Under new ownership since 1994, the long standing Kitsilano dining institution attracts many faithful diners with it's Cantina-style look and menu. Las Margaritas has rebuilt and expanded their 60 seat patio which has been voted one of the best in Vancouver.
At Las Margaritas you'll find what's been called the city's best salsa and margaritas, as well as the largest tequila selection in B.C.
Simple, good pleasures are hard to find. The beers are always cold and the food is always good, especially the Jalapeno Poppers. Not sure if it's authenitc Spanish/Mexican Fare, but who cares? I've been going there for years now and yet to be disappointed. My only issues are the plates (sometimes) being scorching hot and the line ups. If they could only do something about waiting 45 minutes!!
Let me preface this by saying I live about 2 blocks from Las Margaritas and although I've handed out 3's across the board I do find myself going fairly often it seems so there must be something. What I wanted to note is that my friends and I have notice a marked improvement in the food at Las Margaritas in the last few months. Previously I was not a fan but for some reason everything for the salsa to the entrees seems to have taken on a more authentic Mexican flavour of late. Food across the board has gone up a star in my books and I now find my self wanting to go instead of going by default of proximity
"We had an unpleasant experience at Las Margaritas last night. We were seated in a table next to the bar and had a waitress who served us all night and she appeared friendly.
We ended giving her a 14% tip. I think this is about normal but the waitress came by and started to give us a speech about how our tip was far less than what she deserved. We found her attitude to be condescending and tasteless. All that friendliness she displayed now appeared contrived and was largely dependent upon a tip far greater than what we had offered. There was no reason for her to engage is such a lengthy dialogue to tell us we badly underpaid her tip.
The food and the atmosphere are really good. After going there a few times I have realized that its one of those places that you like but often falls second place to another option. The food is really good depending on what you order. Some of it lacks flavor but overall i have had 4 really good experiences. Service can get slow when its busy and for myself its not a place i would wait in line for unless i was really craving it or never had it. Portions are really good and will fill you up and food is always hot and fresh. if you havent been here i highly recommend you try it.
Las Margaritas was pretty cool when I was in my early 20's and didn't know any better. The food tastes exactly the same as it did then -- probably because most of it seems to come out of a can.
I agree with the majority of the other "reviewers" regarding the service. Stop "posing" and acting like the gods/godesses that you aren't!
For better mexican: try Mouse and Bean, Mexi-cali, the place in the Granville Island Market or make it yourself. (Now that I think of it -- the food from this place screams Old 'el Paso leftovers!)
The deck is good, so if you're going for some drinks after work -- the nachos might prevent a hangover.
Wow -- I really used to love the place :(
This place is not authentic by any means, so if that's what you're looking for this is not for you. But if you do want pretty good tex mx, it's really not bad. Although, $2.25 for a small wicker basket of chips and salsa is very, very unreasonable. The steak fajitas are my regular order and other than needing salt they're not bad, but they really should add cheese. Service is different everytime we go, it's never outstanding, sometimes bad, but usually average. Use the entertainment coupon it softens the blow.
The Mexican food served here is absolutely great with fresh ingredients; I have never sent anything back…Walk in the door; always get a friendly greeting, complimentary chips and salsa to start… A lot of the dishes are topped off with different sauces; we usually ask for all the toppings on the side so the soft shell doesn’t get “soggy”…..best to have reservations as they get pretty busy for lunch/dinner. Will be back.
I've been here several times and this place serves some really good food and I've always had a pleasant experience here. As a vegetarian, I am quite limited in my selections at most restaurants, but this place offers a few vegetarian options. The burrito is my favourite thing here. And the salsa and chips are just really delicious. For the margaritas, the raspberry one is quite sour but I really enjoyed the mango one. I had a virgin mango one, and personally I like their virgin ones better.
The service is usually pretty good here. It can get quite busy in the evening though. The ambiance is nice too. Not bad, but not amazing.
The young male server, maybe there's more than one, you know who you are, is rude and grouchy and goes out of his way to make you feel uncomfortable. Too bad that the food is fairly decent, though I wouldn't call it mexican per se, and the prices are good, but the servers are rude and the hostesses haven't got a clue about anything, period.
I like this place for a casual Mexican experience. The Margaritas are excellent, the food has great value and the service, while it is the weakest point, is solid. I've always managed to leave satisfied. I will be back.
