Excellent Korean food

I find that for all Korean restaurants, it's best to come with a few people so you can try a variety of dishes because of the big portions. Jang Mo Jib is no exception. I came here with 4 others and we ordered the spicy pork bone soup, the seafood pancake, the triple A short ribs, and some pan fried dumplings. The pan fried dumplings were okay, nothing special. The triple A short ribs were tender but for $25 for 2 ribs, I didn't think it was worth it. The seafood pancake and the spicy pork bone soup were excellent though. I especially love the seafood pancake with a good amount of seafood and crispy top.

For $22 a person with all the food mentioned above (with leftovers) and 2 beers, I thought the price wasn't bad. The service was okay, it was hard to flag down a server most of the time but I experience that in all korean restaurants. The restaurant itself is kinda old with uncomfortable seats (I sat against the wall on a wooden bench) and it was quite stuffy inside. But for the food, I am willing to overlook that :)

I definitely recommend this restaurant if you are craving some korean food.

Disappointing

There is a large young Korean population in the West End and this restaurant obviously caters to them with loud music. Service was sporadic...seat yourself and wait for the lukewarm tea to arrive. The menu was varied with the usual Korean fare...I tried the small miniature crab and for S16.95 it was a let-down, they give you large kitchen scissors to cut the shell but you could break the shell with your fingers and there was little crab to be found. The BBQ dishes ($12.95) were a better choice but I expected an overall better experience.

Korean Cafeteria Food

I have been to this place a few times and will prob be going back again at some point. So dont let the low marks dissuade you from checking this place out. There is nothing special about the food, service or enviroment. But you get what you get here, The service here has never been good whenever I've visited. But I have never been publically insulted or abused yet. But I cant even buy a smile here and I have tried. :-) . But it is open later at nite and the prices are resaonable.
They serve the customery side dishes, bean sprout, potatoes, kimchi, radish. They give you a container of Hot tea or cold water. The Galbi i had most recently here were pretty tough. and the galbi noodle in soup was tastless and bland. the mackerel is nothing special here. but there are many other items on here that i have had in the past that were good. so i suppose it is hit and miss on the food. There are better choices around. Prob be back here again for late nite snack when everything else is closed.

Scary at night

Went there for the first time back in November with a few friends to grab a late night bite. Kinda scary, even for me. Some sketchy-looking characters hanging out there, as well as some VERY drunk people. We got a very interesting view when this drunk girl fell on her butt right in front of our table. lol.

Anyway, the food was good, but I've had better for cheaper at other Korean places on Robson. Had short ribs, bibimbap in hot stone bowl, seafood pancake and a couple other things I can't remember. The free starters were only so-so.

Service was good. Never felt rushed. Quick to bring anything we needed.

Well the ambiance I mentioned earlier. Going during dinner hours might be better. Floors seemed kinda dirty. Not too roomy either.

Don't think I'll return unless all the other late-night places are closed.

Good Soup

We went to Orchid Delight for a late lunch on BC Day to find them closed. Next we tried Zakkushi. Closed. Guu. Closed. Almost giving up, we noticed a Korean restaurant across the street and pop in to have a look. We were pleasantly surprised to find a packed restaurant. So in we go.

One look at the menu and we realised this is the same chain we visited in Richmond months ago.

We ordered a Korean pancake (looks more like a pan pizza), a tofu soup with seafood, noodle in chicken soup and a BBQ beef short ribs.

The food were generally good, except for the short ribs. We were expecting BBQ, but got stir fry instead. The food is better than their store in Richmond, but the Kimchi in Richmond has more "kick".

Service was almost non-existent. There were only saw 2 service staff. I had to grab the chopsticks myself, and the water/tea jug was hardly refilled. Yes, you get a jug of ice water/tea, but once empty, good luck in getting it refilled.

Ambiance? What ambiance? The place is pretty run down.

Return? Unlikely, unless I am craving for Korean. There are just so many better alternatives in the area.

I went to this restaurant with some friends last night, and I thought that even though the dishes seemed expensive, it made sense because the portions were quite large, huge actually. We ordered several things: short ribs, which were tender, though they lacked flavor, the jap che noodles, which i thought were delicious, and was a huge dish, the bbq pork, which was great too, very tender and sweet, and the seafood pancake, which again i thought was nice, tender, it definitely needed the sauce that came with it though. All in all, I thought the place was great, it seemed clean enough. The bathrooms were locked, which was a little strange, and the service was efficient, if not overly warm.

Addictive Hot Pot

I go there for their Hot Pot. End of story. Their other food is ok but to make the most out of your experience, go for their hot pot. Some of their food is slightly overpriced, I mean, $10 for a small bowl of cold chewy noodles with some veggies? Service wasn't incredible but pretty decent. Tea and water came in these rectangular jugs, which was different for me. I can't get enough of their little appys though. If you're ever in downtown, this is a place that you should try out.

I don't care so much about the service and the ambiance at this place. It is the food which keeps me coming back for more. This is the only place I'll come for korean.......... We live in the west end,and we have sampled several other korean restaurants, but this is the only one which we keep coming back to.

This place is always crowded for good reasons.

This had been a staple of traditional Korean cuisine for myself and friends for many years. Its very disappointing to see such a well establish name going down the slippery slope of a has-been restaurant. The service level is less than stellar on our last several visits. Their business model is based on maximizing on filled seats, rather than customer service. Many a times, we were asked to wait for 10-15 minutes, because they didn't want to seat 2 on a 4 person table. There are many other good Korean restaurants along the Robson strip, who serve similar and better entrees with emphasis on service.

YOU SHOULD TRY IT. GO THERE
The servers are attentive, and sometimes gives you some friendly comments. They even allow my puppy in, they're really nice, even though i couldn't let him sit on the chair, he had to lay on the ground.
I definitely go here and eat.

hah what a difference compared to the Richmond location!
This place looks quite run down -- the walls are wood panels but that totally doesn't make me change my mind about the food! The food is definitely authentic and it's what all Korean food should be like. My friend and I shared a tofu jjigae and bibimbap. Well done. I loved the sauce that came with the bibimbap -- it's like gochujang sauce mixed with satay sauce. Service was pretty ok. Nothing to complain or rave about.

I like this place simply because the food is great!
However, the service was bad, maybe because it was so crowded. The staffs retorted at me to wait when I asked for the bill. Still, I liked the food and the price.

I'm a big fan of Jang Mo Jib mainly because of the food. Korean's my favourite cuisine and these guys nailed it. I have a strange suspicion the other review wasn't from an actual guest. Sounds really fishy to me and just not possible there. The servers I've had there have been super nice. It can be a bit slow if they're busy, and the vibe could be hipper but the food is awesome and the employess are great.

There is someone for everyone's taste bud in this restaurant.
Kids eat the pan-fried dumplings and seafood pancake. Hubby and I have the spicy tofu soup and chap-chae noodles. The noodles aren't as good as my momma makes, but hey, it's still pretty good!
Prices and portions are reasonable, and the service is great.

The food was really good, couldn't complain one bit. I loaded up on the kimchee! Service was okay and the ambience was nothing spectacular. However when the food came it was all delicious!! The price we paid for two was quite reasonable. We could've had one less dish. I didn't know it was unlimited for the side dishes.

Best Korean by far

I've been to quite a few korena restraunts in vancouver and i would say jangmojib is by far the best I have had in vancouver. I went with a few korena freinds and they knew exactly what to order and everything was delicious. We had the korean seafood pancake, jap chae, steamed dumplings and a pork bone soup that came with rice, and a lot of side dishes. The soup wasn't too spicy but perfectly flavourful and the pork meat literally fell off the bone and was soft but not dry.
I would defintitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for an authentic style korean dinner, one bad thing is that looking for parking in DOwntown vancouver might take awhile.

Disappointment

Submitted Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 1:24am [Dine in]

My second visit to Jang Mo Jib ended with disappointment. Food was solid as my first visit, however, the service was HORRIBLE!!!

The older gentlemen behind the cashier seemed more focused about counting money then looking after customers inside (and there were no more than 5 tables/ 15 people at any given time at lunch service today). Waited few minutes before we were seated with a mostly empty restaurant, then longer before our order were taken (2 other staff on the floor as well). Kudos to the kitchen on a speedy service of getting the food out. More confusions when we asked for the cheque while we ask to wrap up the left-overs. Only one of the 3 dishes were packed and the staffs reply "really?" when I asked them to pack the other 2 dishes again (our spicy pork bone soup was 2/3 full still).

Anyway, there are a lots of other Korean restaurants available and I will not likely come back nor recommend this place to anyone.

Good Authentic Korean Food

Food is great, however can get a little on the pricey side as things add up and some of the best dishes are close to $20.00. Try the Hamel Pajun, it is one of the best in Vancouver.

Interior decor is like a traditional beer house you would find in a university district in Seoul, so if you have never been to Korea give it a go. Ambience and food are very close to the real thing. I gave a 5 on ambience not because you would take your work client, romamtic date or even maybe a special family dinner there, but because it is very similiar to many student places in Korea.

Good Korean food is overshadowed by an incredibly disinteresed staff, booming music which is clearly meant to get you out as quickly as possible, and an ambience that is one step removed from your grandmother's outdated kitchen. It has its moments but it has so much more potential.
