Kai Sushi is a Japanese restaurant offering a menu of sushi and sashimi dishes as well other traditional Japanese dishes prepared and presented with a creative twist.
We dined here for the first time on Friday. Kai Sushi does not take reservations but we didn't need to wait when we got there at around 7:30. We had a look at the menu beforehand and we got the impression it was going to be a place for high-quality sushi in Vancouver.
We had the tuna tataki, bacon & scallop roll, chicken (add asparagus) roll and 2 pieces of ahi tuna nigiri. For two people, our bill was already $47. The specialty rolls are all >$10 but only 6 small pieces. Though the rolls were good, we didn't believe it justified about $2/piece. The ahi tuna nigiri and tuna tataki were nice too, but nothing to wow over.
I really wanted to like this place but I don't think I'll be coming back.
Food is great, so is the service; very attentive...almost over the top as they are a new and small place trying to make a good reputation for themselves (so nice to see sincere good service). Value is pretty good if you stick to basic stuff (california rolls etc) but some of their specialty rolls are pretty pricey (albeit super tasty).
Crab motoyaki is so delicious it's out of control. Also try the spicy tuna sashimi: they have both albacore and ahi, and while I haven't yet splurged for the ahi, the albacore is crazy good.
