Cantonese style Chinese Restaurant serving Dim Sum and Dinners.
Crab done your way for $9.80 a pound. Excellent dish. Every time we had crab shells on our side plates they were replaced with clean ones. This happened 5 times. I don't know how the service was in the back of the room but it sure was fine where I was. Also had a prawn ball with broccoli dish. Another winner. Going to come back and try the lobster $18-$19 a lb. Just waiting for a special occasion.
Stopped by here for Dim Sum as we were in the neighborhood to stop by the fishing store. International has always been the place to get a better than average dim sum. They still have the best scallop and hargow dumplings which sets them apart from many other places. All other dim sum items we enjoyed were of good food quality. Still have not found a place to say "this is the one and only" in Dim Sum Land yet. There are some close ones. It's a place like this where they assemble a bit different dumpling, that makes them worth mentioning. This is a clean and suitable venue for larger groups as well. Like most Chinese restaurants, decor seems secondary and the place could always use Restaurant Makeover.
My dad took our family out to dim sum a few weeks ago at this place. Hadn't been here in about a year or so. We had a reservation and because my father knew the owner, they were able to reserve a table for us on a busy Saturday and they didn't charge us for tea either.
The food was okay, nothing special. My main complaint was this one pushy dim cart lady. We had ordered a plate of deep fried taro, which she gave to us and then started putting on other items which we didn't ask for, namely deep fried wontons. I told her that we didn't want it and she gave me this puzzled look and replied in cantonese that it was really good, try it. I told replied back to her in cantonese that I've tried deep fried wonton before and didn't want it. She already put sauce on it and was reluctant to take it away. My dad finally just told me to forget about it.
I realize these ladies jobs require them to "sell" these items, but they need to learn that "no means no" and if I wanted cold, deep fried wonton "skins" with it miniscule piece of meat in it - I would have asked for it.
That really put a damper on this dim sum experience and it seems like the restaurants in Vancouver doing push cart style dim sum service do this, which I can't stand. Although push cart is what I grew up with, sometimes it's better to just go to the places that have order sheets, so that you get exactly what you ordered, hot and fresh and don't have to deal with the b.s. of pushy service or carts not coming to your table or running out of items.
We tried the dim sum for the first time, only had to wait a few minutes. $3.25 for small $3.75 for large plates of dim sum. 10 percent off if you go early. We had the shrimp & pork dumplings, they weren't outstanding.. 4 pork/rice balls came in a plate, usually you get 3, maybe they were smaller... enjoyed the shrimp rice roll the best, sauce was tasty.. pricier than the other restaurants we frequent...
even though we are not asian they treat us like family here..thats because we go so often.. excellent dim sum ..fresh and hot. however some times it would be nice to have something new on the menu..havent been to any dim sum place better than this one. if u have let me know..
On a wet rainy Saturday, it was a good place to go for some dim sum. Went there with my dining partner, Hargow.
Dim sum was quite good. Had better than average hargow and excellent hargow with a scallop on top. Stuffed full of tender and delicious shrimp. Probably the best hargow I have ever had.
Also had foong zhou, seen jook geen (one of the better ones I have had), turnip cake (very good), tripe, ham siu gok and spare ribs (lots of meat and not fatty). Everything was good and I would definitely come here again.
So next time this Dawn Tart will have to try out her namesake.
My parents are regulars here and even when I come without them, I still get treated well. The food's pretty consistent, not amazing, but solid and good value. It's always a good fall-back when I'm not in the mood to experiment with other places. Dim sum is good and priced well. Service is friendly (although can be slow during peak times). The king crab is done nicely, especially the fried rice - has lots of big chunks of crab in it. They always offer a discount too.
Just went here with my folks and the waiter informed this restaurant has been sold and will be changing ownership within a week.
Pretty disappointing if you just ask me. I just found out about this restaurant from reading the Vancouver Sun, where a reader recommended this place.
The food, I must say is pretty good, better than most Chinese restaurants that I tried. Pink Pearl and Floata to name a few.
The dim sum was hot and fresh. The hargrow was nice and big. My favorite was the egg tart. It ranks top 10 in my books.
I'll be frequenting this restaurant this week to try out more of the menu
I went there with my friends again and it was a great experience once again! If you frequent there a lot, like I do, you'll get treated with respect like a boss or a celebrity.
Oh just to clarify from the previous reviewer, the smalls are $2.25 (and that includes 3 egg tarts), mediums are $3.25 and larges are $3.75. But I think these prices are justified as the quality of the ingredients are fresh and bigger.
For example, I went to Floata for dinner and I noticed that the shrimps that they used were tiny little baby shrimps. This was nothing compared to the shrimps in the hagao and the shrimp rice roll.
Anyways, it's better to go with more people as you get to sample more dishes that way. I had 7 people with me and the total came to about $76 with tip.
We had so much food that we couldn't finish it all and had to doggy pack it.
