The Keg – Granville Island
Glad to be back:
After my last experience with the Yaletown Keg ;( see review under Yaletown Keg second visit). I appreciate this Keg even more. The old says; a good restaurant must have the basic 3 elements; Good Food; Good Service and Good price. Lack any one of these elements will put that restaurant in a third place. All Kegs have good food and good price, but services are difference from one to the others. In this case I always received good service from this Keg in addition to their good food. It’s very consistence which you can depend on it every time.
I've dined at this Keg several times in the last year because I was unhappy with the prime rib at the Richmond Keg. Almost every time that I ate the prime rib, it was juicy, tasty and cooked how I liked it. The one time that it was overcooked and dry, I told the server about it when the bill came and she was genuinely concerned about my experience. She apologized for the problem and got the manager. The manager came over and took care of the bill for me. I gave the server a good tip for that and as I was walking out the server apologized to me again. The servers have always been attentive and come by a few times to see if you need anything. I also went this past summer when they had the lobsterfest. I got a 2 kg steamed lobster, was cooked how I like it, not undercooked and not overcooked or dry. The food is a bit pricey but worth it.
Tonight was a birthday dinner for myself and my girlfriend.
Our server seemed lost, forgetful and inattentive!! Feeling ignored on my birthday while at a dinner for my own birthday party does not leave a very good taste or impression on me.
My girlfriend asked for garlic butter to accompany the fresh sourdough bread, Did not receive it even after the server said "Right away!"
Our Caesar didn't have enough dressing and seemed a bit flat and dry
When our two main entrees came - a prime rib and filet mignon
My girlfriend's veggies were very cold upon arrival and when she finally got a second helping, the broccoli smelled quite fishy!!! Very surprising, very shocking... Food contamination? Foodsafe warning!!
It seemed that our food had been sitting for too long and NOTHING was steaming hot... it was lukewarm at best !!
We took photos of everything especially the over done, limp and soggy vegetables... Yellowing Broccoli is not visually appealing!!!
I asked for the addition of the dungeness crab while we first ordered our meals and we had to wait even longer while our server FINALLY put in the order....It was as if My order of dungeness crab was an afterthought... Very sad ! I would have liked to have both Prime Rib and Crab for dinner together!!!
We noticed that our server's attitude was much more bright and cheery to other tables and felt that our server gave mediocre service to ours. The long waits in between our dishes made our meals cold and flat...even after mentioning politely to our server... we still were ignored and felt we were looked down by our server for our polite manners.... "The Kitchen is busy she replied"..
No excuse.. I don't want to hear that the Kitchen is busy..... We were ahead of everyone and we were in the Keg at Granville Island at 4:20pm.. less than an hour after they had opened at 3:30pm on Tuesday evening before the dinner rush and guess what? I'm a PAYING customer!! It's too bad that Keg at Granville Island seems to favor large groups over single tables with two people in it!!
What, my money isn't good enough?? It felt like a fight to communicate with our server and it's a very sour taste in our mouths and stomachs to feel ignored especially on my birthday
I've got to Keg many times over 30 years, this is NOT the high standard of the Keg restaurants that I remember!!
We paid our bill and just walked out... no connection with our server because guess what??... our server was too busy yakking with other waitstaff!
Needless to say, my girlfriend is very unhappy and disappointed and upon leaving the Keg at Granville Island proceeded to call all her friends and talk about our sad birthday dinner
You have been warned!!!! Diner Beware of Keg at Granville Island
I'm a keg guy. I've been to the Keg in Langley, Maple Ridge, Vancouver and now the one on Granville Island.
Service was great, but the food... somehow it was off. I started with the baked garlic shrimp and it somehow tasted different than before. It was good, but seemed different.
I had the Sirloin Oscar. The steak was good but the sauce was off too... I love the sirloin oscar but for some reason that night I didn't enjoy it like I usually do.
Maybe it was me and my tastebuds are off... or maybe it was the fact that the seat smelled like an old boat. I don't know what it was but i was a tad dissapointed... and this is coming from someone who doesn't get dissapointed very easily.
After going to the Burnaby location multiple times, the food was disappointing. My NY steak was overcooked, but they quickly changed it. Except too quickly, because the replacement was too raw. The prime rib was up to par with the other chain restaurants.
Trained, polite and knowledgeable. Our waitress checked up on us a couple times. After I said my steak wasn't cooked properly, the manager came to apologize and offered us a free dessert.
Standard prices for a steakhouse. $34 for a 14oz NY steak and $21 for a 8 oz prime rib.
Well decorated, enough privacy but not isolated. A little old but the mood was welcoming. Nice and clean washrooms.
Fair quality, but other locations are better.
We had a Father's day dinner at the Keg. The prices of the entrees were slightly over priced for what we ate. I don't mind paying if the food is prepared well. The chicken and seafood entree I had was extremely salty. Someone else had the Teriyaki chicken entree which was dry and overcooked. A couple of the others in my party had the prime rib dinner which included a salad, vegetables and rice. They commented that the prime rib was satisfactory. It seems the best deal here is to order one of the complete dinners but unfortunately they only include beef and not chicken or seafood. I guess this is to be expected as this is a steakhouse. The service was nothing to complain about. Our waitress was polite and prompt with our requests.
My last visit here with my boyfriend was last night. Our steaks were cooked just the way we liked them. My boyfriend ordered the bacon wrapped filet and I ordered the teriyaki sirloin. I also ordered a skewer of prawns to go with my steak. I was expecting your regular size prawns. Nooo... these were jumbo prawns! They were very good, cooked well and not over cooked. We also ordered a side of asparagus, which wasn't so great. The ends weren't trimmed, so they were woody and stringy. They didn't have much flavour either. But that was okay, because our steak dinners were more than enough. The service was great. Our server was friendly and prompt. We've never had bad service or a bad experience with our dinners here. This place is on our regular rotation of restaurants when we're craving steak.
This is a prime location hence the management does not give a f*** for the business. Waitresses are just unprofessional dummies trying to flirt and make extra tips. The problem is if you are not a big group and into the alcoholic beverages prior to a sitting then you are bound to have lousy service.
I have always thought the Keg serves the best Prime Ribs but that was back in the 80s (EXPO era). Now the portion has strunken and the meat is consistantly luke warm. I personally do not think it is the cook's fault. The food is sitting on the counter waiting for the servers to pick them up but if they are too lazy chatting among themselves or just absent minded what else can you expect?
Am sure there are other restaurants have better beef dishes I just have to find them one day.
I’ve often walked by this Keg when I visit Granville Island and wasn’t particularly excited about a dinner outing with friends at this restaurant. By all appearances from the outside it looks like a surfer hangout, so it was a pleasant surprise at how polished the actual dinning area is on the main floor, more like the other Keg Restaurants. The service was prompt and the serving staff were pleasant and attentive from beginning to end. My steak was done a perfect medium-rare and no one was disappointed. Also, the ahi tuna appetizer with a wasabi-mushroom reduction was delicious though slightly overcooked but not so much so as to disappoint. The pricing is what one would expect for a steak house. A great place for a steak dinner with friends when Granville Island is the destination.
When we lived in Vancouver about 13 years ago we visited the Granville Island Keg practically every weekend. Since we have moved to Mexico City we visit every time we come back to Vancouver ( almost every 2 years) we have NEVER had a bad experience in this restaurant in over 23 years.........
Unbelievable steakhouse -- the food was unbelievable. First I started with home-made Caesar Salad with tomato extras. The portion was rather large and it could be shared by 2 people. For the main course, I had the flat-Keg strip loin and I shared this with my friend she shared ribeye -- they were able to cut both steaks so we could share. I've never tasted steak like this before! Super rich in taste. They offered different sauces as compliments. The fries and string beans were great as well. The ambience is great for couples, group of friends, and it is very modern. And great view. One last thing -- the service was spectacular -- very helpful and informative and super nice!
We have dined here multiple times, but this time around I tried the lobster. Liked it and sure will return for that.
Quite a bit of seating provided. Some say the burger's nice too. Steak is not bad too.
Window seating is fine as you get to watch the people go by.
