Great steaks, a casual ambiance and friendly, very knowledgeable staff are the proud and reliable trademarks of The Keg Steakhouse & Bar.
I have to state for the record that I have never been a huge Keg fan in the past. You pretty much know what you're going to get and not much more. I was in for a surprise when I visited the Keg in Yaletown. I've been here a few times before and normally just have drinks or maybe an appetizer if I'm really hungry. I go for the patio which is absolutely amazing; worth every penny of the however many million they spent renovating it.
I was kind of hungry so I decided to get some dinner even though I'd already had a light dinner a few hours before. I ordered the sirloin Oscar with a twice baked potato. Imagine my surprise when the Oscar sauce came with a whopping 6 prawns and 4 scallops. They were cooked absolutely perfectly so they had to be thrown in there and not just the luck of the draw with the sauce. The asparagus in the sauce was perfectly crunchy as well. To top it off, the twice baked was incredible! I highly recommend you try it as your side. My only quibble was they left the skin on the roasted pepper. Overall though, an excellent meal for 30 bucks.
Normally I would rate the value at the Keg average, but considering the insane amount of seafood in the Oscar sauce, I have given it a boost to reflect that. The service was chophouse style, great, and what you'd expect at the Keg. One area they could improve is their beer selection. A couple more craft beers (not Granville Island) to complement the Brooklyn beers would be nice.
Overall, I had a great meal and will return. I definitely know what I am ordering!
Don't these servers know that if you show up at the table more then you'd sell more!
Service was not good. It was hard to get our servers attention, plates were not cleared and our table was cluttered with their big menus the entire time.
Show up to clear the plates and take the opportunity for us to order more. Yes there were six of us but leaving just a few menus would have been fine.
I wonder how the lady from THE REAL HOUSEWIVES FROM VANCOUVER found the service. She had a great table. Funny considering we arrived before here and felt shoved into a corner. Maybe it was oddy understandable because she is the ex wife of the owner.
We won't rush back even though we live in the same neighborhood.
Because it's in Yaletown I thought there might be something a little more special about the place. Our table was along a row of tables, no view, no real decor or special touches to notice, The place is not quite as "classy" as I expected. The food and drinks were very good, large portions, but the server apparently had no training. She kept reaching in front of us to pick up and put things down, although there was certainly room for her to do it properly. I don't know about other people, but that really annoys me when I'm trying to have a conversation. We have a waiter/waitress course here at VCC, so maybe management at the Keg should hire from there or "audition" the staff before they are hired.
The Keg- Yale Town Sept.27/2010
I have to write this follow up about my second trip to this Keg. Remember I was happy to discover this store that they are difference from all the other in term of décor and atmosphere? I though I have finally find a place for my Prime Rib and Steaks. What a disappointment! As usually I order my prime rib Med/R but it was served almost WD. The waitress only interest talking to themselves, completely disregard service to her customers. My first visit was very impressive about this place but my second visit change my mind. They are not consistent; you never know what you will get next time? I am going back to the Granville Island Keg or the Burnaby Keg. That's why these two Kegs are always very busy but the Yale town one was not busy today (Sunday, Sept.26/10 at 6:30pm dinner hour) the waitress only has 2 tables (2 and 3 persons in each table) to look after in her section. She should have amply of time to serve customers instead of talking to each other.
They opened this joint in time for the Olympic 2010 and it was a quick fix. Food was acceptable a year ago due to fast turn over and we were there not to linger but eat and go attend other activities in Yaletown. Now a year has gone by and it is the same old same old story. Waitresses are unattentive and they chit chat among themselves a lot. Prime rib portion has shrunken and again no point to order the 'Keg Size' as it just not worth the extra money. Overall the prime rib is luke warm (sitting on counter for too long), sirloin steak seems to be ok for what it is worth. This place is big and I have never seen it full house on the weekends after the Olympic. Parking seems to be a problem as Nelson is one way going South and tricky to turn West onto Hamilton etc. We parked a block away and walked and oddly enough kitchen staff (white uniforms and caps) were smoking in the corridor with the side door cracked open. Totally unprofessional and I really hope they wash their hands. I tip base on first value of food, then service but don't really know what is the problem with management they seem to hire 'dump blondes' at this location and the one in Granville Island. No need to flirt with us, give us good hot food and service and you will get good tips! Don't think we are coming back for a long time.
I absolutely trust this chain. I will say that it is a bit on the pricey side for dinner, but lunch is a lot cheaper. We were being treated. What I love about it is that you can go up to the bar, and get a variety of dishes, and then have a drink before the servers come around to seat you. The extra fun part here was this gorgeous waitress. Long hair! We loved our dishes. My absolute favourite was their ribeye...yummmm!!
Their meat was very good, and we came out of there very satisfied. I highly reccommend this place to anyone.
Talk about a meat market.... oh yeah, this place has steaks too.
Thursday -- time to celebrate the almost-weekend!
Hint: Book a meeting in your calendar so you can duck out of work discreetly... then run to grab an empty table!
Or to reserve your standing space at the bar.
I can't comment on the decor because all I saw were suits.
A gigantic crowd of suits...which can be fun, depending on your scene.
Anyways, the Keg is the happening place for an after work drink.
Appetizers are always good. The menu is extensive and you can't go wrong with nachos and calamari.
I enjoy dinners at the Keg, but I've never felt this location was actually for dining, more like hanging out, getting your drink on, and trying not to lose your Blackberry.
