My cousin had her wedding last month and had ordered cupcakes for their wedding instead of the traditional wedding cake. It was wonderful!! So I decided to check out Kreation for myself. Located on Cambie and 17th. Nice little shop and had a cozy feeling when we walked in.
They had cupcakes and other cakes display. I decided to order 6 cupcakes. 2 raspberry chocolates, 2 hazelnut vanilla, 1 passionfruit and 1 strawberry cupcakes. Man, was it ever good!!! So much better than Cupcakes on W. Broadway. Not overly sweet, which is what I like, so you can really taste the flavour of the fruits. My favorite is the hazelnut vanilla. Its the same price as Cupcakes, but I rather come here for my cupcake craving anytime.
Now, if I can only convince my hubby to order my birthday cake here.
Dropped in here because I had always passed by before and wondered how the cupcakes were... Usually they were closed when I walked by, but couple days ago they were just near closing so I walked in to try some of their cakes..... I wish they had been closed so I could have saved my ~$15...
Food: I bought the brownie, the raspberry cupcake, the madeline and the green tea cake. The brownie and madeline were average, not worth the $2.50 while the green tea cake was slightly better....but still not worth $5. The raspberry cupcake was the best overall, and at a fair size (hence the $2.50 tag isn't too hard to swallow). However, none stood out as amazing or even really that good.
Service: This is why I won't go back. The older asian lady who was there did not greet me until I had greeted her and seemed indifferent when I asked her about the desserts. I was surprised as usually the workers at these kind of smaller bakeries are more than willing to share their enthusiasm for the products (often times made by them themselves). She ended the transaction by saying "okay" while handing me my cakes.... not offering a bag or anything, so I had to hold a box and a small cheap paper pouch along with my bag and coffee.... thanks for thinking of my convenience... NOT. Even a curt "have a good day" or a simple "thanks" would be the usual way to end a transaction, particularly in a area where businesses have been affected (cambie construction), you would think repeat customers is what a good merchant would want... I guess not for this store.
Value: Poor, as the product (cakes) are not worth the prices in taste/quality, while the service is also subpar.
Ambiance: Clean and neat, a little sparse but there's limited space so I guess they are trying their best.
All in all, I wouldn't go back and I wouldn't recommend it to a friend. It's not really worth trying at all. I would much rather go to Sweet-E's bakery in kerrisdale or even Sweet Obsessions.
In the mood for a take-out dessert and having heard about this place (lucky I knew the block because the signage is minimal and I've driven right by it in the past despite actually scanning the street for it - get a big sign Mr Manager!) we popped in for some cupcakes.
The honey buttercream on vanilla cake was $2 for one that was average, I guess, but could have been a bit bigger. It was good, but nothing to rave about. The $2.50 for same size raspberry icing with chocolate cake was really good. The icing is very creamy and fruity without any of the sickly sweet and sugary flavour of most icings. Pay the extra $.50 and get this one!
Service and ambiance were fine for what is essentially a take-out bakery. I think the value is okay, but next time I'd try a tart or something else that looked really good and better priced for what you're getting. You can make cupcakes this good at home if you're a decent baker, but one of the more complicated tarts or cakes that are about $5 or $6 would hold better value.
