A Japanese restaurant in the downtown core that specializes in noodle and barbeque dishes.
I came here only once and have yet had the urge to go back. The food was fine, but nothing special setting it apart from all the other little Japanese restaurants downtown. It was good value for the amount of food you get, but it's not always about cheap eats. I would sometimes rather spend a little more to get something different than the familiar chicken terriyaki don with sauce from a bottle. Maybe someday I will return.
Go for the noodles, not for the sushi. Good to go for a quick bite before rushing off to the theatre or a meet up somewhere downtown. Friendly service.
Great spot for before a movie. Cheap, fast, and tasty. The sushi is good, not great. Good lunchbox specials, and friendly service. Easy place to go if youre not sure where to go. The food is consistant and fast.
Now this place has been doing booming business ever since I have been in Vancouver. The service is excellent while rushed but they never leave you waiting long. I would say the food quality is excellent and they have a grea lunch or dinner combination menu. I really enjoy Kitto when I am in the mood for Japanese.
My first experience at Kitto was far from pleasant. Although the staff was very friendly, and we were seated quickly, I have yet to have worse Japanese food in Vancouver. The nori in my sushi was soggy, and my miso, most confusingly, was sour. Overall an unpleasant experience that I would not reccomend.
I have been going to Kitto for many many years. It is not the best place for sushi and their menu is not unique or different. They serve some cheap lunch/dinner boxes with a bit of everything. A great place to eat if you do not have a lot of time to sit at a restaurant to eat because of the quick service and fast delivery to your tables. Def. one of the better places to eat Japanese in downtown Vancouver. Must try it once but not missing much if you don't.
Kitto is the Japanese food place I go when I go Downtown. I enjoy watching the cooking and feel the energy of the alive kitchen. The food is great and especially I like their noodle soups. Also I can find rare dishes here and have a good time.
Kitto is a good downtown sushi joint. The food is consistently tasty and the service is prompt. I went on Friday night and had a couple of awesome dishes, the blue fin tuna sashimi was really fresh and yummy and the tuna tataki which was seared to perfection. I have to say that they need to work on their scallop cones though.
it's expected. Kitto is always packed during lunch. It's best to go at 11:50am (before the lunch rush). The maki sushi here is dinky. Good place for co-worker lunches because they have a couple of big booths along the left side of the restaurant (once you walk in). Service is not that bad during lunch. They will still come around to fill your tea. If you order a Bento box, make sure they serve you your ice cream. They forgot to give ice cream to my friend. Can't tell if their fish is fresh. It seems okay because they are pretty busy. The salmon is for sure farmed. You can taste it. Nothing special here. You get the regular stuff like salmon roll, tuna, california roll, tempura, teriyaki chicken/beef, etc. 3.5/5 for lunch during work!
I believe this place deserves a more fair review than what I've seen. I've been to this place more than 10 times for both lunch and dinner and they do offer wild salmon sashimi and sushi for a bit higher price than their farmed cousins. Fish is always fresh. Robata on the dinner menu was great, I particularly like the saba. Rolls are creative and different from the usual Japanese restaurant offerings. Also very accommodating with my baby. Reliable service and attentive. I have sushi at least 4-5 times a week, and I've become more picky over time that I only go to a few. Kitto is one of them and is a very solid choice for reliable food and service.
The sushi is above average, and consistent. The price of everything is above average. You can find better sushi for the same price elsewhere, but this is downtown where most sushi joints are crap and expensive. Go for the consistency, fishes, and location. I don't suggest the noodles as you can find much better for cheaper at Ezogiku which is not too far away.
I went there for lunch with a buddy of mine. The service was good. The ambiance OK except that the air conditioning was non-existent and it was darned hot! Exascerbated by the miso soup!
I had combo #3 which had tempura (too much batter), teriyaki beef (not sweet enough and rubbery), and salad (OK with the dressing). Because I was hungry I swallowed most of it and drank the miso soup which was OK.
To finish off the meal was green tea ice cream (could not have been made by the restaurant because it was good). I would never take anyone to this restaurant. I perspired drastically into my suit. The steam and stir fry fumes from the open kitchen acted as a sauna as I ate. I reeked of teriyaki beef and was dying to leave and breathe some fresh air. The restaurant needs a new vent.
I recommend you take someone you don't like to this restaurant and sit at the sushi/open kitchen bar and let him/her have a facial.
This is one of my favorite sushi places downtown. Veggie rolls are tasty. I've been told their soups/udons are wonderul.
The tofu-avocado salad has a very yummy dressing, and the tofu and avocado themselves are always very fresh... Veggie beware, this item includes fish stock! I had visited Kitto 3 times and had asked every time if there was any meat or seafood products in the dressing - and it wasn't until the 3rd time I got a straight answer, that there is fish stock in the dressing. VERY dissapointing to know that they either didn't care enough to check or couldn't understand my English inquiry. The service is usually very friendly, but I only gave them a 2 cause they REALLY have to smarten up when they're hosting vegetarians!! This is basic stuff!
I go here once and try the food, but it is only okay. It is like so many others in downtown. Nothing special here. If you can get parking it is good to try. All the dishes are the usual, nothing outstanding or rare. Better than Shabusen.
My wife and I have been sushi lovers for over a decade. We have been going to Kitto house on average once a month. Our last visit, we BOTH received food poisioning from our sushi meals. We contacted them to resolve the issue but received no call back from management. We then sent a letter attention to the manager/owner with no response in the last 2 weeks!!!
BE AWARE!
Granted, it's a risk when you consume raw fish, etc. but at least one would expect some sort of acknowledgement from the establishment when a scenario like this is reported!
Definitely a FAILURE!
