New York style Jewish deli. Corn beef, pastrami, lox and bagels etc. etc. without the attitude and the shouting. Small, no frills, wholesome food.
Took my family for some deli sandwich. As usual the sandwichs were good! Our waitress was excellent. All was good till I went to pay the check at the cashier. I have already left a nice portion tip for our waitress as her service was excellent. Being in the food industry when I was younger, taught me how to tip! When I got to the cashier at the front door, I already had exact payment for my bill and left the tip at the table for our waitress. The cashier at the door saw that I had exact amount for the bill, her comment was "Your waitress you thank you for the change" mean I didn't leave anything. If you go and check the table and open your eyes, you can see that there was a tip! I would not recommand anyone after this incident especially with comments like that. Doesn;t matter how good the food is, but to take insults like that, FORGET IT!
My first experience at Kaplan's was very pleasant. I had intended to just buy a loaf of their rye, which is one of the best in Vancouver, but the cashier was so nice that my friend and I decided to stay for early lunch.
Food: We ordered the Montreal Smoked ham sandwich, which came with a small coleslaw and a pickle. The meat was tasty and had a nice sweet undertone. We enjoyed this simple sandwich that we decided to come back the following week (Sunday). On that day, the restaurant opened ten minutes later and the server was REALLY RUDE. We decided to buy bread before we dined, since the server was just starting to set up anyway. However, she gave us a funny look and said "the bread isn't going to go anywhere, buy it later." It was really a strange comment to make to patrons. Don't you want business? It all went downhill from there, she was so rude. No eye contact. Impatient as soon as we sat down. We cancelled our food order as a result, but not before she charged us for untouched coffee at $5.oo. We complained to the waitress, but it was not very satisfying. It turns out this incredibly rude waitress is the owner;s daughter and in the words of the cashier, she is treated differently from other workers. What a shame. kaplan's lost repeat customers. We will only go there for bread.
While rushing to leave Vancouver before the dreaded post 2:30pm rush hour we were torn between leaving empty handed and hungry and finding a convienant place to grab some satisfying lunch. We found Kaplans as we turned southbound on oak street on our hurried exit freeway bound.
Upon entering Kaplans we felt immediately at home and found our needs readily and courteously attended to. We quickly decided on the hot smoked meat sandwich on caraway rye bread with the signature Kaplans pickles on the side. Never regretting our choice it left me thankful that the clerk suggested the Large Sandwich without even waiting to see if we agreed. Certainly we did agree and the sandwich was mouthwatering and delicious.
While waiting for our order we made a quick sweep of the adjacent shelves and coolers grabing all the items we love and find greatly lacking in Chilliwack. Potatoe Knishes, Matzo Ball mixture,Horse Radish and many more things were grabbed in the short time we waited. The only disappointing item we found was the white bread bagels we bought. The clerk went way out of her way to find them for us and I have to give her an A plus on her effort to accomadate our demand. I would like to say those were not bagles although they appeared to be the right shape and have poppy seeds on them. They were not the bagles we know and love. They were not Kettle boiled and wood fire baked as they should be. Perhaps you should find a new source for these. We look forward to our next visit andhopeyou do decide to get some real bagels so we can one stop shop at your deli.
We ate here awhile ago. My father told us about it and we were glad we went there. It reminded me of the deli's in Montreal. It's a regular no fancy sandwhich and deli. We had a variety of things from matza ball soup to lox bagels, to latkas, etc. The food wasn't gourmet, but it was yummy and filling.
The whole place gave us an old fashioned homey feel. The servers were nice. There is also a sandwhich bar and other goodies where you can do take out.
Yummy
I've been frequenting this place since I was a kid.
It's changed hands a few times since Kaplan passed on.
Food is a bit pricey but hey, where can you get a great CB or MSM sandwich in the area of Oakridge, Kerridale??
We've had lunch in the place many times. Service is ok - no complaints ~ food is good. Decor is updated and as far as I'm concerned, food over decor is fine with us.
These days, we usually order take out. We normally oder ths sandwiches for lunch. Front end staff, including Mrs. V, are always friendly. Their sandwiches come in two sizes - regular and hungry size. The regular is more than enough for those looking for a good lunch. Their pickles (included in the sandwich) are great.
On a side note, the staff doesn't smile much (although they can if you coax it out of them with some humor...) but they are friendly.
If you want an amazing cinnamon bun that will leave your mouth watering...head on over to Kaplan's! The middle is the best part, of course, and get it without raisons. There is not much else there that compares to a NY Deli, which is surprising given who the owner is - but it's still the best that Vancouver's got, for the meantime anyway. Bon appetite!
You can dine in or take out. Sandwiches are made to order according to what you specify. The food is not typical of a supermarket style deli. For example, you can order real roast kosher turkey carved from the bird or hot beef brisket prepared in house. A personal favorite is the simple coleslaw dressed with sweet vinegar.
After living in Toronto for 10 years, I was so eager to try a Jewish Deli. My friend loved her Corn beef. I enjoyed my matza ball soup, but the rare roast beef on rye was so dry I would not swollow it nor could I finish it. I was disappointed. However I will go back to try some other things on the menu.
Kaplan's is the real deal - if you like true authentic east coast deli style food then come here - really good quality meat (much better than the greasy bbq houses sprouting up across town) - not cheap but not expensive - fair prices, hard-working service, and enjoyable food!
Being a huge fan of jewish deli/bakery fare, I just had to try Kaplan's. It exceeded my expectations. The corned beef sandwich was tasty, not overly salty like what you find in other places. And the rugelachs were among the best I'd had: crunchy (if you like them that way) and tasty. Try the cinammon-raisin or the apricot.
