Tried something different....It was good, but only for special occasions

Submitted Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 8:31pm [Dine in]

I had graduated on Friday, and I came here with 2 of my friends after the ceremony and bowling. I originally wanted to go to Denny's in Richmond as they are 24/7 but found out this place is opened until 2:00 in the morning on Fridays, so we came here.

Our waitress was very friendly, and made me feel special that it was graduation day for me (don't know how she managed to, but she did) I had a hambuger and fries which were delicious. can't remember what my friend had for her entree, but we shared some buffalo wings (which were amazingly good) and the other friend just had beer.

Seeing how it was graduation day, I had a Bellini as well, which was ok, but I would rather have a bellini from Milestone's any day

The ambiance was a little dark for me......I would rather have gone somewhere where there was better lighting (but eh?)

I think however, it is a little too expensive compared to restaurants like Milestones and Earls. I mean my burger cost $14......Yes, I know it's not Denny's, but even Milestone's is like $10 or $11 for a plain burger. I guess they have some reason for making it pricer (location? don't know)

I guess I don't mind coming here once every so often, but I can get the same thing at Milestones for cheaper.

I've gone to Joey's quite a few times the past couple of years and have been getting more and more disappointed every time. I was disappointed that my friend wanted his going away party there, so I pre-ate my own steak at the boyfriends, and we had dessert as well beforehand. We got there, had our first couple of drinks (which never disappointed me), and some of the people at our group ordered steak with fried mashed potatoes. Me and my man ordered a side order and OMGOSH were they ever tasty tasty tasty!!!!! I will head back to Joeys again soon soley for some artery clogging goodness that are the fried mashed potatoes. Our server handled us quite well, considering it was a group of 25+ going in and out and quite a few of us were heavy drinking. Oh, ya he was a guy, and a total babe too. Nice change, that's what I like about downtown, a great deal of servers are sexy men, but he was dressed nicely and quite professional, even though he seemed a little new. My last mojito though, I ordered after paying the bill the first time because we had a delayed leaving, was odd tasting. They didn't muddle the mint, so the flavour wasn't that infused and they used blueberry vodka instead of rum (like I said, last mojito I wasn't exactly looking at ingredients). Anyways, don't get that drink. I got it for free though because 20 people from my party busied up the bartender with shot demands which was great. It took forever, even according to the sober bf so.

Thanks for the good time Joey's, now I'll revisit other locations and pray that the rest of the visits will be par with this one:)

The power lunch crowd

This location is the most recent Joey's visit, and the most hip of them all. The design itself is all Downtown influenced and is void of almost any resemblence of the comfortable feel-good Coquitlam location. In spite of this, the style is first rate.

While the ambience draws you in, the food portion of the restaurant seems overshadowed by the drinks and wine selection (at least that is what the decor reveals to me). The food is consistent across the board but I wouldn't consider this their bread and butter location. A soup and salad, 2 sirloins and the kobe pasta among a list of sides made for a good, but not so memorable meal. The egg wrapped mash potatoes were an interesting touch but the kobe meatballs in the spaghetti were disappointing. As a chain restaurant however, consistency is number one and seems they've pretty much nailed it on the head.

One waitress tended to us the entire ordeal. While friendly and completely on the ball I sensed a bit of awkwardness on her part, but what do I know.

While this reincarnation is the norm now for our fair city, this Joey's is completely void of it's original character. You're really here to be seen.

Definitely worth the trek, this place has great food! Super busy, and somewhat small for the popularity, so don't expect a table during the dinner rush, at least not without a wait, on a weekend. We ordered steak and wines for dinner, and were not at all disappointed! Not only is the meat perfectly marinated and oiled, but it has so much flavour with a bit of heat, unlike most steaks where you only taste the grease. The waitress was bombastic blonde and a dream but so is my girlfriend har har.

Not bad but could be much better

Food: had 2 lunches here in 2 days and everyone on both days seemed to enjoy their meals. Had the med grill burger which I thought was quite good. Portion size isn't bad for what you get, especially downtown when a lot of the eateries inflate prices but have no substance.

Service: Inconsistent. The first day, we had a guy who was fast but we didn't understand a word he was saying - speak up and stop slurring your words! Glasses were disgustingly dirty as well - food stuck all over them and lip marks still present and after having to change 2 of our glasses, he just changed them all which is good. We were in and out in no time. Second time in was atrocious. We were two tables, sitting separately and food was arriving inconsistently, bills were mixed up, ppl were charged for things they didn't order - just a mess overall. Our server was terrible and she seemed flustered despite our tables being quite patient. We ended up being 30 min late since our bills took 25 min to sort! In the end, one of the hostesses gave one of my dining compadres a $15 gc but still not enough for the terrible service.

Ambiance: Beautiful restaurant with very comfortable booths. Love the digital picture frames with rotating pics. Bar looks amazing despite not being seated in that area. Washrooms were very nice and clean.

I would return if I were in the area but if I get that one server again, I'm hightailing it out of there! Be careful of the water glasses and make sure you have time to eat lunch because an hour lunch can easily turn into 1.5 to 2 hours!

Little flavour & loud

I've heard about Joey's and they opened a new location in Downtown. I decided to try it, and you get hit with loud music and found it to be disorganized. I wish in some way, I sat in the lounge with TV's and had colour, but the dining area was boring. I ordered something easy, Cheese burger with fries, but the burger lacked flavour, over drenched with this mayo type sauce. I couldn't believe the pencil thin fries that weren't cooked & tons of salt. Although my waitress was friendly, she kept asking me how my food was, with a full mouth, so I couldn't answer.
I kept seeing interviews being done and the managers sitting in a booth making floor charts, when they could be talking with their guest.
If you like loud music, this is the place to go and I would suggest the lounge, since its better decorated.

Don't order the Lobster Grilled Cheese
By cherrybomb143 of Surrey, bc (193 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, April 10, 2009 - 8:23pm [Dine in]

Came here for a weekday lunch with some coworkers. Joey's has a nice room and sleek, elegant yet casual decor. Service was good, no complaints.

The only issue was the lobster grilled cheese I ordered was extremely disappointing. 4 TINY finger sandwiches with a bowl of mcdonald's-esque fries. Actually, I picked out 2 burnt (black) fries. The lobster in the grilled cheese was non-existent and I had to look for it only to find a few slivers of canned lobster meat among the way too overpowering cheese. The only taste was grease and salt. For Joey's, especially this location, I expected a little better.

The food and the service are a little behind the location and the ambiance.

I went to Joey's for lunch with a group for lunch. Even though we arrived slightly before noon, there was already a line waiting for seating. We were offered some nice samples of drinks (a lychee ice tea) and a sample of one of the day's feature dish (lobster ravioli).

I ordered the club med sandwich, substituting the fries with green salad. Our group ordered a plate of the habachi wings as an shared appetizer.

The wings were very spicy and tasty.

The sandwich and salad were pretty good.

Points lost for what seemed like a slow lunch service.

Very good place to eat and order wine after work. I will definetly go back and co-workers agree. The staff was sexy yet not stuck up, which was very entertaining. The restaurant is big but has a cozy feel and was very relaxing. Great place to spend any evening of the week. Order: They serve only the finest beverages and wines at reasonable prices compared to other chains in Vancouver or Yaletown. The staff was courteous, fast and very good looking.

Visiting friends in Vancouver last week and have to say that at least Vancouver has one thing going for it and that is a good chain of restaurants with the full package. First the food was good. Nothing too spicy or weird. Good steak, good fish and reasonable portions. The scotch was not too expensive. The restaurant was my friend's suggestion and we were skeptical because these chains have odd food on occasion but not here. The decoration was modern but clean. The waitress were salt of the earth. Wow do we need some of these in Calgary. The short black dresses make me feel like I am having a good time. Good food, good scotch and good waitstaff. We will return next year for sure.

Joey's got the best lobster tail!
By JooJoo of East Vancouver (82 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 7:33pm [Dine in]

I have always loved Joey for the lobster tail and sirloin steak until they took it off the menu in the Coquitlam location and made it seasonal. I was at the Joey's on Burrard one night and they brought it back to this location! I was really excited, their lobster tail was always fresh, tender and perfectly cooked. The Asian inspired skewer appetizer was absolutely delicious, we chose the beef, chicken and shrimp combination and all of them were cooked to perfection. The calamari portion was enough for 4 to share and very yummy! The butter chicken was creamy and great with rice. The saba grilled fish was very creatively grilled with spices, it was one of the best fish dish I've ever had! Consistent quality and taste, great food, and nice ambiance!

Meh-ness all around

Submitted Saturday, June 13, 2009 - 12:02am [Dine in]

My family and I went here for dinner last week. We ordered:

- Club Med (chicken sandwich): there was a funky burnt chemical taste to the chicken, and not in a tasty caramelized burnt kind of way.....
- Ahi Tuna Salad: which was supposed to have fresh ripe mangoes (3 TINY small cubes in all), the tuna was cooked well- seared rare, but was a little too peppery for my taste; very good vinaigrette however
- Rotisserie Chicken: half a chicken- very tasty, at around $18 it better be
- Chicken Souvlaki Wrap: good portion; solid souvlaki flavour
- Seafood Sicilian Pesto Linguine: had a good spice to it; well portioned; could have used more seafood!

The waiter was a little obnoxious. We took awhile deciding as it is a rather extensive menu, however, he took so long to get back to us and take our order. He seemed to be trying too hard to be funny and entertaining and just appeared awkward, and ANNOYING. For those of you who like chatting with your servers for a good amount of time, and interrupting your dinner to ask 'how everything is' you'd love it here. I also hate it when waiters "remember" to refill our waters when we've already finished eating!

The ambiance was also a little too noisy with the bar in the next hall.

Their drinks menu is a good read. Cracks me up every time.

I've been to the other "Joey" and this one is great too.

I like to call these restaurants LBDs (Little Black Dress) because the servers are always in black dresses/short skirts. And this is why I come and this is why I tip more. My (female) ex-coworkers gets a kick out of it. I just like the friendly faces and eye candy. Anyway, I'd feel bad for the loser that ends up buying drinks here.... kinda steep... unless the winner ends up liking the daily special.

FYI, Bellinis are special. Mmmmm!

Very Suprised For a Late Lunch

Submitted Tuesday, June 1, 2010 - 5:58pm [Dine in]

Went there for a late lunch around 3 o clock today. was very surprised the waitresses are very friendly and very pretty, service was excellent. They also came to the table for a quality check of the food, i thought this palce was overrated, but the food was the decent. Our waitress was very nice, we all had entrees no appies. i ordered the ahi tuna burger or sandwich, which was with onion rings and a tomato kind of relish. it was very tasty and a very large portion, i would say one of the best sandwiches i have ever eaten in any other restaurants. example milestones, earls, cactus etc, i would say this is one of the best chains, I'm pretty sure this is the highest of quality of chain related food. Also my friends had the chicken club and Alfredo all looked good, except the alfredo looked a little small, but all pasta's in restaurants are pretty small plate size. All in all a good dining experience if your looking for something fast good and upscale come to joeys.

Submitted Thursday, April 16, 2009 - 10:47pm [Dine in]

I came here last week with a couple of my friends and that we ordered some sliders and flatbread to start. The sliders were very simple and not worth ordering again in future. The flatbread has some chicked with some kind red indian marinade or sth, the taste is pretty different, the bread itself is a little cruncy which is good. We then ordered beef dip and lobster cheese sandwich. The beef dip has the regular onion and some beef of course, the sauce is pretty normal, nothing really interesting. The lobster sandwich got barely any lobster in it,but it's got tonnes of cheese which made up a little for the teeny tiny bit of lobster. The ambiance is pretty casual, we were seated in the individual sofa and it was pretty comfy. The service was a little lacking that day, maybe because of so many tables yet I only noticed 2 servers. I don't think i'll come back next time (unless of course my friends wanna come here) just coz the food is pretty common with nothing special.

I've been to this location a couple of times. It's your basic downtown Earls/Milestones/Cactus Club. The inside is quite nice, however the street appearance is nothing more than bland with a cheap looking screenprinted sign outside.

I've had the fish tacos which were actually really good. The only reason I've rated the food a 3. Yesterday I had the club med sandwhich with green salad. The bun was a couple of days old, definitely not fresh, however I do always enjoy their green salad with feta and dried cranberries.

To sum: Nothing memorable about this place but it's fine for lunch once in a while.

I'm usually not a fan of 'chain-type' restaurants, but I was quite impressed with this Joey's location. I've been here 3 times, and the quality of food and service are quite consistent.

Food: had a variety of things from my visits (mini-burger appetizers, calamari, grilled ahi tuna burger, grilled chicken Mediterranean salad). All of it was quite enjoyable, hence the 4 ratings (based on the type of restaurant of course).

Service: besides the fact that every waitress is good looking, I found the service to be solid, especially for a relatively new restaurant - my first visit was a month after it opened.

Ambiance: very nice.

Value: same as the usual Joey's/Earl's/Cactus Club pricing.

Recommendation: worth a visit. Another reason I recommend this restaurant is that it is the test kitchen for the entire Joey's chain. They test out new dishes at this location prior to them being introduced at all the restaurants.

Decided to try this place out with a friend since I heard many good things about this place. It was a Monday night so we assumed the wait wouldn't be long since they don't take reservations. It was nice how the staff open and close the door for you. Hostess was very pleasant. Our waiter was nice but wasn't exactly prompt. For the type of food they serve, i think the price was a bit high. There wasn't much variety on their menu. My friend had the cranberry salmon and I had the lobster ravioli. It wasn't worth the $20/plate. I guess I would come back for appies and drinks in the lounge or something but would rather dine else where.

Yeah, I know. What was I expecting? A little more, I guess.

5 of us dined this evening. We were first told by the hostess that it would be quite a wait, but she couldn't tell us how long. We decided to wait a few minutes and see what happend. We were seated immediately. Strange.

Got a great booth. Very comfy. We ordered a few things to share. We had ahi tacos, lettuce wrap and dumplings. All were OK.

I ordered the lobster grilled cheese. This was grilled cheese period. Grilled cheese for $15. Silly me. It actually came 10 minutes after everyone else's food. I got no apology or explanation. I guess our server felt silly because she had already forgotten a few thinngs. I am pretty easy when it comes to sevice, but this kinda annoyed me.

I guess the formula works. Young sexy girls + average food + alcohol = profit. They did seem to have a well thought out wine system. I will give them some credit.

Save your tips girls.

It was impressive from the start, 2 pretty girls opening the giant doors for you as you make you way down the walkway towards the restaurant. The restaurant itself looked very expensively decorated. The lounge side looked much more exciting (there were more people there too) but we were here for dinner so we were seated in the restaurant side which was poshly decorated but boring. A glance at the menu and I can see why they can afford to hire 2 girls for the sole purpose of opening the doors. $10 for Gyozas?! ... $11 for wings?! ... absurd ... so I skipped those obscenely overpriced "appies" and grabbed a Chili Chicken, also $10 (which was the best dish of the evening, the only saving grace of the Food rating not being 1 star)
Our entrees were the Seafood linguine and club med. I almost gagged and choked on the pasta because it was overloaded with pepper and was too salty. I added a wedge of garlic bread for $3 (gah) so my overpowering pasta was $20. My partners club med didn't fare much better, saucy to the point of drenching the bread. Greasy and soggy with a very dry chunk of chicken inside, imagine chewing on a wet towel.
Service was prompt, nice guy that kept my beer flowing and water topped, but I go to a restaurant for FOOD. I wouldn't even pay half the price for the quality I got.
Dissappointing, lower end cardboard cutter chain restaurant indeed.
