The Locus on Main Street is an eatery with a funky, grunge interior serving an eclectic menu.
This place is usually always a solid choice. The food is good quality and well prepared and they have enough veggie options to keep my happy. The service is friendly, although not always prompt. I appreciate the brunches in particular, as the prices are very fair. The coffee is excellent and the atmosphere is fun/funky without trying too hard.
Didn't expect much from this place since it does look more like a funky drinking/lounge-type place, but food was worse then expected. The host acted like it was such a chore to bring us to our table.
The appetizer platter was alright, except the lamb on the lamb skewer had gone sour, tasted like it had gone bad, but the waitress just said it was the marinade? What half-decent waiter says that? Our burger was average.
It might be a fun place to have drinks, but definitely won't be returning for the food or service (or lack of it).
I went for lunch at the bar on Saturday as I felt like having someone else cook after I had cut a piece off my index finger while engaged in food prep on Friday night (2.5 hours in emergency waiting for treatment--another story).
I had the elk burger with salad and pan fries. While the bartender took my order which included holding the mayo and the cheese, the owner came over to confirm it before he put the order in. The order was not that exotic. I started with a glass off Strongbow on tap. Always nice to have something other than the usual Growers and Okanagan varieties.
After I finished my cider, I asked for a glass of their BC merlot. They did not have any. Switched to chianti. The burger was good. The salad was fresh, albeit not terribly exciting.
I ended up talking to both the owner and the head chef. The owner indicated that the menu was shifting to take into account the more sophisticated tastes of the diners. The north wall of the restaurant would be repainted. (This means that the dark and murky ambiance might change.) The chef indicated that things like kangaroo would be added to the menu. There will continue to be four to six veggies per entree.
Overall, the Locus is okay, but I am not sure whether the kitchen staff is up to more sophisticated. Aurora Bistro down the street will likely continue to be Main Street's sophisticated restaurant for the forseeable future.
The table service can be hit and miss ( I have dined here about once a month since it opened).
As for ambiance, a repaint might be nice for the very very dark walls. The bar counter has been redone. The bar stools ned some help as it appears that most of them have burst a seam or two.
Went there for dinner. It was our first visit so we asked a couple question on the menu. The waitresses were very friendly and nice to provide us the details. We ordered the Choriza pasta and tuna sandwich. Both taste good. When we ordered the dessert, the waitress even provide the details of each of the item on the list, I thought that was pretty good, and sure it made us to order one.
It was the fruit flan which taste fine, but it cost a little bit much.
Afterall, we had a good expereience there.
Me and my husband come here often and there are a couple things that we always notice; the food is always amazing, however there is always a lack of staff. We usually come in for brunch on sat or Sunday and there are only two servers, which does not seem like a lot considering the size and amount of tables each of them have. Although we love this place, the atmosphere and the food, it always seems like they are always short staffed during brunch. My husband and I like to converse and joke with our waitresses, but they simply have no time b/c they have so many tables to look after. Although we love this place we feel like there is a lack of customer service, b/c they are always short staffed. We would really like to see more of our server . I feel bad because both my husband and i were in the food industry for years and can see their frustration and stress b/c both of us have been there too. Like we said we really enjoy this place, but we would like to see some changes on the service front.
I visited the locus last Saturday night with my girlfriend late (around eleven or so) to be given some very reputable service. We were served by the bartender, who wined and dined us fabulously. After we sat down she brought menus and water, explaining the daily specials were no longer available but the desserts were certainly worth a try. We asked her reccomendation on some white wine, to which she brought us a taster of both types we inquired about. Later we requested to get a dessert, which she reccomended their vanilla mango cheesecake (wow!) and even brought my girlfriend extra berry sauce when she mentioned she loved it. all in all the service was great and we'll be back again for sure!!
Great place, one of my favorites. The first time i went for lunch i was pleasantly surprised by the unique atmosphere, music and customer base. Everything and everyone was friendly and upbeat. I ordered the tuna burger which was to die for. I was addicted. My girlfriend and I agreed to go three days later since i had been raving about it all weekend. We went for dinner this time and we we both equally impressed- again. I would definiately reccomend this place to anyone looking for a healthy, interesting place to grab a bite!
I've only ever had brunch here, but I've been lots and for years! It's always good and the coffee is delicious! What I love about this place is that it's not a greasy fry-pit but is actually quite fine with good, fresh, ripe ingredients and solid presentation. The service is sometimes a bit patchy and the owner is pleasant but always appears rushed, but overall I strongly recomment it.
I'd heard nothing but good things about Locus before I went here, and I was pretty disappointed.
Our service was okay at best, although our food came back wrong and we couldn't apparently get it customized to suit our tastes (as in, we asked for no tomato and ended up with it, twice). We had a large group and were put in tables literally across the restaurant from each other, despite making a reservation.
The food was NOT up to the hype at all. It was on the poor side of average, and we waited a fairly long time for it.
All in all, not impressed. I'm not going back.
My go-to restaurant, especially for a quick+easy brunch on Sundays! You can always count on decent service and decent food.
My boyfriend and I agree that breakfast here is WAY better than Denny's for the same price! Healthier food and a relaxed, yuppy atmosphere.
I always go back for the brunch menu and their elk burger. They had to substitute a kangaroo burger once, but it was equally delicious! Not super-duper food, but it's a unique menu and well-prepared. We just LOVE their bread + butter basket! Haven't been disappointed with their food yet!
I've been here four or five times now, and in all but one case had great food. I love the chili wrapped chicken appetizer, which has never dissapointed. The first reviewer's comment about cumin seems very odd, as in numerous meals I've never noticed much, if any, at all.
I've brought several friends & family here, and every one has had a good time & enjoyed the food.
Went here for a late night bite and drinks. Had the kangeroo burger which was very interesting. The burger was cooked perfectly, but i think kangeroo is an acquired taste. Order a pitcher of strawberry margaritas, which was awesome but a bit pricey at close to $20. The service was quite poor, it took us close to 20 minutes to get our bill.
All in all, i would probably go back...but not often.
I expected more from the buzz I've hear about this restaurant. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with avacado salsa and jalapeno cheese, it was pretty good! I really liked the mixed greens salad and the dressing was awesome. Service was pretty good, although 2 or 3 servers were helping me, I found that a bit odd? As far as the atmosphere, the grudgy and dark walls, the bizarre artwork, it isn't my thing. Even with the huge windows I just found it unnecessarily dark inside. I'll go back, but I wouldn't rave about The Locus.
I haven't been the The Locus in years and when I did I think it was always for drinks. My first time there for dinner was such a tasty surprise! Both my friend and I loved our meals (risotto and halibut sandwich), the portions were huge, the service was great, the place is beautiful, all in all a lovely evening out :)
I recently went to the Locus with a friend and had their eggs Benny special with shrimp and chorizo. The shrimp was fishy tasting and the chorizo tasted freeze dried. The meal was so bad that after eating a few bites I sent it back and my friend could not continue to eat hers either. We didn't have to pay which was nice of them but the food was not good. The service was also odd as we had 4 servers in 20 minutes.
The menu is exciting and interesting but doesn't live up to expectations.
Food lacks the subtlety you might expect from the prices and description!
But after the pitcher of Margaritas started going round things improved.
Wait staff more decorative that knowledgeable. All part of the show.
A funky outing for sure but not really worth the trouble unless you get a seat near the front and someone else is paying.
Maybe I'll get a tattoo and paint the dining room black...
Until then, I know I can go to the Locus to get that feeling.
We went to the Locus for a casual Monday late lunch. Our server seemed excited that we wanted to relax a bit and drink a lot and enjoy the view of the passengers getting off the #3 bus (seriously, best people watching ever). The food was decent, but not really out of this world. Granted we were there for drinks mostly and found that the tasting plate and baked brie suited us just fine. The decor is interesting. Overall I think of the Locus as the place to go when needing something reliable.
Wasn't busy, but the service was decent when I was there. Nice waitress took substitutions for every meal with no problems. Some how each of us got exactly what we wanted to eat. Tasty trout. Food could have been presented better, but it sure was tasty. Really neat atmosphere.
Ok first of all, This experience was some time ago, so maybe it would be better now. The food was terrible. Everything had cumin in it. Alot too. It was like the chef had just discovered it and thought it was some sort of miracle spice. Now the waitress, first of all if she was ever there. Second, there was this cup of coffee that appeared inocently enough. So I asked her very politely to remove the charge. She took the bill and brought it back. The coffee was still there. This happened again 3 times. Everytime I gave her back the bill she got even snottier. Why did she never check the bill before bringing it back. What was the problem with me asking her to take off this item we never ordered. This waitress was really nasty. Now she had dissapeared, I sure hope out of embarrassment. I told her co-waitress she was a total bitch and I would like the correct bill, and to leave. My waitress came back and told me that it was a bad idea to call her a bitch. I said why are you going to give us even worse service and over charge us more, with even worse attitude. Dont ever go here unless you want horrible food and even worse, abbusive service. If you are the owner of this establishment, stop hiring your friends / neighbors / and or waifs to staff your restaurant. Hire reputable peolpe whom will bring back business.
Another let down after promising myself not to go back there. We went as a group. Most people ordered the burger. The patties were pink. Not because it was undercooked (they were dry well done), but because they were sitting in the fridge more than 6-7 days. (Onions have such an effect in the meatballs or burgers) Any cook that lets that kind of protein out of the kitchen scares me to hell. Potatoes were burnt, like black burnt. Service was ok.
I tried this place 6-7 times. The ambience and the room is pretty decent. Other than that nothing really. I dont think i will be back.
