How about we just go with an Irish theme bar instead, I think this bar fits the build.
Location: I have to admit it’s a nice piece of real-estate, and it has a really nice view. Course your going to have to pay for that nice piece of real estate, hey some one has to pay the rent right! With that said be prepared to pay a couple dollars more for the drinks and food than your average pub.
Food: What is Irish on the menu? Well let’s looks at the menu, gee absolutely nothing because all I see is a mixed bag of things. Yep Finbar Mahoney was definitely feeling pretty down after his failed career and decided to brighten his spirits with a Thai Panang Curry Chicken. I had a few dishes and found the presentation to be blah, the drinks to be watered down and over priced, beer kind of skunky CLEAN YOUR PIPES LAD, followed by more blah, blah, blah . Nothing special here, typical pub fare marketed up to make it look like something different.
You can find Pub fare else were for a lot more affordable price. I found the beef dip to be a little on the fatty side and cold, Irish sausage bangers and mash was uneventful and of kind of bland. The presentation was completely boring. Oh bangers and mash is English kids, not Irish next to the fish and chips in the newspaper. As for the Irish sausage, think they picked the lowest end they could possibly get, or maybe its Vancouver Irish sausage.
Suggestion : If you wanted to have the Irish influence go with the all day Irish breakfast fried egg, rashers, soda bread with real butter, and Ed black and white pudding, just a thought guys. Lunch try some sambos and soup.
The Service: It was pretty good no complaints there. No one was running around with there head cut off wondering what was going on. The waitress’s seem to be nice and efficient. How about those skirts!
From my view they did not do there research when it comes to the food, which it makes it all the more fake, the only thing that got going for them is the view, and for what it is worth, get a subway sandwich and a six pack of Bowen Island be marry and watch all the drunk yuppies throw there money away.
“Irish music. Irish food. Irish craic. Who knew an authentic Irish experience could be found in Vancouver?”. But an authentic Irish experience is exactly what you’ll find at Mahony & Sons Public House.
Ummmm…..what does that mean?
And who invited the Mexican to make roast chicken quesadillas if this an authentic Irish dining experience?
If you really want a traditional “pub” or “experience” rent out a smaller space guys, put in the long red leather seats, aged wood interior, complete with the old man an his dog. Have the customers come up an order, serve a couple types of local beers and some crisps.
Oh what a beautiful place. When the sun shines the views are priceless if you happen to find an outdoor seat. The food is good, the prices high but it is worth it. Their burger with mushrooms is quite juicy. I am sure it is made in house but every single time I mean to ask and every single time I forget. Like I said it is busy and there might be a wait time but the waitress will come and find you. Speaking of the waitresses and hostesses wow we are so lucky in Vancouver. There is a gelatto place and a separate pub just a minute away but neither of those has the internal or external view of Mahony. These women just rock it with those legs. Happy happy and happy (just make the burgers and brew a little cheaper will ya? lol).
