Full service Japanese Restaurant
Noticed that they have items on the back page of their menu that is 40% off after 7pm. Went there at around 8pm and there was a bit of a take out crowd but pretty quiet. Ramen ordered and pretty average with OK soup and portions were a bit small. Rolls were quite good and at 40% off, a good deal. Overall meal was good and the price was great. The service was just OK with items coming late for other people at the table.
Once again kishu rocks it. Their newer menu is easy to read and has a few lovely additions that taste great. Like I said I'm a regular here and have continued to have great service and tasty fresh japanese fare.
I went yesterday for lunch and had a combo from their lunch special. It came with a salad, miso soup, rice, mixed tempura (incl. prawn) and a california roll all for only $7.50! wow! you can't beat that! They have about 12 other combos all ranging from $6-$8 dollars.
They have hired a few new girls that are really nice too.
This restaurant has done a complete 180, past reviews were indicative of the old Kishu, the new and improved is a local favorite for all of us.
I placed a pick up order for their bento box B. When I got back to work I noticed the 2 shrimp tempura were missing.
When I next placed a pick up order I mentioned this to the lady on the phone, and asked for 2 extra shrimp tempura this time, a reasonable request I thought since paid for and didn't recieve them last time.
So they did give me 4 shrimp tempura, but they were cold, stale and soggy. I could barely stomach eating one of them.
The beef which is usually nicely shreded and cooked was a few solid chunk of meat barely fully cooked. I don't know if they were mad that I'd ask for 4 tempura and do this on purpose... but I don't care. Never eating here again.
I was in Kits with some friends and we decided on the spur of the moment to check this place out based on the fact that they had a patio. I should have noticed it was a Kishu restaurant because I have had bad experiences at one of the other locations, but I was careless. I came to regret my choice.
The server was downright rude from the get go, and he seemed to treat our orders as an imposition. After an interminable wait, the food came. It was okay, but the fish tasted a bit off. Might have been the heat. I had a selection of sushi, and my friends had bento boxes. I ordered a beer, and after a couple of reminders the server brought that too.
During my wait I checked out the premises. It could have been a bit cleaner, especially the w/c. I mean this was Kits after all.
The worst part of the meal was at the end. The menu price was not the price we were charged. When I asked the server, he said it was too expensive to change the menu. I pointed out that the prices had been written in pen and in some cases whited out and re-written. I suggested that they charge what the menu said, and not make up the prices. After negotiations with the manager (who refused to speak to me directly) they relented. Or so I thought. I was presented with exactly the same bill as before! I paid and left, vowing never to return to this clip joint.
Not Recommended.
I used to come here often because I work in the area. It seems that they've had a change of servers, though, and since then the service has been bad. Really bad.
Last time we were there, the server impatiently kept coming to our table asking for our order every 10 seconds while we were still perusing the menu. It was 5pm and the restaurant was empty--give me a break. So I asked him what was in a few rolls, since I like to try new things when I go out. "I have no idea" with a blank stare is not an acceptable answer when I ask what's in the house roll.
So I ordered a couple of rolls and some miso soup, and my partner placed his order. His food came out after a few minutes. And so we waited. And waited. And waited some more.
Ten minutes go by. I can see the sushi chefs working away--no problem. Then I can see my food sitting on the bar. I can also see our waiter standing around chit chatting. By this time, we have no soy sauce, one of us has a meal, and our teacups are empty. So I went to the bar and got my food myself because I had an appointment and very limited time, then I pilfered a bottle of soy sauce, sat down and ate quickly. He saw what I was doing and just kept chatting away.
We waited another 10 minutes for our bill (still no tea refills, btw) which never came, so we just went to the til, paid, left no tip, and left, never to return.
Although the food was good, the lack of service just ruins the whole experience. Not recommended.
I walked by this restaurant the other day and saw it had a nice little outdoor terrace (something many restaurants in Vancouver lack) so I thought my boyfriend and I should give it a try on this nice summer evening. The restaurant itself was clean and casual, with a lot to choose from on the menu (not your authentic Japanese though!). We ordered an assorted sashimi and sushi platter, a few rolls and a pork kastu donburi dish.
Well... the sashimi was extremely sad. The rolls were soggy and pasty - except for the mango roll which was just plain weird having a huge carrot stick and cucumber slice in the middle. Then came the donburi and blargh! The pork was dry and soggy (if that can be possible) with hardly any of that great sauce that makes the donburi dishes a donburi!
In a nutshell - from the great selection of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, Kishu Sky is definitely one to be forgotten...
I've eaten their food a few times but always as take-out on my way to or from nearby activities. Until today, I've only ordered the usual rolls or the teriyaki chicken on rice. The chicken is fine and the rolls are average take-out quality.
Today, I decided to order a Bento Box...bad decision. It came with chiken teriyaki on rice (no complaints), some california rolls (the usual, so so), salad (how can you go wrong with a few pieces of lettuce), miso soup (probably from packaged mix), a can of pop....but...oh my God...the 4 pcs of nigiri sushi (2 salmon, 1 tuna, 1 ebi) were terrible. I can't imagine when the salmon, tuna and ebi took their last breath. Aging is good for beef but I don't think it applies to seafood.
If you must eat here, stay with the cooked food, they seem to do OK with it. Have a roll, if you must, but stay the hell away from the raw stuff. Good thing I didn't order the sashimi bento box (shudder). Prices are average.
Oh yeah, and they can be a bit slow at times so phone in your order if you want to pick up and dash.
