Put some money into this place.

Went here as Local was too busy on a weeknight, what a mistake. The place has not changed in over 10 years. The washrooms are graffitti filled and needs some minimal upkeep. The interior is run down, dark and totally unappealing. As expected, there were very few people inside but the patio was full. Seems like they have a new menu, probably just to increase prices. Ordered the burger and the patty was really small and dry. Onion rings were your standard ones that were prepared by someone else. Overall the food was bad. Service was just OK. I think this place needs to close down and renovated. Value was poor given the quality of food, burgers around $10. Will not return.

Divey Place, but Very Cool

Yes, I know my numbers don't add up. The food is very decent standard pub food. Not great, not bad. Service is very slow an unattentive, and the place is dirty as hell, and falling apart. The seat cushions are actually taped up with duct tape.
It smells quite bad when you walk in, but after 15 minutes you get used to it.
So, it's all really quite bad here, but it's got personality. It's just oozing out from the rotting furniture. I know not to expect anything very good from here, but its a fun place to go for a drink.
Sometimes bad works. It's so bad it's good!

i have eaten at the kingshead for years and have always been satisfied with the less than ground breaking pub fare that they put out. tasty fresh ingredients go a long way for me even if they are mostly pub standard items. the new menu they have now though is definatly an improvement! i went there with my girlfriend saturday night and had the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich while she had the jambalaya and we really liked it ....especially for the price. also they had alot of great draft beers and live music as well. for pub fare in kits the kingshead gets my vote every time.

Went out with some friends, watched a beautiful sunset at Kits Beach, then thought we would try the "local" hangout of some people we know. The service was outstanding, the server paid great attention to us and we never went with out a drink in hand. We watched their house band, it was so cool to see a place with some great live music!! The food was good, large portions for the price. All in all it was a really great evening in a very cozy local Gem.

Sunday brunch with omelete bar
By doodles of kits (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, June 29, 2010 - 8:10pm [Dine in]

I'm only reviewing because I saw the King's Head at the top of the list and thought it was funny as I was just there this past Sunday. I've been there before and was always generally disappointed with the food and service. However, the vibe was all good when I was there this time.

They do indeed have a new chef and he looks to be making some positive changes ( he actually came out to our table to see how the food was, something the wait staff neglected to do). We piled into the pub expectying the usual mediocre to poor fare and were pleasantly surprised. The pub has a full service Sunday Brunch; it even has an omelete bar (as in someone is actually standing there making omeletes to order, with whatever you want in it)!

I'm a breakfast nut so this was a really a treat for me.

From what I gathered talking the to the new chef they're planning on doing the brunch every sunday. WHOO Boy. That is what sunday's are made for. Nice big brunch and then a nap on the beach, convienently located DOWN hill.

Just to be clear about the low service score; it was nice to have the chef personally come to the tables, but it would also be nice to get some personable service from the actual wait staff. I recognized our server as being there for a few years and have never been pleased by her abilities (or lack of). Perhaps a "changing of the guard" is necessary in the front of house as well, as the kitchen seems to really have it going on.

All told, I'll be going back and am interested to see if the changes around there are going to take it from a hole in the wall dive to a respectable Kits fixture to head to before, during and after a beach day.

Drink early or face the wrath

Submitted Sunday, July 24, 2011 - 1:42am [Dine in]

We went here with friends the other night for a little food and some drinks. Had a couple mediocre appetizers, typical pub fare, kind of gross. The service was OK until the 1pm closing, which surprised us originally. 1pm? There was no indication this "pub" closed early. So the waitress informed us at about 12:55 that they were closing. Fine, we ordered another round as we were on round two and enjoying some good catch-up conversation. At 1:05 am, just after we received our final round and finishing our tab, the waitress appeared and commanded us to finish our drinks. Her exact words: "Closing time people! Finish up and get out!"

Which she repeated with growing frustration at two minute intervals until we left our final round unfinished so as not to further enrage her, despite the fact that the bar was still full of drinking patrons. We had already left a good tip and could not fathom why we were suddenly being treated like drunken morons, despite the fact that we were only on our third round and were having a quiet conversation.

The bar itself is too loud (ambient music-wise, and the cover band was terrible- Counting Crows: really?), the bathrooms were filthy and tiny, and the furniture is rickety at best. We shared a back rest with the booth behind us which rocked back and forth at about a 45-degree angle whenever anyone sat down. We had to agree with the other party not to lean on it since drinks were being spilled.

I hate to be this petty, but aside from the fact that I will never visit again, Local (one block north) has much more polite and about a million times more attractive waitresses (and better food and drink, even if it is too expensive for a bar). Our waitress at the King's Head (July 23, 2011) was a toady, grumpy blond who should not have been wearing the black yoga tights she elected to wear that night. She served us the one other time we visited, and she was just as grumpy and unsightly. Hopefully she reads this and considers another profession.

In conclusion, never ever go to King's Head, which is a horrible bar. Go to Local or Hapa Izakaya if you really, really need a drink, if you are on Kits Beach and you have nowhere else to go. But frankly, this is not really a neighborhood to enjoy a night out on the town. There are no good pubs in Kits, trust me on that one.

Note: For the families looking for a Pub - Children are allowed!
By DineOutPrincess of Hastings-Sunrise, Vancouver (15 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 10:20am [Dine in]

Kings Head does not hold a Pub license so young ones are allowed in. Don't be fooled by it being listed as a pub - it looks like pub, feels like a pub and people behave like they are in a pub, so if you don't mind taking your family into that you certainly can here!

I have always found the food to be what one would expect from a pub-style or pub. The service was better on my last visit two weeks ago than any of my previous visits. We were picking out our own seat when an angry older lady approached and she seemed to think she should seat us however she behaved annoyed about the whole thing. We ignored that silliness and the wait staff who served us was pleasant and returned just enough to ensure the food was good and that we had all we needed.

Today I came on here to see how the breakfast buffet they offer on Sundays from 10am - 2pm is holding out by all you lovely dine here critics and I am excited by what I see!

The family and I are off to ride from Hastings-Sunrise to Kings Head in Kits and stuff our hungry bellies with customized omelets cooked by a chef in front of us for only $9.95! Then roll around on the beach... :-)

I will let you all know later if it was worth the ride!

Totally WICKED time- Good Service, Awesome Music, OK Food.

Decided to check out the Kings Head a few Fridays ago after walking by and hearing the live music. The band playing that night was AWESOME (the server told us it was their house band). I was actually surprised at how good these guys were. They played both covers and originals and even rocked a violin for a few songs- very impressed.

Both my boyfriend and I ate and while it was definitely not gourmet food- for a pub it was surprisingly good. I had the veggie pesto flatbread and he had fish and chips. Would totally order both of these things again. While the food was good the drink prices were the highlight of the meal. Seriously - I've been a regular at the local for a while and I had no idea the Kings Heads beer was so much cheaper!!

As for service, our server was super friendly. Can't remember her name- but she was wearing giant feather earrings. She seems to always be working as I always see her around the Kings Head/Yew street a lot since then. She was super helpful with all of our questions about beers and even offered us samples of the drafts on special.

Overall- I had a surprisingly good time at the Kings Head. Cheap beer. Great Service. OK Food. Will totally go back on a Friday to see the house band again!

I went into the King's Head this evening with some friends and we had a great time. They have changed ownership recently, we were told and the new manager is starting up great cheap food and drink speecials. Tonight we had wings that were 39 cents and they have numerous beer specials. They also have new musicians in which tonights was great. She had an awesome voice. I highly checking it out as the server told us there are some more new changes coming soon. Keep up the good work,

This place is terrible. The server completely forgot our order and did not even apologize for it. When we asked to speak to management, they simply said that this happens very often. No customer service skills what so ever. This is literally the worst place to go to. They do not treat their customers up to standards at all. Very unprofessional. As well, the food that we did receive was absolutely terrible. Management did not even offer a discount after the horrible experience we had even though we were sure to bring it to their attention. Clearly, business is not appreciated in this place. It SUCKS. I hope it gets shut down for good.

3 out of 7 meals sent back, one twice

Submitted Monday, July 19, 2010 - 1:51pm [Dine in]

We used to go to the Kings Head in High School - we decided to try to recreate the experience for our 25th Grad Reunion pre-party get together - wow have things changed. The food used to be good. Some of us ordered chicken strips with fries which weren't too bad. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs - wanted penne instead of spaghetti noodles as they also offered penne on the menu. I was told that wasn't an option - red herring to the food to come. I used to be a cook - the pasta & sauce I was served had been premixed together hours if not days prior to it being microwaved. I eat leftovers at home, I am not going to pay for them when I am out. It was actually disgusting. We also ordered an Ahi Tuna Salad that went back and grossed one friend out so much she didn't order anything else. A cheese and mushroom "hockey puck" was received first time around, reordered and came more like a cow patty and without cheese. They didn't have any real cheddar cheese they could slice, we were brought some shredded combo in a bowl...wtf, a restaurant that doesn't have slice-able cheese but offers cheese burgers on the menu???? We were offered no apologies and even though the hamburger was barely touched, he was still charged for it. The wait staff was obviously a bit embarrassed and frustrated but they still couldn't smooth over the situation and didn't offer any help.

There was a decent bar band of two guys playing and the place is kind of cool and retro with cozy places to sit...we used to go there a lot for a reason!

Outside the sign said, "Join us for our new reopening July 29, under new management" - unless the New Management goes to school to learn how to run a restaurant and hires a cook who actually gets that if you don't mix the noodles with the sauce and just heat them up in a pot of hot water for a second, mixing them with the sauce just before you serve it - you can have left overs for days and no one will be the wiser! I am sure the original owners are unhappy they sold the name with the biz!

Try the Chowder
By pub_food_buff of burnaby (1 Review)

Having grown up an island boy, i'm pretty picky about my seafood.

The chowder here was some of the best I've had (and i've been known to have alot ;) ). Flavour, texture, everything was perfect.

I would definetely go back to try some other dishes, but I would have the chowder again to start.

I dined with some friends who ordered a few other dishes. Everything was superb. Apparently there is a new chef and he's really making the food into something worthwhile.

I may have just found my new local beach pub!

I went this place on UFC game night. It was packed, but service was good and food was awesome! price is very reasonable. Now they have Sunday brunch all you can eat. Sausage, bacon, french toast (outstanding! really good!), etc...and 4 or 5 kinds fresh fruits. The omelet bar was pretty amazing. I definitely go there again! loved it.

The drinks were definitely watered down.
When they say that pitchers are on special, they really mean that it's a 25-cent discount with a LOT of water they put in the pitcher.
Service was terrible; they don't know how to work a credit card.
We left a jacket there by accident, and when we called back to see if it was there, they were really rude to us and wouldn't tell us if it was there. Apparently she had a bunch of jackets, but wouldn't take 15 seconds to check for one of them.

The floors are also nasty in there.

My group of friends get to this pub and the waitress serving us initially takes credit cards from us to start running a tab for the night. About 1/2 hour later, the next waitress tells us that we can no longer run a tab, and that we have to immediately start paying by cash. This waitress proceeds to treat us poorly, telling us after a several pitchers of beer (divided among a group of 11) that we don't need the shots that we ordered in a disdainful manner, and walks off. But she brings them anyways?!. When she gets to the table, she asks if we bet on who will puke first (none of us are inebriated at this point). So we continue ordering food and drinks racking up a large bill, and then right after we're done, with several of us still enjoying ourselves and nursing some beers, she tells us that we've been here her entire shift, and we either order more (didn't she tell us we couldn't) or leave. When the bill was split up for the other half of the table, they gave her a 10% tip for the horrific service (insulting us, not helping us at all) she comes back to the table to give us a gigantic speech about how she has to tip out and that she's here trying to make money. Although I agree that the situation is tough for her, my understanding of tip is that it's not a given right and as a server, you're tipped for the quality of your service. The ambiance is OK if you like dives. Food was decent, typical quality of bar food. I'm sure some people have had perfectly enjoyable experiences there, but ours was just plain bad.

Submitted Friday, October 17, 2008 - 3:24pm [Dine in]

This used to be my bar. I still go every once and a while for nostalga, but other than that, I don't bother.

The food is fine. It's nothing super special, but for pub food it's fine. The fries and burgers are pretty satisfying and the hot wings are solid. Pretty standard pub fair.

The beer... well, its hit and miss. Sometimes it tastes like something funky died in the tap and sometimes it tastes flat. Occasionally it tastes like beer. I've tried most beers in there and this is a universal problem. They almost ruined Keiths for me, for which I may never forgive them.

The service is plain terrible. Now, I hate blaming the servers for this, because there just aren't enough of them. On weekends that place hops and they only have 2 or 3 servers. Sometimes you food or drink order will take an hour to come and most of that time is the poor server trying to shove her way through the crowd with five orders.

As for ambiance, well, the Kings Head is funky. It's got an old school wooden interior and look like its seen heavy use, which it has. What I'm not a fan of is some of the live music. They turn the volume up to 'ear bleeding' and let the dudes croone. Occasionally the live music is awesome, occasionally the guy forgets the words to the song he's singing and just goes, "duh duh duh duh duh REVOLUUUUTION, yeah, you know... duh duh duh duh duh duh." Buddy, if you don't know the Beatles, don't sing 'em. I've also been yealled at by the musician for talking during his set. I was unaware I was at the Orpheum. I had thought I was at a bar. When you play at the Kings Head, its ambiance, not a sacred act.

I used to love this place, but the negative things started taking over the positive ones. Now the terrible service and obnoxious music have chased me away. But fun times can be had their if you're patient and looking to get rowdy.

How did this place get worse???
By mandy_y of Fairview, Vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Wednesday, March 18, 2009 - 11:54am [Dine in]

The Kings Head has never been a great place to go for good food or even good drinks. It's a dive but a predictable dive. I've been there many times in the past and have at least received decently priced drinks with OK pub food. My standards for this place are low at the best of times - they managed to fail to meet those.

Last night (St. Patrick's Day) was so awful. My friends and I got there early and it wasn't busy, however, it still took 30 minutes for a waitress to come by and ask us what we wanted to drink, it took another 20 minutes to receive those drinks (4 pints of Guiness and 1 highball). The drinks are usually watered down at this place but it was worse than ever before! My highball came in a 4 oz cup - i believe 2 of those ounces were ice and the rest a dash of sode and a pinch of alcohol. Worse yet my straw was barely long enough to reach over the top of the mini cup. Why? Because they were cutting the straws in half!!! You could actually see the crease and cut marks. The lime that was forced onto the edge of the cup was cut so thinly that you could see through it. I know some people don't use their limes but I do and I was totally annoyed.

I ordered the 2 piece fish and chips like I always do and it was 1/2 the portion that it ususally is. I understand portion sizes are too big and we all eat too much but don't give me a kid size meal and charge me adult prices. That was outragous! I seriously could have fit all of the fries I received into my plam. My friends meals and drinks were no better. Frankly I think they were worse. My boyfriend's cheese burger smelled and tasted like fish.

The atmosphere was worse than usual as well. They had some horrible act on that was singing to pre-programmed midi files on his keyboard. The only saving grace of the night was when 2 guys came up to sing - I've seen them at the pub before, they were amazing and I was so sad to see them go. AND the toilet in the womens washroom overflowed and no one was cleaning or attending to it. EW.

Don't go to the Kings Head. I'm OK with dive bars but I want ones that are a value.
