Kams has an extensive selection of Chinese food accompanied by a wonderful bakery.
I took my wife for a quick bite on a Sunday afternoon, and ended up in Kam's. We shared an order of Fuzhou fried rice, and I had an iced coffee. Both were pretty good, but the rice was nothing special despite the menu claims that I was enjoying a 'house specialty'.
The ambience was nice and the place was clean. The washroom needed a bit of attention though. The service could have been a bit quicker, but there was only one person on duty serving customers. The bakery is terrific though, and I recommend it. The best thing about the restaurant is that it is next to the bakery.
Not bad, but nothing special.
This restaurant has probably been here since forever, but only until recently, I never knew it existed - almost hidden in between various shops along Main Street. This place is a good stop for cheap breakfast - you'll get the usual chinese cafe style breakfast (complete with bun, egg and meat, and a noodle soup of some sort) without lightening your wallet too much.
The food quality here isn't as good as some of the other well-known cafes in town, but it's still very good value. However, in this neighbourhood, you can probably find a better deal elsewhere - it just depends on what your tastebuds are craving.
Service was good, and the place is bigger than it looks from the outside. However, it can get really busy, especially when the weekend lunch crowd after ballet classes next door let out.
Also, I think it's time for a restaurant make-over for Kams, as the interior is very old and dated.
Food: The minced beef friend rice was alright. The century egg pastry however, was really gross and there was only a TINY piece of century egg in it. Nothing special.
Service: Once again, nothing special. They gave me a wrong item (from the bakery) so they lose points for that.
I will probably return.
If I ever need some real comfort food, or I have a bit of a stomach ache. I always head over to Kam's and have their vermicelli with shredded pork and preserved vegetables. It' s so yummy, and the value is fantastic! It's not much in the way of ambiance, but it's a cheap Chinese restaurant, so I don't think that's a huge concern of theirs. I happen to like, it though: it's straightforward and no-nonsense, and I've converted a few people to their noodles and tuna sandwiches now!
I went to Kam's for lunch today. It's a busy little restaurant next to the bakery, full with Chinese people. Good sign, right?
Unfortunately the food wasn't very good. I had the "A" lunch special. Soup of the day was some kind of egg swirl. Small and salty without much taste. The fried rice was pretty good with a reasonable amount of shrimp. The deep-fried lemon chicken was on the verge of being undercooked. I ate it, but one second less in that fryer and it would have been a send back. Not particularly tasty, and seeing that pinkness before each bite didn't help. No stomachache or salmonella yet, but I just finished 20 minutes ago. There's still time. The iced tea was so sweet with some other sort of sharp taste it was undrinkable. And I don't think I've ever not finished a drink before.
The Congee House is right around the corner and much better in every way. Unfortunately they don't have lunch specials, but maybe that's a good thing. Sure, it'll cost you a buck more, but it's well worth it. There are a couple of other Chinese places with specials across the street and at least one of the, I forget the name, is better and cheaper!
The service was minimal. I couldn't understand the waitress when she asked about what kind of tea, so I just went with "yes, that one". And I'm used to people with strong accents. This was pretty extreme. I had to get up to go and pay and still had to wait at the till. They charged me $8.70 although I swear the menu said $7.25. I just paid, left a buck tip not wanting to fight it, already knowing I'd never be back. Too bad because the bakery is not bad and dirt cheap. But I got a cold curry bun there last time after they underheated it and the mixed (i.e. mystery) meat bun is not recommended.
Ambiance? Same as most restaurants of this type with posters older than Mao, but par for the course except for the lack of light. Brighten it up! People will enjoy it more.
I love this place for their cakes! They make beautiful fresh fruit cakes. They are perfect for after a birthday dinner, light, tasty and stunning to look at. Staff is helpful though English is not the 1st language of many/most of the employees and it is best to bring your patience and a smile. I highly recommend them to all my friends!
Kam's bakery is a good place to eat. I love their baked seafood rice though the portion has gotten smaller over time.
Their price range is usually $6-8 per meal which includes a drink as well. The service is normal and its always been a good way to pass time trying to do charades with the chinese waitresses when ordering your food.
There is a bakery located in the restaurant as well and its pretty good. The ambiance is okay. I love this place!
Best Baked Porkchop on Rice that I have eaten in Vancouver. I often find that when I order baked porkchop on ice at other places the pork has a very "funky" taste to it like it is on the verge of being rotten. The baked porkchop on rice at Kam's does not suffer from this. Kam's also has a quite delightful fried beef noodle and Shanghai noodle. As for drinks I always opt for their Hong Kong coffee/tea cold as it is particularly refreshing.The ambiance at Kam's is interesting to say the least. The walls are brightly colored and have an interesting texture and they at least for a while had a pair of small dinosaur skeleton replicas. The service is alright as a "White Girl" it can be difficult to communicate with the waitresses they all seem to have a lot of difficulty with Snglish so having a Canto Chinese boyfriend helps. Don't let the issues with communicating ruin Kam's for you the waitresses can seem abrasive but I think they really do try their best to understand. If all else fails just point to what you want on the menu. Over all Kam's is a good place with good food.
The restaurant has been here forever. I remember coming here when I was a kid and I always run over to the bakery side to choose my dessert when my parents are eating at the restaurant side. Up till today I still think their baked pork chop on rice is the best in town! I also really like the shredded pork vermicelli with chicken broth. I recently ordered a fresh mango cake from them for my girl friends birthday, and I could say that their cakes are the best in Vancouver! It was the best fresh mango cake I've ever had. The sponge cake was moist and spongy. The cake was very light and was not too sweet. It was perfect! The fresh mango cake is a must try!
Food: The food here is excellent! Best Cakes in Town! Best Chinese bakeries!
Service: The service I would say needs a bit of improvement. The waitresses don't speak very well English and getting what i want for my order took a bit of time. But overall they were very kind!
Value: The price can't get any better for what you are getting. Comparing with other bakeries and cafe's I think their pricing is very fair and reasonable.
Ambiance: The place is clean and has good lighting. I really like the design of the bar on the restaurant side.
Will definitely come here for lunch again, and will for sure order my next birthday cake here!
Saying the food is terrible would be a huge understatement.
The beef, provided it is actually a real beef, taste like some cheap rubber and the noodles doesn’t have any taste at all.
That was the worst food I ever ate in my life, and that’s why it was thrown directly to the garbage immediately after I left the restaurant.
The service is slow and lousy even when the place is empty and the restaurant itself stink with very bad smell.
