A Chinese bakery in East Vancouver.
Mrs C and I were buying chasiu at a nearby shop when we spotted LB. I have passed this place many times on my way to one of their competitors, but I saw a sign offering doughnuts and I couldn't resist.
The bakery was dingy and could be a lot cleaner, but the smell of tasty baked goods made up for that. They had the usual Chinese bakery stuff, but they also had things I hadn't seen at other places. For example, they had jelly doughnuts. Yes, doughnuts! And not the Chinese kind (although I like those too).
We ordered a couple of jelly doughnuts, slices of carrot cake, Italian cake, coconut delight, pineapple delight, and white cake. The 'delight' cakes were light and fluffy, and tasted like their flavour names. I wasn't crazy about the pseudo-graham cracker crust on the bottom of the cakes as it was too sweet, but the rest of the cake was good. As for the doughnuts, they were sublime, and they had coarse sugar on them instead of the powder you get at other bakeries. The carrot cake was okay, and the Italian slice was an adequate facsimile of a Napoleon, although it was a bit oily. I will be eating the white cake after this review :)
Service was great, and the server was able to explain what each cake contained. As for price, it was ridiculously cheap, and I felt guilty paying so little. Well, almost.
An okay choice when you need something new.
