Formerly Hennessey Dining Lounge, The Kozmik Zoo hosts a wide range of entertainment from Jazz, Rock, Reggae and Classical and offers an eclectic menu featuring a selection of organic and local cuisine.
Came here for a friend's bday for some drinks.
Food: Didnt have any food but drinks were standard. Nothing that really stood out.
Service: Awful is all I can say. Our waitress/server never came around. Lounge was less than 1/2 full. She took forever to get us our drinks. Ppl that joined our group after we ordered our drinks got theirs much faster at the bar...infact, some of them had multiple drinks before our came. And when she brought the drinks she had no idea whom they were for nor cared to find out. She had a really bad attitude problem. I saw her trying to open a bottle of wine for like 10min. It looked really embarrassing b/c the couple was trying to have "romantic" glass of wine and she just could not open the damned thing! Later she brought a bunch of drinks on a tray walking by one of our chairs knocking over my g/f's jacket and stepping thru it! then kicked another chair out of the way. And when i say "kicked" I mean kicked! Not pushed aside. My b/f asked to settle his tab, she never came back w/ it. He had to hunt her down himself!! Other ppl in our group had negative comments to make about her in terms of her poor and slow service and bad attitude.
Ambiance: nice enough inside. I think it has a lot of potential. it's suppose to be a lounge...no real dance floor...and they put the strobe ball on...that kind of confused me. it's kind distracting for ppl just wanting to sit down for some drinks...a little difficult to talk over the loud music too.
Overall: The bad service from this one person really made a strong negative first impression on me. Really doesnt incline me to want to return, however, I know this is one experience, it's just too bad it's also the first one. If I were invited to another function here I def wouldnt turn it down b/c of the location, but I do hope the next time I will encounter better service.
With the music is blasting, it gives off the night clubbing vibe but w/o the dance floor tho there's the little live music performance stage. The Asian servers seem to be absorbed in their own little world. It was full of young'uns last Friday night. There were a couple of large parties, one of which was obviously a bday celebration. There were kids who just came out of the lounge & hanging around outside when we entered. They appeared to be under the legal drinking age. Who knows what the reality of it is, but the place did give the sense that it's cool for those too young still to sneak into a club to party here. Too young & too casual & what little food we had was just not good enough.
The chocolate cake was actually pretty good, however, the Chai tiramisu was just horrid. Didn't bother trying to work through it. The yam fries were quite greasy & limp, but dipped in the mayo, it's tasty enough to act as coating in the stomach for the cocktails we consumed--a little too watered down for my taste, but still alright, I suppose.
The mens room is too cramped to make it comfortable for anything but a single use room. Anyone using the urinal will be in the way of whoever wants to use the stall. Also, anyone trying to swing the door open would smack the guy occupying the urinal. As for the womens room, there are 2 filthy stalls w/ too much condensation dripping off the sides of the toilet bowl & the flusher not working all that well as one stall had the water running constantly like a never ending flush that still managed to keep the toilet paper where it shouldn't be. I guess they didn't spend much on installing better plumbing & redesigning the restrooms in general. I'm just sorry I had to use it at all.
Will not be returning, but will recommend to high school kids looking for a place to hang w/ friends since they wouldn't mind shouting across to each other or just get lost in their own little world w/ the person sitting right next to them.
After reading some reviews on here and seeing the website, I was excited to try out this new lounge. Not paying much attention to the address, I was a little surprise at the area it's in. West Broadway just after Main. Seemed a little out of place for a lounge - but a plus for free parking!
The website gave the impression of a large fancy establishment. Although very cozy and comfortable, it was pretty small and casual. I felt a little over-dressed since some were in stained jeans and untucked plaid button-up watching the hockey game. And even though this is a new restaurant, the washroom were less than pleasing (looked old and dirty).
We ordered quite a bit. I was torn on how to rate the food. We ordered tuna tataki w/ wonton wrappers - seared tuna was ice cold. Ordered the duck springroll - really greasy with no sign of duck, we also ordered the yam fries w/ peanut sauce. Really good taste, but again extremely greasy and not at all crispy. Our fingers were covered in oil. It was like a sign of inexperienced chefs. I'm not close to to being a chef, but I still know that deep frying in oil that's not hot enough will yield greasy foods - this was probably the case. Our mains were not much better. Girlfriend K could not finish her salmon - usually her favorite. It was too fishy tasting and the sauce was completely wrong. I would have given the food a 1 rating - but I have to consider how great the drinks were, especially the "RVSP". The matcha creme brulee must be mentioned also, it had great matcha flavor.
Service was excellent, but sometimes I didn't get our server's dry sarcasm. I would definitely come back for drinks, but I will make sure to have dinner beforehand.
Driving past this place for a long time I had no idea it was a lounge and since it's always good to add a few more places like this to my list I gave it a try one day and have since come here a handful of times more than I should of.
They have a small tapas menu alongside a short list of burgers and a couple of pasta pieces. It seems they want you to come here for the drinks and I'm not surprised. Their Steak & Chicken Nachos consisted of a dozen or so medium tortilla chips plated neatly with a small helping of toppings with a piece of meat on each piece. Their 3 of a Kind Pasta on a plate was cute on paper but plain on taste and is nothing more than a few bites. I've had a few other dishes but were completely not worth the thought.
Drinks are only OK. The girlfriend and I usually order Cocktails or Martinis but they seem to have different bartenders on hand and have gotten inconsistent results ranging from poor to decent at best.
They have Improv on Sundays at 9pm and were once asked (either an employee for Hennessey or part of the Improv) if we wanted to stay as it would cost $5/person to watch it live. Luckily we were finishing up our meal and declined, and for the better. We managed to catch the first 15 minutes or so and it was lame, with the stage performers shooting out expletives left, right and center to make up for their hurting material.
Servers disappear into the kitchen or if they're on the floor they seem impossible to flag down and give the impression that they are ignoring tables. It took us a good 20 minutes to get a waitress to deliver our bill. Please.
Decor is nice with some comfortable seating areas and a tiny area for the live DJ or stage performances by local artists. It's loud and somewhat echoey unless there's hardly any patrons inside.
This is a "worse than bar" type establishment masked as a more upscale lounge using their desperate attempts of selling you on their "organic" menu. Food is decent but they seem to think that reducing dishes to rabbit food portions while keeping prices the same as a model for being "upscale" is laughable. Hard to find anything positive to write about this place. Pass.
We dropped by Hennessey a couple weeks ago for some lounging and snacking.
Since it was later, we were offered the late night menu which is quite limited (I would have *really* liked to see what their flautas were like).
Drinks were ok, although the menu itself was limited as well for a lounge. Service was questionable. Our first waitress disappeared after taking a couple orders. Our second waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and apolegetic for her colleagues' shortcomings.
Value? Value was poor. They served some 99 cents worth of nachos for ten times that! The yam fries was also "skinny girl size" and out of their limited menu, the chicken bites weren't available.
Hennessey thinks it is a club, but they've branded themselves as a lounge - they need to amp up their menu, tone down the music (waaaay to loud to carry on a conversation!) and juice up the service.
Even though it is one of the closest places to home, I think it would be a rare thing for me to visit again.
Mrs. C and I were in the area looking at condos and we spotted HDL. I heard about this place a few months back, but didn't visit. This time we came to have the famous burger.
The restaurant was empty when we got there, and they had some sports show on the big TV over the bar. The server seemed friendly enough, but disappeared for a while and didn't seem to know what the drink specials were. We ordered a couple of the $13 burgers, and I had a beer which was crazy expensive at 6 bucks for 330ml (about 2/3 of a can of beer). My beloved had a lichee drink for three and a half bucks.
The ambience of the restaurant was dark but comfortable, and the w/c's were both clean but a little old-fashioned and small.
The burgers themselves were pretty good, and the wedge fries were fresh and not from frozen. Not the greatest burger ever, but good.
If this place was in Yaletown they might get away with the prices, but the empty restaurant tells the tale. Good, but too expensive for the neighbourhood.
Can't recommend.
Went here for a friend's birthday a little while ago. The serivce is great, room is nice (although really akward when empty), but the food is just soooo bad! We came in with low expectations too... but we didn't expect it to be so bad... salmon was very very dry.. scallops were dead cold and had a weird texture, salads had no dressing (???), burgers were sooo horrible (I could george foreman something 1000x better), and fries were stiff and cold.. Um on the lighter side, the place does have a nice selection of drinks tho.. So maybe only worth checking out if dining is not your primary objective.
After reading the reviews here and hearing some from others who have been there, I went in with low expectations (for the food). Unfortunately, they were all true. =(
While I did not order any entrees, the others in our party did and not ONE person enjoyed their food. The only thing we could agree on was that the Duck Spring Rolls were decent. Which meant that within a party of 13, we only liked ONE dish.
Overall, this place is nice and the service is awesome so I feel bad about giving it a not so favourable review. But we did mention it to our server. (It's a relatively new place, so we figured they should know). They were really nice about it though.
Anyways, I hope they sort out the kitchen issues soon because I want this place to succeed. Otherwise, everything else was fabulous! (drinks, music & service)
My husband and I were looking for an inexpensive night out, and saw in our Entertainment coupon book the ad for HDL. The coupon was in the front part of the book (where the other upscale restaurant coupons are). We thought the place looked interesting, so decided to give it a whirl. We went on a Friday night, 7:30ish, and there was one other table there. (Friends of staff as it turned out). First disappointment: actual menu different than menu blurb in Entertainment book. Second disappointment: only "meals" were 2 lame-sounding pasta dishes, and several burgers. We opted on "tapas". Ordered crab cakes, mac and cheese and veg. nachos. Yuck to crab cakes (flimsy soggy pancakes, albeit with real crab inside), and double yuck to side "slaw" which was absolutely swimming in orange mayonnaise. YUCK to mac and cheese- bland, greasy and forgettable. TRIPLE YUCK to the nachos!! I should have known not to order them when I'd asked if I could get extra jalapenos on them. Was told no jalapenos on nachos. Server brought me a side of hot sauce for "dipping". (Hot sauce was perhaps same sauce used for spicy chicken wings). The nachos are made of tortilla chips with a cardboard texture, AND they are lime-flavoured. Salsa on top is yucky with bell peppers and lemon juice and other mysterious yucky ingredients. And some squirts of white sauce (? sour cream?) Indescribably yuck. We felt bad that the restaurant was empty so didn't complain. Just left quickly. I have had many mediocre meals in my life (many cooked by myself) but this was far below mediocre. Never again. They need Gordon Ramsay.
Diamond in the ruff on Broadway! I have passed this place so many times and never thought to go in it looks really dark and almost like a club, but I planned a girls night out and chose this over other close by options.
It was awesome from beginning to end, the atmosphere, the staff, the drinks, even the other guests were fun and inviting. The food was amazing! I am so very glad that we decided to go there! I think it might turn into a monthly event!
I went here with some friends for a casual burger & some drinks. On a friday night we were the only group in the restaurant. The food looked awful when it arrived at our table. Crab cakes as thin as pancakes with boring mayo sauce. The chicken burger was covered in mayo- on both sides of the bun, chicken was dripping in grease. Just disgusting. They were nice enough to comp the food that was inedible. Safe to say I will not be back!
We were on our way to Martinis when I passed by the hot red sign of Hennessey so we decided to try it out. This Tapas/Burger joint is just what this neighbourhood needs. Throw in the daily line up of DJs and cute Servers, then every night is a good night at Hennessey. We ate the Nachos, which resemble cute little flat tacos, and the Crab cakes, which are actually made of real Crab. Their Martinis are huge and the exotic fruit slushies are amazing. Too bad their patio is not open all year round. All in all, this is a great little hang out spot.
My friend and I enjoyed very good appetizers (the salmon pate was particularly good maintaining a strong salmon flavour in a delicate creamy and spreadable pate). We also had the burger based on the recommendation preceding ours. It was a very good burger. Our server Angel was pleasant and funny and definitely attentive. We enjoyed ourselves and would definitely return.
My friends and I had dinner here last friday nite (the restaurant got busier towards the nite). We ordered the nachos, pasta with chicken, and a halibut burger with yam fries to share. The food was great especially the nachos and halibut burger!! The look of the restaurant is pretty cool - there's a big red tree painted on one of the walls and a plywood zigzag design feature located on the raised stage. The service was good, the female server was very friendly. Overall, my friends and i will definitely return since we had a good time there and glad that such a place exist around the Main Street area because you would expect this sort of place downtown.
Saw their article on martiniboys.com so I had to check out what all the fuss was about. Wow!!! What an amazing place! It is unlike any place I've been to around here. Truly a West meets East concept. I went on Wednesday for dinner and boy did I luck out. They had this live Jazz singer and Cuban band performing. Good thing we went early otherwise we would not have gotten in. I had the Mussels and Clams with the curry sauce-Oh so savory. Thinking about it now is making me salivate. My boyfriend tried the lemongrass chicken and to my surprise, it was amazingly delightful. (I usually hate ordering chicken breast as it is usually done way too dry). Dessert was sinful. We were going to share the Tiramisu but the Warm chocolate cake with more melted chocolate and vanilla gelato screamed our name. Good bye sweet-tooth. The martinis were good but I must admit the wines selection could be better. However, the manager did say they are about to expand their selection by about twenty more varieties. If that is true, then we've just found our new hang out spot.
Went to this place on a saturday night for a friend's birthday party. It was a intimate gathering of a few good friends. The food here is kinda pricey for my tastes but none the less the quality was very good. However they do have lower end items such as a congac burger and fish and chips ranging from $10-12 if your wallet is light. I had the blackened sockeye salmon with angel hair pasta for $17.88. It was just ok though as it was dry but yet it was still flavourful. My friends had the ribs which was really tasty. It was tender and full of flavour but kinda pricey at $28.
I really liked how the place looked it is small but yet not to the point were it is cramped. As it is also a lounge the light was very dim. We were practically dinning with candle light which I thought made it a really good place to take a date because it has that cozy feeling and there's also a DJ spinning some mixes in the background. They have 2 plasma TVs on the walls and they also showed the Nucks game on TV which I think also makes this place a good place to hangout and drink with friends.
Servers were attentive and really helpful too. I would definately recommend this place.
I've been to the Hennessey about 15 times, usually for late night drinks (eaten there about 3 or 4 of those times). The servers/bartenders are always extremely happy/friendly and aim to please. No snobs here.
The food is pretty good, but not the best in the city by any means. The burgers are really good, but probably avoid the nachos they're kind of bland and un-Mexican tasting. But yeah, the burgers are outstanding.
It's pretty hard to have a bad time at the Hennessey. If you're in a bad mood, or anxious, or stressed, this is definitely a good place to chill out and relax. It's got the tranquility of a museum and the hot vibe of a dance club. The music is always really interesting and ultra hip (satellite radio probably).
Sunday night is comedy and there's a good crowd there. There are always events going on.
Our Hennessey experience was moderate at best. The service was extremely slow (the place was empty except for a couple at the bar, and our table of seven waited for about 30 mins for food).
Once the food came, no one was particularly moved by the food except me and my friend. We both had their organic burger, which at $11 was an absolute steal. 9 ounce burger with bacon, cheese, and a pile of deep fried onions on top plus big wedge fries: rock solid. We also shared a bowl of yam fries, which are always pretty good.
Aside from us though, no one else had particularly good food (nachos were kind of neat -- individually decorated): pastas were not that tasty, and the soup was only "okay".
I would recommend this place to a friend on the basis of the burger alone, but I would only recommend my friend get the burger: at $11, it was an absolute steal.
The service was slow, and the ambiance was only okay. We went on a Wednesday in the evening, so the place wasn't exactly hopping.
The only thing that was actually any good was the yam fries. Well, the drinks were okay too, but that doesn't count as food.
The atmosphere is nice. The service was mediocre. The food was awful. I had the pasta trio, and it looked like something from the cafeteria at my old high school or something. 3 scoops of pasta (ravioli, linguini, and something else...) My friends had the spaghetti with meat balls, and it tasted disgusting. Worst than spaghetti factory, for 150% pricier. How do you mess up spaghetti???
I wouldn't recommend this place for food. As for drinks and yam fries? Maybe...
Henneseys should be embarrassed at the food there are serving and ashamed of the price they are charging. Went there Saturday nite for a get together ( not my choice of place at all) and holy hell what a disappointment. The Nachos were so herendously nasty I couldnt even choked down more then 2, I tried to pass them off to other people and everyone at my table gagged, the portion was so small a 2 year old would need more and they slap all the salsa ( gross salsa i may add) all over the top, with little to no chesse and a smattering of sour cream on top, sick sick sick. DO NOT ORDER THE CHICKEN BURGER!!! First of all our chicken burgers were put in an oversized bun, that was hard as a rock, my brothers "chicken" came in 3 little pieces on the bun, as we were eating realize our chicken was dark in color, so I voiced my concerns saying is this even chicken breast, the waitress claimed it was, then i advised her then its poorly cooked or rotten, I asked if it was in fact real chicken, she stumble and say umm well its not chicken breast but im sure its chicken, ummmmmmm what,it was chicken thy meat, like are you kidding me, I sent all my food back, the coffee was burnt, the place smelt stale, the prices outrageous, almost $13 for the nachos and almost $13 for my "chicken thy" burger, oh and about 4-5 wedge fries, that tasted like old oil. The service was slow and dull. They added a %17 tip to my moms bill without her knowledge, the manager advising its standard, really when everyone has complained about there food and the service and the prices and the rotten tastes in our mouths..its standard to charge %17 tip, I think not. My cousin got a "thin crust pizza" you will see them braggin bout how thin it is, yet they charged ( on special) $10.95. It look liked it was served on rice paper and was bout 4 inches by 4 inches, and about 2 inches of that was yet again "chicken thy meat" and a small blob of cheese, way to go making it look like its something special while you laugh at people for paying your ridiculous prices. As for the drinks, garbage, pop was flat as said before coffee burnt and the salted rim of my brothers drinks.. ya table salt, how cheesy and cheap. For all the people that are out there that are too nice to voice when you have been fooled and rip off by this place I had to say something for them and my entire family. I have never ever written a complaint about a restaurant in my life, but felt so compelled. All I kept thinkin while I was there was that I couldnt wait to leave and that Gordon Ramsey wouldnt even attempt to help these people on Kitchen Nightmares, this place is no nightmare it is an actual living hell.
