Worst Japanese food ever
By glepori of Boulder Creek, California (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, April 15, 2012 - 4:28pm [Dine in]

I love Japanese food, but this was the worst I have ever had. The restauant and menu looked intriguing from the outside. Upon entering my wife and I smelt paint thinner. The restaurant had floor tile that looked like it was from the 1970's era. The rest of the restaurant looked well used and from the same era, kind of a greasy spoon feel to it.
I ordered the bento box with beef teriyaki. My wife ordered the tempura with teriyaki. We were both vey hungry and looking forward to a nice lunch.
The miso soup was flavorless. The sushi was poorly rolled and was like a grocery store quality. The vegi-rolls were burnt. The teriyaki was greasy like it had been fried on a griddle.
The waitress asked how everything was and I told her not so good. I pointed out the obviously burnt vegi-rolls. She ignored my comments. I found the wait staff to be unfriendly and curt. They didn't smile and were not welcoming. They appreared to be bored and seemed to hate working there.

NIce Surprise

I often crave for sushi but I'm always so hesitant in trying new restaurants. I'm kinda picky when it comes to sashimis.
So today, I decided to go ahead and give this place a try. I went in for lunch and the place was 80% full. Service was good. They put me in a dark corner but they didn't ignore me.
I had an ice tea, salmon sashimi and toro nigiri. I love fatty salmon, unfortunately they only serve the "lean" ones. To my surprise though, it tasted pretty good and it was fresh. The toro was super soft and melted in my mouth.
I was satisfied.

three waitresses and lots of waiting

This is probably the most dis-organized restaurant I've been to. We were served by 3 short waitresses and it took about an hour to get our food in a restaurant that was only half full. The portions were tiny, the serving of rice tiny, some of the salmon sushi was so cold I thought it just came out of a freezer. The portion of salmon saheme, though tasty and soft, was so small that I was still pretty hungry afterwards. I'm in no way a big eater but for $16 I had better be full. We dont eat like asia we eat more. I'm never going back to that restaurant again and I'd recommend against anyone else visiting it unless you "really" want to see the typical disorganzied asian service.

Average Japanese food at best

A group of my friends decided to check this place out as we had time to kill before a movie across the street. The interior is fairly dark and they don't really have seating for larger groups like the 7 of us so they pushed a few tables together. Our group ordered a variety of dishes including ramen, roll combos, bento boxes, gomaae and fried rice.

The ramen isn't anything that you couldn't make at home and not nearly on par with any of the places like Benkei or Kintaro. It also had a lot of non-traditional ingredients like peas, carrots and green pepper and the most bland broth I've ever tasted. I'll take a bowl of Nong Shim or Ichiban over this any day. The sushi looked OK but didn't really stand out from any other place in town. The gomaae looked enormous but closer inspection revealed that the spinach salad was buffered by a pile of lettuce which was disappointing. There is really no great value here, it's not super expensive or a bargain which is fine.

Service was poor. One member of her party didn't get her order until 15 minutes after the rest of us even though it was the same combo another person ordered. We shared some hot sake which didn't come until halfway through the meal. Considering this place was less than half full, this was fairly weak service. I think most of their business comes from their proximity to the law courts and the theatre and I won't be back. I'd rather get a Japadog up the street.

Decent sushi but...

I ate here the other night because it was close to the movie theatre and I had a craving for sushi. The ambiance is decent inside; its pretty much all booths which are comfortable.

We ordered various dishes and nothing was really standout. I probably should have just saved some money and got a bento box. At 12 bucks, this is probably the best way to go at this restaurant since they seem to rely mostly on movie traffic and the quality isn't the greatest. The nori was a little chewy which kind of ruined my spicy tuna cone for me.

The floor was a little slippery and one of the servers took a nasty spill carrying two bento boxes. I hope she was OK, she didn't seem to be in the best condition as we were leaving. I was glad we were done though because I am pretty sure the service grinded to a halt with only one server and the place being packed.

With the plethora of sushi options in Vancouver, I probably won't return.

Good Lunch Spot

I went to Kimono for the first time yesterday with a friend who frequents the place on a regular basis. The menu is huge (5 pages) and the list is quite extensive. I wanted to try something different, so I opted for the Kimono seafood udon soup with tempura for $8.95. My friend had a vegetarian bento box and the portions were surprisingly big for lunch. When she asked to substitute something in her bento box, there was no protest, only the mention of an additional charge, which was acceptable.

Everything was very tasty & hot and service was prompt. The staff came by often to fill our tea cups and we didn't have to ask for anything.

Overall, I thought it was pretty good and I would go back to try their other unique offerings.

Fish isn't fresh.

Only ended up here for a late lunch because it was one of the closest food place that wasn't closed in between lunch/dinner hrs with a soup noodle that might satisfy the craving of one of the people I was with. Thought I might as well give it a shot since it might turn out well though from appearances alone, it seems like a purely bento type place catered to a certain crowd which seeks convenience more than culinary surprises.

The saba was not fresh & quite darker in appearance than it ought to be. The sushi rice was too warm still & the pieces were not skillfully packed together. They come apart easily. The ikura is obviously not fresh. The half the skin of each roe is like dead dry skin tissue. Not at all appetizing. The toro though not awful, was just not worth risking... The tako seemed alright. The packaged ramen they use has not been rinsed of or drained/boiled clear of the soapy preservative chemicals. It's still very present & affects the prepackaged miso soup flavouring. The carrots in the seafood udon hardly seemed washed & also not shaved properly as there were still black dirt running down an entire side of the poorly grated carrot. One of our plastic cups of tea also had very visible lipstick marks around the rim.

The (vietnamese?) kimono girl heavily made-up w/ some of that deep dark lipstick stuck on her teeth looked very unhappy working there & just takes our orders, comes to drop them off reciting what it was & walking away w/o much of a glance or smile at anyone. She must really hate going around the room like that all day but I suppose it's still a paycheque.

Good Downtown Sushi

I tried this place with some friends for lunch and we left full and happy. We all had bento boxes which had the usual suspects, California Roll, Spring Roll, Beef Teriyaki, Salad, and Miso Soup. All the food was fresh and tasty and the service was excellent. It is a lovely new addition to the many restaurants downtown. Ask for Jeremy the manager to find out about their daily specials.

Not a good restaurant. My friend found a bone in her sushi roll. Two out of four of my sushi have gone bad. Not fresh at all. Not a good place for fresh sushi. Don't think I will return to this restaurant given that there are plenty of choices in the downtown core.

I agree with the previous post about how the only good thing about this place is that there is always seating available.

Pros: umm...the food came to the table hot...that's about it.
Cons: the owner(?) kept speaking very loudly across the restaurant in Vietnamese...very annoying. The servers don't speak English and couldn't even understand "more tea please".
They took forever to process the bill. We waited and asked 2 waitresses about returning the credit card - they looked in awe, scratched their head, went to "check on it" and never came back. Girlfriend K had to go up to find her own credit card.

Don't think I'd come back for more, sorry.

I've been coming to this place for lunch since they opened last year.
Initially it was good sushi for the value and the place is spacious, unlike my usual sushi place further up Hornby so when we go from work we have space to relax. The problem with this place like a lot of others is that as they grow in popularity either service or quality suffers.
I have no problem with the service; the Kimono get up is cute but really not necessary. The food IS going down hill a bit. I was there yesterday for lunch and I swear the spicy tuna in my lunch box was off!! uugh!
I know it's a risk to order "spicy' anything roll as that is what they do with the older fish but at some point they gotta chuck out or someone may get sick at worst, or like me look for somewhere else for lunch. Too bad, this place was great.

There's Better sushi out there

Submitted Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 1:59am [Dine in]

Only good thing about this place:
-bound to have seats (no wait); this restaurant is HUGE. i highly doubt they're ever filled to capacity though.
-tempura, yam tempura was CHEAP CHEAP. 3.50 for huge plate. it had at least 6 large pieces. ALTHOUGH IT WASN'T VERY TASTY. it wasn't oily and crunchy yes, but very bland and the potato was of the white sweet variety not the orange.

The combos are not good. Sashimi and sushi portions are half of momo's (head there instead, it's near waterfront and double the portions for half the cost) The terriyaki chicken wasn't fried or crispy enough. it had a LOT Of fat > meat. It wasn't tasty either. Sushi was bland.

Service was less than average. For every single thing, we had to ask. (Except for the menu) Tea, napkins, refill, questions, bill,...i mean cmon, why are you deliberately ignoring us. If the tips really are shared....it would make more sense to be more hospitable instead of a big poop.

Overall, I'm never coming again, I rather eat take out sushi. (which obviously i woudln't prefer)

Solid Sushi Restaurant

Submitted Saturday, August 8, 2009 - 7:27pm [Dine in]

My gf and I have been here a few times, and we always seem to order just the Bento Box. While we enjoy their extensive menu, the fare just seems too ordinary; everything on there seems like pages and pages of the same thing. I can understand if they want to stick to traditional Japanese cooking, but perhaps the introduction of 'fusion sushi' may bring more customers in. I've been to a lot of sushi joints, and all of them have the more normal sushi rolls, but they have also created signature rolls that utilizes fresh and interesting sushi combinations.

The value of the food is okay- although my one complaint is a drink issue. The last time we went there for lunch, my gf ordered a sprite, and I ordered a coke. When the drinks came, hers came in a can and mine in a glass bottle. The bottle had almost half as much drink in it, and when we got the cheque we saw that it cost almost twice as much. Had I known that I'd be paying more money for less drink, I would have ordered something else.

Not Sure What This Japanese Hype is All About

took a young lady friend here as we had a date after work including a quick stay before ehading home. She craved Sushi and this joint was close by. Now I wouldnt vouch for their hygiene and cleanliness but the service was super fast and we got our orders (japanese combos) promptly. They have tried to put some oriental decorations here and there but that was it. I was willing to pay for something good like Earls (hehe) but sometimes the ladies take control and want oriental food. Nothing special.

Bento Boxes were ok

Submitted Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 10:44pm [Dine in]

FOOD: Went there for lunch with 3 others and we all ordered our respective boxed lunch. Didn't try the fish at all cuz my tummy has been queezy all week so stuck with the cooked food was average at best. My companions all left feeling full and relatively satisfied.

SERVICE: Was checked upon quite frequently and tea refilled often so that was good. Especially since it was lunch hour and usually they just try to move you thru.

AMBIANCE: Comfortable seating but lost major points with me when I opend the menu and all I could smell was sweaty feet. Obviously the menus have been used quite often and wiped down with a damp cloth then left on out to rot! Overall decor was ok but made me feel like what else are they cutting corners on if you can't take pride in the menu's being presented.

Eh... lots to choose from in the area but fast lunch was tons of bento's to choose from for decent price.

Not my cup of tea
By DavidLee of Richmond, Vancouver (25 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 6:54pm [Dine in]

My first impression is that everyone from the boss to the chef to the waitress are all vietnamese, take it for what that's worth. Wouldn't matter to me if the food was good, but read on.

Tea was lukewarm at best and tasted very bland, almost to the point of boiled water.
Moving on to the important stuff, the food.
BLEH! Ordered a few kinds of sushi and wasn't going to risk ordering any more. The salmon was off-coloured, not pink, not red. Looked very dry like it was left outside for a while. There was barely any fatty belly in the Toro, more tuna than toro. The chop scallop was very dry and the seaweed was disgustingly soggy, sticky and warm.

I was debating with myself whether to get the Nabeyaki udon or Ramen. Should of went with the Udon but not sure if it would have been with better results anyway. The ramen tasted like plastic, no flavour at all and just a smorgasbord of vegetables that didn't look fresh. Zucchini was rock hard, broccoli was yellow, eggplant was black! Ick! I've had better from the instant bowl ramen.

I also got the saba, which didn't look anything like the picture, it was overcooked to the point of burnt and very dry, chunks of it were overly bitter as well.

I didn't finish any of the dishes. (which I rarely do)

Atmosphere was typical. I found it odd how they have traditional musical going on in the background AND they have the football game volume up as well. Doesn't mix.

Sorry but there's simply too many other places to choose from in the vicinity to ever have me wanting to come back here again.

Lunch is questionable

Husband and I were in the Japanese mood so we decided to try out this downtown Japanese restaurant for lunch. Well, everything doesn't seems to be what it is, let see where we should start.

Ambiance - The people who runs the restaurant are not Japanese, they are Cantonese probably from Hongkong because they have been continously playing Canton-Pop through out our lunch period.

Food - We both order a different Bento Box. The presentation was poor. The rolls were loose and the seaweeds are falling apart. Though the chicken teriyaki is acceptable.

Service - It's less than adequate, we have to hunt down the waitress to get us some tea, and it's not even busy at the time. I suggest the servers should be a lot more attentive to their patrons if they want more tips.

Conclusion - It was a lunch only so I was hoping they are a lot better during dinner time.

Me and my girlfriend tried this place one night recently to kill some time before going to a fundraiser. I had already had a cocktail or two before arriving at kimono, maybe this is why I thought the food was alright the first time. My friend order a bento box of sorts+shrimp gyoza. I order salmon sashimi, tempura appitizer, edamame and gomee. The food was good not great. The service was not bad, they refilled the tea when needed. I like the booths, they were cozy. Looked in the bathroom and it looked clean. All in all I was satisfied.
Now onto my second visit... Few days later my boyfriend and me were going to see a movie at scotiabank so I thought hey maybe he'll like to try it out. We went there and they sat us promply.I told him about my previous time there, was saying that it seemed clean compaired to some other sushi places I had been. We order our food, waitress brought out the miso soup. And as I was sipping my soup I saw something that I have never nor do I want to see ever again.... A mouse scurried under a closed door!!! Now I don't know if this type of thing is common in resturants but when my sushi came I didn't eat much of it even tho my boyfriend said not to worry, it all tasted gross ,I was disgusted and still am.

Kimono seems a fairly typical Japanese restaurant, if a bit generic upon entering the place.

The menu is large with an impressive selection of pretty much any Japanese food you could imagine wanting.

Joe and I ordered tako sunomono, tuna sashimi, an avacado roll and a rainbow roll. Everything was served very promptly by a friendly server.

The food itself was quite bland.

The sunomono had an orange slice in it (a nice touch) but the tako was cut into thin, wide and long strips and was unusually chewy (even for squid). The noodles were skimpy and wilted with indifferent blobs of seaweed floating in it.

The sashimi was wet and slimy in appearance and rather than being firm with the beautiful pink colour you'd expect, it was pale, sweaty and anemic looking. Not terribly tasty either.

The rolls were flavourless and uninspiring and are not worth mentioning further.

To add to this lacklustre experience, the music - at one point a terrible Spanish guitar remake of Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel - would be better suited to a tapas bar than a Japanese restaurant. The hockey game was also very audible giving us the impression we were at a sports bar.

Overall, though the service was prompt and friendly, the food was overpriced considering how boring it was and Kimono is a place best avoided as it's utterly forgettable anyway.
