The best of bistro dining

I brought my gf here for a nice summer July dinner recently. While more and more French bistros are popping up around town, this one really seemed to stand out a little more.

The space is modest yet comfortable, not relying on the showiness of the DT persona to sell itself. It is actually quite the quaint little place.

It was too easy to pick out the standouts on the menu. We started with the fabulous bisque which had little bits of lobster meat swimming in a deep full bodied blend made all the richer with the creme fraiche drizzled about. I had the soup de jour, a rich tomato and gin concoction that had just the slightest hint of the botanicals from the gin while the creaminess levelled off the edge from the tomatoes. We shared the lovely yet simple homemade country pate before settling into our entrees, my gf the incredible house jumbo ravioli stuffed with porcini mushrooms and tossed in truffle butter and peccorino - it is a dish to be ordered over and over. I went with the Margret de canard breast which was just perfect, retaining each individual layer from the crispy top layer to the fatty layer underneath to the spot on breast meat portion while the glazed apples and Calvados nicely complimented the duck. We finished off the meal with an ultimately satisfying mousse au chocolat and a great finale to an outstanding meal.

Our server for the night was friendly, mild mannered and on all night. Though he was busy waiting on other tables throughout the room, he retains his composure the moment he arrives to the table. We couldn't have asked for more.

It is exceedingly rare to have an entire meal executed so well from beginning to end, especially from a rather inelegant menu. For Le Bistro de Paris, they make simple so good and where the whole really is greater than the sum of its parts. Recommend.

This is like the Cafe de Paris used to be

We had avoided Cafe de Paris for a long time because it just didn't offer value anymore. The prices had gone up and the quality of the food had declined. Not a good combination. It was unfortunate since it used to be one of our favorites.

We were going to be in town on Saturday and my husband suggested it since he had heard that it had new owners. I'm so glad we went back to give it another try.

It was an absolutely exceptional evening. The manager recognized us from previous visits and came over to greet us and welcome us back. The owner was at the door when we came in, he told us that he had just called us at home because he thought we were late but it turns out he had written the wrong time down. Our waitress - Melanie was an absolute delight. She could not possibly be the rude waitress referred to by a previous diner. Melanie was cheerful and thoroughly professional. Throughout the evening we were treated very well with great service.

I love the ambiance of the place. It has not changed since it used to be Cafe de Paris. It feels like a nice warm French bistro (what a surprise). Tables are nicely spaced so you can have a nice private conversation. They have a 3 course set menu for $30.00 that I ordered from. My husband opted to order a la carte. I started off with the lobster bisque. It was a very generous serving of soup with plenty of lobster. My husband had a salad with mesclun greens, honeyed beets and pecan crusted goat cheese. It was really superb. The goat cheese added so much flavour to the salad. The choice of entrees on the 3 course prix fix were chicken, short ribs with pasta or salmon in bernaise sauce. I opted for the salmon. It was absolutely mouth watering, so nice and moist and the sauce complimented it nicely. My husband had the chicken with peppercorn sauce and it was also well prepared. The skin was nice and crispy but the chicken still moist. The peppercorn sauce was nice and spicy. The dinner was accompanied by french fries. For dessert we shared the creme brulee that came with my 3 course menu. It was a very generous delicious serving and easily served the 2 of us. For the quality of food, ambiance and service Le bistro de Paris offers exceptional value and we will definitely return.

Highly recommended.

After Conference Business Dinner

Had dinner here after a two day conference. Ambience is great, menu is great, service is unobtrusive but was a tad on the slow side. The waiter was a balding guy, er!? Food was excellent, and they coped well with our table of 6. But the ambiance and entertainment factor could take some work.

Poor service ruined birthday dinner and waitress tried to write her own 21 percent tip

The title says it all.

The food averaged out to solid - some of it was better than expected, some not as good as expected. The complimentary fries were piping hot but a bit on the soft side. The smoked salmon appy was the best part of the meal. My chicken was nicely done, though the sauce was bland - although the tasty garlic mashed potato made up for that. Hubby's lamb bourguignon was not bad either. The chocolate mousse had a gritty texture, meaning it was poorly done.

The value was not bad for French food - entrees range from just under 20 to around 30. The complimentary fries were a nice touch.

The ambiance is not bad - a typical bistro ambiance, but nothing high end.

Unfortunately, the service stuck out like a sore thumb, which was too bad because we went to celebrate hubby's birthday. In the online reservation, I mentioned that it was hubby's birthday. When we arrived, I told the hostess that it was hubby's birthday, but there was no acknowledgement (and the hostess wasn't that friendly either). Our waitress seemed a bit friendlier (at first), but was extremely slow and inefficient. There were long waits (up to half an hour) between our courses (after they had cleared the dishes for that course) - our neighboring table also complained about the long waits. Our waitress didn't do much about that - she just paced back and forth for no good reason around the bar area. When we ordered dessert, I asked if she could put a candle in the dessert because it was hubby's birthday and she said yes. Dessert came (after another long wait) - no candle, not even a happy birthday. After dessert got cleared, we had to wait a long time to get the bill, and when it finally arrived I was shocked. The waitress had handwritten a 21 percent tip for herself - that's 21 percent of the after-HST price! Needless to say, I crossed out the tip amount and gave a much lower tip (still more than she deserved) and wrote on the bill my reasons for such a low tip: the rudeness of writing a tip for herself, the extremely slow service, and the lack of even verbal acknowledgement of a birthday even when asked several times.

If it weren't for the poor service, I would have wanted to go back to try some of the other dishes. Since there are so many other restaurants in Vancouver and enough French restaurants with much better service, we will not be returning.

Not French-style cooking at all

First time at Le Bistro de Paris last night for the Dine out menu. It was $38, for 3 course menu. But surprise to find in their menu, 3 course menu for $30. So I ordered the escargot with puff pastry, filet mignon, and the apple tart. The escargot puff pastry came out as a tasteless, lack of seasoning, and the puff pastry...not puff at all, it was like a burnt saltine cracker. They tried to hide the burnt part by facing it down. The filet mignon was okay, not great. The apple tart, turned fruit tart...it was not good. I also ordered the beef tartare for additional appetizer, it never came, I didn't bother to even follow up, by the time I had the first dish, I was scared to tried other food from the place. The iced tea that we ordered, was a pale yellow color sugary substance. Overall, not impressed, there was no French-cooking skills in this restaurant. Very disappointed.

Me and my fiancee were in the mood for some French cuisine, though after reading the previous review here we nearly decided skip on the bistro de paris to go elsewhere. Good thing we gave this place a chance as it turned out to be great experience!

Food was incredible, the service was gracious and perfect. We were under a bit of time pressure as we had a show to catch, but the waiter made sure everything arrived on time and in perfect order.

We went for the $30, 3-course deal they had on special that day. It was an incredible value in my opinion, all considered. We both started with the escargot de provence, which were delicious, hearty and bursting with flavour. The fish du jour as tuna with spicy mango sauce and came in a masterfully arranged plate and was to die for. Our deserts - creme brule and chocolate mousse were scrumptious.

A wonderful bonus, they give you complimentary fries with your order, which were some of the best fries I have ever had!

Great experience, we will definitely be coming back for more!
