Under new ownership since 1994, the long standing Kitsilano dining institution attracts many faithful diners with it's Cantina-style look and menu. Las Margaritas has rebuilt and expanded their 60 seat patio which has been voted one of the best in Vancouver.
At Las Margaritas you'll find what's been called the city's best salsa and margaritas, as well as the largest tequila selection in B.C.
If they could make this place even a little better it could make a big difference. The staff are all early 20's (or so it seems) and care more about their own night's plans than the service they give. The drinks are OK, nothing to write home about. I live close and would love if they could improve this place, the patio is great in the summer and if the drinks weren't so bloody overpriced I would visit much more often. Food is good.
Jaz was in town and she loves Mexican, so a bunch of us hit Las Margaritas in Kits and got our nacho on.
This place has been around forever, and I get here probably about twice a year. So whatever 2 X forever equals is how many times I've eaten here.
It's always a good vibe here: the walls are an eclectic mix of Mexican kitsch, the lighting is just right, and the place is always bustling. (Seriously, this has to be one of the most steadily busy restaurants in Vancouver.)
In the summer, they have one of the best non-view patios in the city!
All the appys are pretty good: we sampled the house nachos, nachos locos and mini-chimis. All delicious.
Jaz had the combo #3 for her entree (burrito & enchilada) - enjoyed it but couldn't finish the rice and beans.
Just too filling.
I went for the hard shell taco dish and it was excellent. Not the most flavourful I've had, but solid and satisfying.
Did I mention the frozen, slushy margaritas which are the best in the city?
So awesome, and don't be shy about combining flavours.
Parking's not great, and watch out for that horrible 4th & Maple intersection, but overall this is an old standby that is living up to its legend.
Fun place for small groups and/or out of town guests.
Was going to order the halibut tacos but my eyes were bigger than my stomach and ordered a beef/chicken taco/burrito combo instead. Everything we ordered was ridiculously salty - perhaps to cover the fact that the chicken and beef was dry, but the same went for all the other items on the plate - refried beans, chile rellenos, rice. Mentioned it to the server who said, "Yeah, we get that a lot."
Authentic Mexican this is not! If you want something fresh tasting, that takes you back to that vacation in Los Cabos etc, you are better off going to La Taqueria downtown but sadly they are a mostly take-out joint.
Other than that the drinks are great, the service is adequate, and the patio is hopping on any sunny afternoon. Is good value because they have an Entertainment Book coupon. I would recommend this place for drinks and appies but based on my experience with the entrees... meh.
On my most recent visits to this restaurant I ordered a salmon burrito ($14.50) and combo number 7 ($14.50) The salmon burrito is explains itself and combo number 7 is a veggie burrito with chiles rellenos, which is basically chile peppers inside a egg batter. Out of these two dishes that I got, the salmon burrito was so much better but combo number 7 filled my stomach more. For the next ten times I go, I will order the salmon burrito because it was so good. A nice thing about Las Margaritas is the all you can eat chips and salsa for free which I totally took advantage of. Anyway, to conclude this review, I would say is a mexican restaurant in Vancouver with a good atmosphere and good food for families although I could probably walk through Vancouver and find better Mexican restaurants than this but the main point is that this is a reliable restaurant and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.
I'm stunned by some of the poor reviews here. I've been to this restaurant a few dozen times over several years and I've always had a good experience. I can't comment how "authentic" the food is but I've ordered several menu items that have always been fresh/hot and tasty. Great guacamole and salsas. Certainly much better than the taco places at the malls which I think someone compared this to. The ambiance is fantastic, I've always found the servers friendly, and the patio is one of the best. The food is not inexpensive but you're also paying for the ambiance and the location (rents in Kitsilano aren't cheap). Do try the fajitas which are brought to the table on a sizzling hot plate. YUM!
Went to LM yesterday afternoon for lunch. The restaurant was half full, so two of us were comfortably seated prompty towards the back of the restaurant.
The meal started with free nacho chips and salsa, which were both delicious! Nachos and salsa seemed fresh.
I ordered the chimichanga and my friend had the 2 tacos, which were both served with mexican rice and refried beans. Overall, we were both satisfied with our meals. The tacos seemed kind of plain, maybe only 1 step above Taco Time or Taco Del Mar. The chimichanga was quite good, but probably not worth the $15 price.
We both left extremely stuffed. Ps. Try the strawberry margarita... delicious!
Would definitely go here again, especially in the summer time...the ambiance in this place is great in the summer, but get ready to wait in line!!
The food was bland and boring. The slop that they call refried beans would be likened to a jar of Heinz baby food. There was nothing good about this place. No one at our table would ever return to this retaurant. We waited an hour to be seated and even though I was pretty hungry by the time we got our food I could not eat it. Very very over priced for what you get. There was no guacamole or salsa sauce served with the tacos. A little bit of sliced iceburg lettuce tomatoes with more refried bean slop.
The food was bland and boring. The slop that they call refried beans would be likened to a jar of Heinz baby food. There was nothing good about this place. I think of spice and garlice and flavor when I think of Mexican, there was absolutely no flavor to the food at all. I recommend almost anywhere but this place.
I've been to Mexico a million times and Las Marg's is my hometown substitute for when I can't get away. I LOVE Las Margaritas. I was just there last weekend and the food was great. The homemade salsa and chips can't be beat. I ordered the burrito and it came with beans and rice. I also had a peach margarita but it was a bit on the sweet side. Next time I'll have lime.
The service was solid. I would like to say outstanding but in reality they are not falling all over you here. It's neither great nor terrible. Some people judge by the "water glass test" and I was never empty.
The ambiance is awesome. When the patio is open and the music is playing you can just imagine having a bite to eat before heading back to a warm sandy beach. If you don't like it well I suggest you don't visit the real deal.
Definitely coming back again soon.
I visited with two friends on a Thursday night, wait for a table was about 40 minutes. There is a great culture and vibe here that is nice to take in.
We had a pitcher of Pina Colada ($29) which produced 6 full glasses in total; definitely a good buy. The Chimichangas were huge, very meaty with lots of sauce. Outstanding fresh guacamole. The portions were generous with the perfect amount of mexican rice & refried beans (also both very good). You cant find any food like this in the city, definitely a great place for a night out but make a reservation!
It had been my third time visiting Las Margaritas as an average Mexican restaurant near Kitsilano area.
I loved this restaurant because of the decent food cooked and the surrounding atmosphere. I ordered spicy wings ($8.85) as an appetizer and chimichanga ($15.05) as al la carte. The food wasn't that bad, but I had to wait 20minutes to get my appetizer and another 20 minutes for the main course. Although I was the third customer in the restaurant, I had to wait for a long time. The server didn't tell it would take quite a bit of time to cook food and was trying to avoid taking orders from customers.
The atmosphere of the restaurant had decorations of The Day of the Dead when I went there. Also, the entire interior of the restaurant was decorated with traditional Mexican style. Mexican traditional music was really loud so I couldn't hear myself think while eating the food. Yet, the sound made the decorative look better.
Value of my food was excellent for the main course which was (chimichanga) $15.05. Cooked chicken was filled in the burrito and there was bean paste as a side dish. Starter compared to chimichanga was not the right price because it was $8.85 for ten small chicken legs. A lot of spices were added into the food, yet they weren't hot.
I would recommend Las Margaritas to people who are eating Mexican cuisine for the first time in Vancouver. It has fair food and service although customers have to wait up to 40 minutes during the peak time. This restaurant might be hard coming as family because there isn't a good menu for children.
Las Margaritas is known for its authentic Mexican dining experience. The restaurant has an assortment of Mexican dishes to choose from to satisfy your cravings. The prices are fair, ranging from $6.00-$30.00. The service is great, however the restaurant can get very busy during peak hours. The traditional Mexican decor adds to your dining experience. The restaurant is decorated with authentic Mexican artwork and furniture accompanied with traditional Mexican music. During my visit to Las Margaritas, the restaurant was fully accessorized with Day of the Dead decorations. Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican celebration. In conclusion, Las Margaritas is an excellent restaurant and I would recommend it to anyone craving some delicious Mexican food!
After many visits to this establishment i must say that the new owner has greeded me on each and every visit my wife and i have gone there.
After being seated we are offered chips and salsa gratis and order a pitcher of the house Sangria. The place is jumping and the owner manager is seating and busing tables like a pro. The front of the house staff move to the beat of his drum. Non wasted steps is the key to an efficient wait staff, and it shows here. Every time a table empties it is soon populated in short order!
The Mexican food served here is tried and true with good fresh main engredients in any menu item i have ever orderd. Western themed Mexican food is often very mediocre and inconsitant. Here Las Margaritas the food in bonus notchas ahead. Several of the starters such as the Tortia Soup and the fish tacos are done well with good flavours. The burritos and other soft tortia items are stuffed with good tasting beef, chicken ,pork or seafoods. The sauces are flavourful and show good workmanship from the kitchen.
Just about every meal I have had here has been good enough to make me want to come back. Over the last 15 years i've noticed the place even though old is still well taking care of. The floors and walls are clean. The areas above the tables are dusted on regular bases. The service wear is spotless and the cooks that make appearances from time to time from the kitchen are well groomed and look relaxed even when the restaurant is full house. The libations from the bar contain well blended premixes, the limes and lemons that were cut minutes ago and not days ago like most bars serve make the drink more appealing to me. I spend my dine out dollar wisely and on so many occasions have been dissapointed at simular eateries. Las Margariats has kept my attention for over a decade and a half and I am looking forward to my next visit to a place that is dependable, reliable and steadfast! OLE'
I have been coming to Las Margaritas for years (sigh- about 15, yikes). I try and get there at least twice a year. I've come in small groups and in large. I have NEVER had a bad experience at this restaurant. I will say that the hostess staff has changed over the years-sometimes you get someone keen on customer service, and sometimes you don't. There can be a long wait sometimes as well. If you are wanting a table around 6pm on a weekend, come early! I've tried different items on the menu over the years, and all have been good, but my favorite is the salmon pesto burrito. It's baked with sauce and cheese. It comes with a small salad and black beans with feta. I will agree that sometimes the margaritas taste virgin, but trust me, after 2 you realize there is plenty of alcohol in them. I also love the salsa here too, and have even come by to get take out of just the salsa. I've never had a problem with the wait staff- they have always been helpful and quick. As for the atmosphere, it's meant to feel like a cantina, and has always seemed clean to me. It may not be "authentic" Mexican, but it's better than the Mexican I had in old town in San Diego, so that's saying something!
This restaurant is always a family favorite in our house. It was a family restaurant back when it was hard to find a place to take everyone for a decent meal. The menu is predictable and nothing particularly special but it has a nice vibe and is always noisy and full of energy. Not a romantic tryst but a comfy sweater.
Haven't tried anything off the menu which was awful just a little sameo sameo. Highly recommend that you try the Fiesta Platter - often this is enough for the whole family with an extra order of quesadilla. Worth waiting in line and a great place to take the gang for a birthday. Great patio.
My friend and I ventured out to Las Margaritas last night from North Vancouver. When we first arrived, it looked extremely busy and we didn't think we would get a table. We had a choice to sit inside or outside and with the amount of noise inside, we chose outside. After only a 15 minute wait we were seated at a small table against the wall. There were tons of other people around but it seemed very private and cosy. Our waitress came over within about 5 minutes to take our drink orders (I had a large mango margarita and my friend had a "blue"). I'm actually surprised at the reviews about the margaritas not being strong enough because HOLY mine was strong! After about 10 minutes she came back and took out food orders. I was going to have the veggie burrito, but decided on the halibut tacos that were on the specials menu, and my friend had the enchilada suiza. Food came very quickly and I was eager to dig in. I wasn't too pleased with the tacos, they were a bit bland and the halibut was a bit dry. I did have a bite of my friends and WOW that was yummy!! Definitely nice, authentic mexican food and the flavors were amazing. I definitely won't be having the tacos again though. Overall I was very pleased with everything. Service I would have to say would be my least favorite about the restaurant. Our server was very nice, but it was almost like she wasn't paying attention and not too friendly on the chit chat. I will definitely be coming back here again!
Hadn't been back to Las Margaritas for a long time, probably 6 years or so. I always thought they were a bit on the pricey side. But in search for a Vancouver Friday patio after work, we braved the lineup (50 minutes at least) and got a prime spot on the deck.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. I remembered them as having good food, but had found other Mexican alternatives with better food at a better price. With some of those alternatives (Topanga's) raising their prices and shrinking their portions, I was quite happy with the LM experience. Good food, average prices but we had a good time eating and drinking into the warm Kits evening.
Will go back. Surprised to see as many medium to poor reviews here. Will see when I go back how it goes.
Went to this restaurant with five other family members and could not hear a word that they were saying. The noise level from blasting music, loud patrons and traffic was overwhelming. The food was horrible, I ordered chicken enchiladas and they were dry and overcooked. The whipped cream on my chocolate cake was sour. The only positive note was our server, she was prompt and friendly. I can't recommend this to anyone.
My first impression of the decor of the restaurant was that it was comfy/ warm atmosphere. When we were seated by the server and served warm and very yummy nacho chips & salsa, I realized that the background music was a bit loud for my liking. This is the first time I've ever visited and it was definitely quite busy by the early evening.
I ordered the Enchilada and my boyfriend ordered the LA Burrito. One of my enchilada had chicken filling while the other had ground beef. I thought they were pretty good but the rice was average... and the refried beans were "paste-like." Our server was very attentive throughout the whole time we were there.... always coming back to refill our water glasses, ask how we were doing... and food was brought back very promptly. The portions were very big!
Overall, the food was average but the service was very good. We ended up using our Entertainment coupon for the food so we paid about $14+tips for our dinner when it was supposed to be close to 28+tips. Not bad but I think I need a break from Mexican food so we may be back in the near future!
This place is always bustling with people. The menu has so much to choose from and the food is always good. I love the enchilada suiza and their nachos. The margaritas are really good as well.
The only thing that they need to change is the hispanic bartender who's always there and looking absolutely miserable. Everytime I wait at the bar for a drink, he's completely aloof, unattentive, never smiles and if looks could kill he would kill someone. I go there atleast once every month or so and always see him. It's the most annoying thing, half the time he ignores you and when he does finally acknowledge you, it's like he's in a hurry and doing you a favor. Absolutely Ridiculous!
