My first trip to Jonker . . .

I've walked by this restaurant many times and finally decided to give it a try.

I called ahead to ask about the lunch specials and placed an order for pick up.

For $8.50 I ordered the Nasi Jambori. On the phone I was told by the lady it was a dish of beef rendang, chicken curry, prawn sambal and egg.
I also got an order for some Roti.

Upon pick up, the guy who I believe was the owner greeted me promptly with a big smile, my order waiting. He added some mint chocolates which was a nice touch.

I got home, ready to dig in!
Now, I'm unsure if the prawns go missing when the Nasi Jambori is served at lunch but they weren't there! Disappointing because I was told over the phone it was indeed included in the meal.
The beef was delicious and extremely tender with an interesting hint of sweetness.
The chicken curry was ok but the chicken itself was overcooked and very dry.
The food was spicy with the dollop of hot sauce on the side. I liked that.
I'm not used to the type of roti I tasted. I'm only familiar with the roti of the east and west indies. This was an interesting take..light and flakey, a nice side.

Overall, I would likely try Jonker Street again for the beef rendang and hope that the chicken satay is more tender than the curry. Although...I'd personally return mainly for the location. I've heard from friends (some Malaysian) that I should make my way to Banana Leaf for Malaysian cuisine.

Ordered Chicken Satay, Roti Canai, Nyonya Laksa and Chow Kuey Teow. THey were all very, very average. Might be due to high expectation from those high praises in previous reviews. I had tasted Malaysian food in Melacca, as well as most cities in Malaysia and I can tell you that they don't evwn come close as far as for those food we ordered. I would give it another shot though...next time I'll try the Beef Rendang.

Based on the reviews given, we were curious to sample the food at Jonkers.
Being a 'peranakan' and foodie, we were pleasantly surprised that the quality of food at this outlet surpassed that one could find in Singapore or Malaysia particularly, the prawn noodles, roti canai and the chilli crab. Therefore, I would strongly recommend anyone who wishes to relish authetic Malaysian food.

Restaurant is small and affords the staff and owner were very friendly and helpful.

I thought I 'd give it a try when I first drove by and saw the restaurant sign that says Malaysian Cuisine. I am glad I did. Unbelievable food. Absolutely authentic Malaysian food cooked by a Malaysian guy named Charles. (co-owner). The other owner is Thomas. I was greeted by him with a warm kindness that just makes you want to come back to that restaurant. The Beef Rendang is to die for. By far the best I have tasted in this country. I do know cause I dine out approximately 6 nights per week (cause my wife is too lazy to cook...............just kidding,.....I meant busy)and have tried all the Malaysian restaurants in the lower mainland. Hokkien Mee is my favourite. Made exactly like how it should be made on the hawker streets in KL. Make sure you ask for the original KL style Hokkien Mee. Overall, if you have not tried this restaurant, DO IT, you will love the service and most of all, the food.

Went to Jonker Street with a couple of friends from Malaysian Club in UBC. Tried some vege noodles and it was authentic and nice. The service was superb. Greeted by the owner warmly and we had a little talk. Overall, it's a nice restaurant

The food and service, I must say, was excellent. The owner was very friendly and the staff was very courteous. The pricing for the restaurant is very reasonable, considering it is located in Yaletown. In the end, I was very satisfied with this restaurant.

I started off with the Chicken Satay and it was very tender, and the peanut sauce really complimented the dish.

I ordered the Nasi Jambori as my main, and it did not disappoint. It came with some Prawn Sambal, Chicken Curry, Beef Rendang and a side salad, it is definitely a dish I would recommend for newcomers to try.

Overall, I think this is the best Malaysian restaurant I have been to. Prima Taste and Tropicana do not compare to the quality of the food served here.

Home-cooked Malaysian

Having been to Malacca (home of the REAL Jonker Street) I was curious as to how the cuisine of this new Vancouver restaurant stacks up against the ORIGINAL. I have tried all the appetizers and found them to be satisfactory Malay taste. Of the soups, the Nonya Laksa is by far the most excellent! I will mark this as "my Laksa restaurant".

Of the main course meat and seafood dishes I have tried, I thought the prawn sambal and beef rendang are excellent. There is hardly any better beef rendang in Vancouver. Since I have been disappointed by too many Malaysian restaurants here, I will also mark this place as "my beef rendang restaurant."

Saving the best for last, try the bah kut teh served every 3rd week (check with restaurant). It is worth cutting work early to try - trust me.

Overall, the place is immaculate clean and the staff, especially the owner, give a good vibration. The place is actually a little piece of the original Jonker Street right here in our town...

My family & I tried this place once and found it welcoming. The owner makes an effort to talk to each customer.
Food was alright, the satay was good but on the salty side. The nasi jambori was tasty and so was the chicken curry.
Good customer service and very clean restrooms. Will recommend this place as it's definitely worth a try.

After reading about Jonker Street in the Georgia Straight a couple of months ago, I had to stop in and give it a try.

Ordered the char kway teow and the chicken satay. The satay was quite good, but I was disappointed with the char kway teow. The prawns seemed overcooked, although the flavors seemed to be about right.

The server was prompt and courteous. Room is small but nice with lots of deep red, brown and black.

My friends and I went to Jonker Street for dinner one Saturday evening and we were warmly greeted by its friendly owner/host. He was very personable and took the time to explain the different dishes, as well as share information about Malaysia. He recommended the roti, satay, beef rendang/chicken curry combo, and a local Malaysian fried noodle dish.

I appreciated the freshness of the roti and noticed that it was not oily compared to the roti of other restaurants. The satay was pretty good too. The only dish I did not like was the beef rendang, which was very dry and was not tender. I like the sauce of the chicken curry. Since one of our friends could not eat seafood, the owner accomodated this dietary restriction by not including shrimp in the noodles. That was a nice touch. We had some refreshing calamansi juice to drink.

What I like about the food at Jonker Street is that it's not greasy (even the fried noodles!). I feel that I'm eating a home-cooked meal - healthy, not a lot of salt and tasty enough.

When I find myself in the area, I would definitely go back to Jonker Street.

Not sure why, but just ... ok

We've been there 3 times now. Each time was good, but for some reason never felt stunning.
Place is standard Yaletown modern-type decor, don't expect a "Malaysian style" theme.

Service has always been decent and friendly, nothing much to say about it.

The food...hmmm...not sure why but there's not much to complain about, but no spark either. Always felt a little "heavy" afterwards so perhaps they use a lot of lard (trans-fat?;-) in their cooking.
The biggest disappointment is that they are always serving single-combo servings, which is very unusual for Asian places. Not a great place for sharing. The second disappointment is that there is nothing really "special" on the menu and it's not that varied either.

If you have a craving, and there's only 1 or 2 of you, then you might want to hit this place. Otherwise, i think we'd prefer to walk a few blocks and eat at Prima Taste instead.
