Returned for MORE!

Returned for the AYCE dinner for $ 18.95

Again the food were very solid. Fried chicken wings came very hot and burnt my mouth. The food came quicker this time only 2-3 minutes after ordering.

Sashimi etc all were very solid.

The service was quicker also, probably due to different waitress.

Definitely will return again!!

AYCE and hotpot, too!

Went there awhile ago with my hubby for dinner on a Wednesday night. We went there based on the reviews on this website. The rolls and sashimi were good and fresh. We opted to go for the hot pot even though it was very limited in selection. The only downside to the hotpot was that the items were cooked in water instead of a soupbase or broth, but no matter.

For less than $20 per person for AYCE, it`s good value for fresh food and good selection! We haven`t tried lunch yet but will be back for that soon!

My new favourite AYCE sushi place.

I live in Mount Pleasant and I've passed by Jiro many times and never knew there was a sushi place on the 2nd floor. Don't let the outside fool you because there's a great restaurant upstairs.

I had the AYCE lunch for $11.95 which is a standard price and there are the standard menu items. But where Jiro stands out is that the rolls are huge! They're bigger than a la carte rolls at non-AYCE places and they're filled with fish instead of rice. Most AYCE give you small rolls packed with rice that were made a few hours ago. And that's another thing. All the sushi you order comes on one plate, instead of one roll per plate. This typically means the rolls weren't made and plated ahead of time. It's all fresh!

Most AYCE sushi survives on volume, but when I went there was a total of 6 people in the entire place. I don't know how they make money, but they've been around for a while so they must be doing something right. The service was good and the place looked clean. Overall, Jiro offers great value and great food.

Quiet, relaxed, everything Sushiyama is not

I live around the corner and go to Jiro quite a bit. The food in general is very good, although I can't speak for the sushi since I never eat sushi. All in all The food is never disappointing. It's kind of halfway between McKishu and a fancy restaurant.

The restaurant itself is pretty quiet and mellow (think QMFM and the occasional "dammit" in Japanese as one drops cutlery on the floor), perhaps because it's on the second floor and doesn't get the street traffic that a place like Kishu Island or Sushiyama does. For this reason it's a great spot to bring your ailing mother, your best friend of ten years, or your secret mistress (they have booths!) Myself, I bring my boyfriend or a newspaper.

It's a great little place to have deep discussions or watch the game on bigscreen TV. But I wouldn't bring a first date here (too intense!) and I wouldn't bring four of your rowdy frat buddies here either. For that, Sushiyama is just down the street. But if it's a Sunday, Sushiyama is closed and you head straight to Jiro.

Great all you can eat.

I love this place because the portions are really great, especially for all you can eat. After the first order, you COULD go for a second order, but usually I'm dead full by then. They have very nice workers. I'm pretty sure that the owners are Vietnamese, though, so you don't really get that authentic Japanese feel to it. I would definitely go again though. It's really worth your money, for lunch.

Jiro has never let me down...

I have been to Jiro hundreds of times -- my wife lived on sushi when both of our kids were buns in the oven.

Portions are large and made fresh when you order it. They don't ration your order or delay the making of it -- if you order a huge list, it all comes to your table in a rush.

The rolls are plump and juicy, loaded with meat. Their AYCE menu is well-rounded and offers something for everyone.

Take the time to talk to Tom the chef; his English is way better now that it was 6-7y ago and he likes to talk to the clients.

Ahn runs the show and she genuinely cares -- she'll remember names and the fact you haven't visited in a while; bu always with a smile.

I've had a LOT of AYCE sushi -- tried just about every place that hangs an AYCE banner in the window. Jiro has never made me queasy. I NEVER walk out of there... I usually have to be carried out on a stretcher... deep in a sushi-induced coma.

I love Jiro. I wish I could marry Jiro.

<3 Jiro.

Hmmm, surprising and disappointing...

I think we're starting to sound like AYCE sushi restaurant aficionados, ha!

So let's start with the good points regarding Jiro:
-The waitresses are very, very pleasant! Having been to various Chinese/Asian run restaurants, the attempts at Jiro to serve customers Western style was refreshing. The servers smiled, used a warm tone of voice, and kept cool when busy.
-The food was prepared when ordered and was not premade ( it made the wait time for the food longer compared to other AYCE sushi places ), either that or they prefer to be understaffed and overwork employees.

The bad was:
-The decor was too outdated/worn ie. carpets, bench seats, walls , lighting, and there are no windows for a view outside.
-The fish tank as you first walk-in was a telling sign, it needed cleaning/updating. The same could be said of the entire restaurant.
-The rice came out too warm in the sushi, and it lacked proper marinating.

There are better tasting AYCE sushi places out there, but the servers here made for a much warmer eating enviroment compared to all the other AYCE restaurants.

Solid AYCE Japanese Food
By Kaiz of Burnaby (6 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, April 25, 2009 - 6:41pm [Dine in]

I've gone here many times over the past few years and find this place to always be consistent and delicious.

Food: Although the selection is not as much as most other AYCE places, the things they do serve are always fresh and delicious. Their Motoyaki, Chicken Wings, Salmon Sashimi are always impeccable. Lunch time they also have a bit of dim sum which is also really good! (Find another AYCE Japanese restaurant that serves some of that!) A-La Carte menu items are large and good value as well.

Service Rating: The waitresses are always nice and friendly, as well as the owners. Always taken care of in a timely manner. Someone is always there to pour some tea if we run out.

Value: Definitely cheaper than most other AYCE joints, $11-12 for lunch, and $19 for dinner. Really good on the wallet if you need a rather quick cheap lunch.

Ambiance: Unfortunately, the place looks a tad neglected and the fish tank has seen much better days. Perhaps something to do with the lack of patrons this restaurant receives? It is located on the second floor of the building, and I wonder if many people know this place exists, as there is not really advertising for it.

Note: When parking at the back be careful, at night my Car got broken into. (and a few others as well) Just be aware that this is not the best neighbourhood. You probably want to park at the mall across the street, or on a sidestreet somewhere else.

the sashimi is very fresh
the ratio of fish to rice is perfect, not too much rice like other places. the nori is ok.
their udon is quite large and tasty. the best that i have had at ayce.
their deep fried dishes are light and crispy, very good yam tempura.
the tea that they serve is much better than most other places.
their teriyaki dishes are awesome, it comes sizzling on a hot pan, with some veggies, real nice!
i really enjoyed everthing that i ordered. other places are hit and miss with certain items, some good some bad.
for ayce lunch enthusiasts this place is a must try!!!
i like it better than tomokazu, fish on rice, i love sushi.

Jiro

I've been going to Jiro for a few years now and everytime it doesn't fail to dissapoint. You can order from the regular menu or you can do all you can eat. Lunch all you can eat is $11.95 while dinner is $18.95. For dinner their is a much wider selection, no limit to sashimi, and you can order either seafood of beef hotpot to cook at your table.

The quality of food is always consistently good. The sushi always tastes fresh and is always nicely prepared. My favourite dishes here are the oyster motoyaki and the salmon terikyaki. I especially like the cuts they use for the salmon teriyaki as it is the belly part of the salmon.

The restaurant itself is o.k, with booths and rooms. Typical setup for a Japanese restaurant. They have one big screen T.V which is usally on sports. Service is solid and friendly and parking is easy to find all around the area.

It's on the second floor across kingsgate mall on east broadway, a definate must try!

One of my favourite places for all you can eat!

After reading many reviews on this site pertaining to all you can eat places in Vancouver, I noticed that no one remarked on Jiro. Perhaps it may be because Jiro is kind of tucked away, in an unnoticable location of the upper level of building in a sort of shady neighbourhood around Kingsgate Mall... and despite its location, it is definately a place to visit.

There's free parking available either on Broadway or in the underground parking of the restaurant.

Jiro doesn't have an extensive menu as other all you can eat places but it's decent enough and patrons do find all the classic menu items available.

What makes Jiro one of my favourites is that it's consistently good. I visit here maybe twice a month and each time, I leave happy, full and satisfied. The food is pretty fresh and comes out in a timely manner. The layout of the restaurant has spacious tables for smaller groups in the middle of the restaurant and private rooms for larger parties along the exterior of the restaurant.

Sashimi is fresh and a generous size.
The oyster motoyaki is to die for as is the ika karaage. The chicken and beef teriyaki actually comes on the grilled stone plates that are often associated with a-la-carte orders rather than the typical plastic plates. The cones (they only offer: Spicy Tuna, Negitoro, and Chopped Scallop) are pretty good too; just enough rice and filling. Gyozas and Tempura is yummy too. They also offer a few dimsum items (har gou and sui mai). Their udon is a generous portion rather than the miso soup bowl serving other places offer. They also offer Shabu Shabu with the dinner menu.

If you want more menu items to choose from, then perhaps Jiro isn't for you. But you want to fix that Japanese food craving, especially from a place that seems to put care and attention to the food they serve, then Jiro is definately a place to try.
This is a place that I'm a regular at and will continue to be.
I strongly recommend this place.

Consistency is key

When eating sushi, I have 2 tests - Regular and All you can eat. Jiro falls in the all you can eat category and has proven to be a consistent performer. This is NOT a restaurant that serves up beautifully plated items but it does do a good job of serving fresh, tasty food at a very reasonable price.

The lunch is what I usually go for and they do have limit on the sashimi ordered but the rest is unlimited. They have very good handrolls, though the rice could be cooler when served, they use nice nori. Their sushi is a nice balance of rice versus filling although not as fine as truly Japanese chefs would roll. The fried foods are always hot and tasty such as the chicken karaage (just wings) and ika karrage (squid rings).

The service is from nice ladies who work hard, are friendly and overall nice. The only real shortcoming is that the restaurant is located on the top floor of the building, thus less people actually see it is there. It is a solid performer that people should really try for solid food value.
