Tasty Indian food at reasonable prices.
Great ambiance and very classy settings; however, we were greatly disappointed by the food. We ordered some appetizers and two main courses - butter chicken and curry lamb, each for about $18. The portion was the tiniest I have ever seen in any Asian restaurant, not to mention the taste was merely mediocre for what is worth. We ended up spending $20 per person and still held an urge for a McDonald's after leaving the restaurant.
We had eaten previously at the original owners Surrey location previously and were impressed with the food; rich, well portioned and apparently "freshly" prepared. So when we heard that they had sold the Surrey business and moved here, we had to try it. I am not sure that the name change had to do with appeasing the Kits crowd, perhaps it was due to the current owners of the Surrey location complaining about the similar name? When we had heard of a Mahek in Vancouver, we called the Surrey location to ask where "their" new Vancouver restaurant was located - they were quick to inform that they were not connected and provided no further information.
We've had their Mint Chicken, Butter Chicken, Curried Lamb, appetizer plates, naan, etc both dine in and take out on several occasions so far, each time tasty and well prepared. The service is friendly from the owners, although a little distracted one time from an apparently new waitress.
Overall an unexciting restaurant with quite good food. The menu is everything you would predict for an Indian restaurant in Vancouver - nothing adventurous to be found here. The prices seem high compared to those reported here - most items run around $14, which adds up when you get enough dishes. Portions are fine. It seems much better as a take-out restaurant - prices come down, no waiting and the big portions pay off.
This place is awesome. The owner is very friendly and accomidating. The food is some of the best I have ever had. Sometimes the service is slow but the place just opened and sometimes they are full and sometime they are not, so staffing is difficult.
Sad they had to change there name to Cafe Mumbi to apease the Kits crowd. Guess the other residents in kits need to be told, "THIS IS AN INDIAN RESTURANT, LOOK IT SAYS MUMBAI" to goto an excellent place.
All around great.
A friend & I went here tonight. At the beginning, it didn't bode well--we were seated within 5 min but they were understaffed & not prepared for the numbers of people that kept coming in. We ordered the chicken saag, lamb vindalloo, & the bhindi do praza along with rice & naan. After waiting 25 min the food arrived--once we tasted it, both of us agreed it was totally worth the wait & lacklustre service. The saag had large tender pieces of marinated chicken breast, the bhindi do praza was well-spiced & not overdone, the lamb vindalloo was one of the best I've ever eaten--packed with flavour, perfectly cooked. Amazing. With all three dishes, you could taste the freshly ground spices; it made such a difference.
We also had lassis which were tasty and took the edge off the heat. By the end we were stuffed with no room for dessert, & had leftovers. Between the two of us, we spent about $60, well worth it since portions are generous & flavours incredible.
Apparently this is a 2nd location, the original one’s in Surrey, so maybe the slow disorganized service is part of the growing pains of expansion. I've been told the lunch deals are good, but regardless I'll definitely go back.
